  • I take my friend and BBC 5 live colleague for his first flight in a microlight. It turns out to me more eventful that either of us expected when we have a near miss with another aircraft just after leaving Sleap airfield, and then we see the Red Arrows on our way back to Barton.

    Another amazing video Rory. Love the openness in how you deal with issues so we can all learn from it. It’s been a real blessing to me as I’ve just completed my first solo in the euro star. Your videos are a real encouragement on my lessons.
    Everyone at Otherton said to say hi.
    Ps. The new camera angles are really good and more continuity. Thanks Rory.

    Hi Rory, cracking video as always, living the dream - glad you're safe! I hope that your passenger wasn't put off going up again.
    Always hard to out climb other aircraft in climb out situation (worse even with birds, they're hard to out climb anyway, should out manoeuvre and dive away from them if possible, and for me, once, a large scale model aircraft at my altitude!).
    I remember on finals to a local grass strip, the local military base was in contact with us via RT and we were given a squawk code etc etc. Cloud was closing in, but we were landing, then unannounced, a flipping Herc appears out of the murk in front of us, about 100' clearance. The pillock! We were asked if we wanted to report a NM, but declined. A few years earlier, dad had taken a newbie up, all was good, same situation and ATC was all via local military - none transponder equipped - and a bunch of guys in red overalls went either side of him scared his passenger! Dangerous for multitude of reasons, inc jet wash. Again they were unannounced! ATC enquired if father wanted to report a NM? He declined. But it goes to show that it isn't always the amateurs that get it wrong, the military do too!
    A couple of quick questions; Does the EV97 suffer a more bumpy ride than the C42s, due to being a low wing and all aluminum construction? Also I was always told to not taxi, land or T/O over the numbers, have you ever been told that too (I realise its always best to have more RW in front of you then behind)? The reason why I ask is that your airmanship always looks and sounds to be superb.
    Thanks again Rory cracking open, honest video.

    Hello Rory. I was the pilot of DX routing Gloucestershire to Sleap on that date. I did a standard overhead join on the correct runway and crossed the reciprocal numbers overhead at 1000 QFE as described and I saw you depart whilst executing the join. What I was not expecting after departure was a turn back into the downwind on a departure, which is not a manoeuvre I have personally executed, always exiting the ATZ before continuing en-route. I am aware of the 'on the right, in the right' rule and was watching to see where you were heading after departure. As I realised you were in (or nearer than, due to noise abatement) the downwind leg I was heading for to join, I turned to the right to deconflict and join the downwind behind you. At virtually the same time you took your anti-collision avoidance turn and descent. As one of the comments stated, I think a call on joining the downwind after departure would have helped me understand your intentions and therefore given me more situational awareness and time to adjust my join to come in behind you. As you were unsure of whether I had seen you I agree your decision making was spot on in taking avoiding action just to be sure you were safe and I thanked you over the RT for that decision. From my viewpoint I should have perhaps taking earlier action to adjust course to come into the downwind behind you but I suspect the uncertainly of your intentions and my unfamiliarity with the action of an aircraft making a downwind join after take off for departure without that intention being called on the RT made me hesitate until I was sure of your course. We all learn from our accumulated experience and I agree that this was a learning experience in terms of joining downwind from both the overhead and after departure. As to right and wrong, 'there but for the grace of god go I'.

      David Rickwood Hello David, thank you for watching and commenting - it’s really helpful to hear what it was like from your point of view. I have been taught that when you depart uncontrolled airfields you fly a circuit pattern and depart at the end of whichever leg is most appropriate to your onward course. In this case I was taking off South with the intention to fly North so I flew a left hand crosswind leg (all be it a short banking one due to noise abatement concerns) and then moved onto a downwind leg. I believe this is pretty standard practice (? others may have a view?) so I’m interested to hear that you fly the runway heading until you are outside the ATZ. That must be quite inconvenient when it’s in the wrong direction!? Anyway, you saw me around the same time I saw you which reassures me that we were very unlikely to have a collision as we were both making avoidance manoeuvres. I accept a position report may have been helpful, especially as I was flying a tight circuit and I’ll keep this in mind for next time. You confirming you had me visual ahead at low level was helpful after I lost sight of you in the avoidance turn so thank you again for that. As you say, we all learn from things like this and I appreciate you taking part in this video by responding here. I’ll buy you a tea if we meet at another airfield sometime! All the best, Rory.

