  • In this special edition of Rory On Air, I go behind the scenes with Scotland's Charity Air Ambulance. I meet the crew based at Aberdeen airport and find out about the roles carried out by the pilot and paramedics, the kit they carry which could save your life, and with cameras mounted onboard the helicopter, we get to travel with them on HEMS and Air Ambulance missions across Scotland.
    Please consider making a donation to this fantastic charity, which does amazing work for the people of Scotland.

    We’re really very lucky to have both the SCAA EC135, the Yellow H145s and King Airs as part of the Scottish Ambulance Service north of the border.

      We've been blessed with being able to raise funds for our local air-ambulance team - such a worthwhile service.
      Sadly, several times a year now, a helo (air-ambulance) comes in low over our house roof up the Cul de Sac, to land inbetween, older houses (1950/60s) on the patch of grass because of the rise in knife crime injuries. I've seen them do a go around in iffy wx - I've flown in, had a go in a Scout, I also fly helos on flight sims (landing in tight spots for fun) I can only imagine the challenges of landing a helo between houses, telegraph poles, on a small patch of grass. My neighbours thought the world was ending when it first happened - I twigged what he was up to and where he'd land. Good work, essential work💜✌️💜

    Before I retired, a few years ago, I was the only full-time all year around professional gliding instructor in Scotland, for about 20 years. I sent many pilots solo and suggested to them that they should contribute to SCAA; most of them signed-up for standing orders. For those who were a little reluctant, I suggested that it was cheaper than life insurance.

      Yeah it was interesting trying to self shoot that when I haven’t used the kit for ages, and when the team were ‘live’ on the job as it were. Good fun though! Yeah they have reduced minima for HEMS jobs but if they go IFR it’s the same for them as you or I. Thanks for watching!

    Great video! It’s good that people get to see the other side of the air ambulance paramedic role as observer and crew. Having flown many air missions with the UK and Australian ambulance services, I can say it’s a great job but thank god for larger aircraft and tool such as the Lucas device. If you ever get to Western Australia, a combined fire and ambulance service aircraft also has off shore search and rescue capability. The crews are winch trained and often take patients off of ships. I’m sure Clinton, James or one of the team would love to show you around.

    I'm really enjoying your videos and can't wait to see what you cover next. Currently I'm doing my IFR training on a 135 in Norway. I was looking at some of your older videos and saw that you featured another 135 from the Northern Lighthouse Board that looked very familiar to the one I'm currently doing my training on. Check out REGA in Switzerland. Apparently they use similar aircraft but they also have the radar nose fitted and I guess it's not just for show. They tried to develop a small helicopter with a heated rotor so they could operate even in snowfall (because they say there are some hundreds of cases where they can't help within 15 minutes as this is their goal, to reach every point within Switzerland within 15 minutes), unfortunately first the project was hampered by the pandemic and afterwards by technical problems.

    • @RoryOnAir
      @RoryOnAir  8 місяців тому

      Yes, some HEMS aircraft in the UK have weather radars fitted in a nose bubble but the SCAA aircraft don't. Heated rotor systems are complex and add extra weight too. It's all a trade off in aviation.

    I was loading patients into a Hong Kong built ex military jet turbines helo with side winch- (2000-2001) off roadways and bushland
    Then ended up living next door to the helicopter base. It was funded by a bank, state Ambulance service and community financial support.

    • @RoryOnAir

      I don’t know but I suspect it’s a number of factors. The 145 is bigger with a longer range which is a plus, but it also creates more downwash which can be an issue. I suspect cost is a factor for a charity too.