      @ David You say you were not expecting a departing aircraft to go downwind? I find that a bit wierd. Up to half the traffic at most small UK airfields do a circuit after take off (for practise or training) so are highly likely to go downwind.

    Hi Rory, difficult at first from the video to see how the near miss occurred (and maybe a diagram may have helped to explain it to your viewers), but from your comments I understand that the other aircraft was crossing over the active centre line from deadside to live side when you wanted to fly perpendicular to him on the extended centreline. The same has happened to me at Popham where they have a lower 800’ circuit.
    In a Microlight we have to be especially careful of that happening as we can climb so fast (compared to GA) and can easily reach circuit height before the end of the runway is reached. I was taught to not climb too quickly, especially if there is other traffic in the circuit- take a long slower climb so you are well outside of the circuit pattern before reaching circuit height.
    Hope this helps, and well done for the avoiding action

    • @RoryOnAir
      @RoryOnAir  5 років тому

      Geoffrey Coan Hi Geoffrey, thanks for the comment. You’re right about the other aircrafts position and I should have included a diagram, I’m annoyed at myself for not doing so now. In this case my tighter than usual turn from take off to crosswind and then almost immediately onto downwind was driven by the need to
      Avoid noise abatement areas white trying to avoid flying unnecessarily far south when my route home with a potentially Air sick pax was North. I think both myself and the other pilot were doing our own manoeuvres correctly but I believe he should have given way to me and manoeuvred behind me, which given my right circuit wouldn’t have been much of a detour - but that’s just my opinion.

    Great film, many thanks. It is perhaps difficult to see very clearly due to the nature of the wide angle lens, but for my money in the time you had available, you made a correct instinctive turn away and descending away from the conflict. These things happen very fast and you sometimes must act by reflex and instinct. As I say though, not completely seen as you no doubt viewed it, due to the camera position and lens, but the most important factors are, 1. Everybody lived to tell the tale.
    2. You had enough altitude to make a descending turn away from the traffic without compromising safety any further.
    3. Your excellent spotter was more than vital in the time frame available in getting the avoiding action underway. Never underestimate the power and importance of having your passengers keep a look out and always brief them to call a spot and keep them engaged in the flying. He was excellent in picking up other traffic too and that is a huge help at busy times.
    Safe flying and look forward to more adventures!

    I’d have been tempted to extend the climb out, as I was taught not to start a turn if reported traffic was not sighted.... but then you can only extend so far before you leave the ATZ. Tough call!

    I think you did the right thing avoiding the other plane. Kudos to your friend in Spotting the traffic. I had a close call a long time ago. My instructor and I were off to practice some cross wind landings but he wasn't keen on using the radios. I listened as Approach was talking to an aircraft come in our direction decending as we were climbing and at the last minute we saw each other and we both cranked to the left. Regs say to turn to the right but had we done that it would have been messy. I was close enough to see his mustache. I'm pilot in command so I did what was necessary to avoid a mid-air. My instructor said "your supposed to turn right." Fly safe.

    Interesting flight! I have experienced 2 near misses, the first was when I was about 10 and flying back from St Brieuc in Brittany to Jersey. We came out of cloud and out of the left side of the DC3 I saw another one, the same altitude and the same airline, banking hard right to pass behind us. Not sure how close but near enough to see the airline livery on it.
    The second was in the late 90s in a Cessna out of Poppham airfield we passed over something that looked like a Jodel or Robin near Basingstoke. I don’t think it was more than 100ft below us, we could clearly see the 2 people in the cockpit. That was far too close!

    Hi Rory, Great video as always. Just trying to get my head around how this occurred, as from the film it appears as if DX was coming directly at you! (And flies passed you after your evasive right turn) If DX was deadside descending when you took off then I can see how they might conflict in a perpendicular manner as you come onto down wind (as you've said you would hope they would manoeuvre behind you) but don't understand how they would come to be flying towards you? Only think I can think of is that they were entering a circuit for a different runway?

    • @RoryOnAir
      @RoryOnAir  5 років тому

      Hello mate, they weren’t coming towards me as we saw them first, but instead from left to right in front and about 100 above. I would have got pretty close had we continued towards them hence my right descending turn. That meant they ended up above and behind us. I’ll draw a pic for you when I see you next if you like. I should have added one to the video but ran out of production time.

    Overhead join at Sleap is at 2000 feet AGL and not 1000 feet which is actually the circuit height. This is quite normal with the overhead join 1000 feet above the circuit height. For example, EGBN has an 1800 feet overhead join descending to join the circuit at 800 feet on the QFE. Far too many pilots think they should join overhead at the actual circuit height, a height that can easily be achieved by some departing aircraft.

    Awesome video, mate! Seeing the other A/C escaping to his right as well, it looks like you did the right thing? You don't want to turn into an incoming A/C and climb out, risking a stall if you're doing it all to agressive, which is obviously in the range of all things possible? I mean, watching your airspeed closely in a climb, in a split second, when your eyes are definitely outside the cockpit, isn't the best way to go? In Europe the wrong choices were made - like eveytime where people decide something without listening to experts or doing some research what other countries are doing. So everything will be even more expensive now. I personally do not really care much because I can easily afford their stupidity but not everyone can. Did you fly an oval circuit instead of a square on the Sleap departure? Certainly looked like a nearly continuous turn and a really close in downwind leg.
    If I was finishing the OH join crossing to the downwind of a square circuit I’d be expecting you to have been much further to my right (expecting you to have climbed on runway track, then turned and flown a crosswind leg parallel to my joining track) and I’d have been looking for you somewhere off to my right around the start of the downwind. I certainly wouldn’t be expecting you to be close in almost dead ahead as you’d flown a climbing 180 instead.
    Nice job with the avoiding action though and no harm done. Good decision to stay low too and a nice, civilized radio call.
    Be interesting to hear the other pilots perspective. I’d guess that he never saw you.

    Your position at the start of your downwind leg was less than 1/2 mile east from runway 18 centreline at 900ft. The circuit is further out to the east approx 1 mile at 1000ft. The other aircraft should be crossing 36 threshold 1000ft west to east he would be looking for you further to the east. Your aircraft performance allowed you to reach circuit height, almost! and downwind direction, if not correct ground track simultaneously, therefore a high workload. As said before, extending the take off climb on runway direction before turning would make the departure safer. You did lookout and listen out but were below circuit height, close to the runway and approaching joining traffic from below.

    Personally I think I would have handled it exactly the way you did. From what I could see turning left and climbing wouldn’t work as you don’t have enough power to climb fast enough to clear. Also you would most likely turn directly into their path and not cleared it. Also if the other aircraft still had not seen you they wouldn’t have had a reason to turn and would have continued straight into your path. A descending turn to the right on full power in this case took you away faster and also exposed more surface area for the other aircraft to see and avoid. Pulling back on the controls on full power to avoid an aircraft can easily cause enough distraction to loose too much speed and cause a power on (departure) stall and possible spin.

Or did you clash as you turned onto downwind? Circuit traffic is never an easy one - I struggle with it all, several years after getting my license. The Flying Reporter Thanks Jon. I had just turned onto downwind and saw the shadow of his aircraft which I think was at the ‘cross the upwind numbers at 1000’ stage of the overhead join. I had heard him call overhead and ‘deadside descending’ so I was aware he was there and looking but as someone else has suggested I should perhaps have made a position report. Whether or not it was an airprox is an interesting question. As I said I showed the video and discussed it with an instructor to see what they thought and we decided it wasn’t worth it as we don’t think we would have collided even if I had done nothing. Maybe I’m wrong with this though. All good learning experience!
