I just bought a coconut for the first time today and after trying to crack it open with a knife, ended up asking my husband to crack it on the patio. It worked, but I wish I had watched this video first haha.

When you open your coconut - listen very carefully when the puncture occurs. If you hear a hiss, that may indicate that carbon dioxide is escaping. Carbon dioxide occurs during fermentation - the sugars from the coconut water have turned into alcohol. This can be a sign that the coconut has gone rotten and should be discarded. Do not try to drink fermented coconut water.

Umm if it’s fermented then the water is healthier. Those are the lucky coconuts. Tastes great. Like a coconut soda!

@@CuriousCat777 @Gary Nolan Sorry to burst your bubble. It depends on the type of bacteria or yeast fermenting the coconut water. Sure, you can get your common baker's yeast (produces CO2), which won't harm you, but you can get nasty things such as Salmonella, E. Coli (certain strains are not good and should not be ingested), Listeria, etc. These are all facultative anaerobes (can switch to fermentation if not given oxygen such as on the inside of a coconut), and produce CO2 (only if the bacteria in hand use the ethanol pathway) (the bubbles) and also exotoxins such as Shiga toxin (O157 E. Coli), and each bacteria's respective toxins. In addition to these bacteria, in that oxygen-free environment, there are obligate anaerobic bacteria such as Clostridium botulinum (doesn't produce CO2 but can coexist with the above bacteria), the one and only cause of botulism (think paralyzed breathing, total muscle failure, heart failure, brain death). C. botulinum lives in (you guessed it) poorly packaged canned food, and pertaining to our current discussion, bad coconuts.
While it does taste great and you may have had no problem so far with those coconuts, there is a substantial risk that it's actually not yeast that you're dealing with (you can't just whip out a microscope and see what organism it is, that's impractical and you would need a lot of other steps such as staining to see the microbes). It could be terrible bacteria that you ingest, such as the ones above, and you may either feel fine, to slight discomfort, to diarrhea, to a trip to the hospital.
If you don't trust all that relatively preliminary science and stay in the anti-vax/healing crystal/essential oil mindset, you can take it from me: I experienced an "unlucky" coconut in a trip to Hainan. It was 2 days before I experienced any symptoms: then on the plane ride back I couldn't even lift my head because I lost so much water from diarrhea.
Listen to Robert Rice. The laws of nature will it so.

Oh and as someone that grew up in the islands of the a Caribbean. Young Coconuts are PRIZED for their Juice which is much sweeter as well the young Coconut Jelly which we love to eat as is scooping it out the young shell. As we say back in my home island Coconut Jelly! Older Coconuts juice not as sweet just more Fleshy and for making Coconut Milk. But the funniest thing of all is that growing up as a kid back home in the Caribbean most people picked and used Younger a Coconuts than the much older ones. I think they just exported the older Coconuts off the islands to places that had no Coconuts which is funny.

You gave great instructions and I can't wait to open my coconut. I bought a young coconut because they look less intimidating in the store, but next time I will try a mature one. Thank you! I'm excited to try all the components of a fresh coconut. I've only tried processed versions of coconut, like coconut milk in a can, coconut water, or dried coconut. I've never liked the taste of store bought coconut water, so I hope fresh tastes much better. I plan to drink the water, and use the meat in a smoothie.

Your coconut will empty faster if you put a bendable straw in the same hole. Hold the nut in one hand ready to be poured and the bent straw in the other while keeping a finger on the tip of the bent part so nothing comes in or out. Insert the long part of the straw in the hole of the nut and flip it over the glass. Let a few drops come out of the nut until the tip inside is over the water line. Release the hole of the bent part. Enjoy the juice rushing out while the air is sucked in the straw.

  • @DanSitar0

The fastest method to get the water out is to crack the nut your way right over the cup. Once the water starts dripping, pry the crack slowly with the back of the same knife to separate the nut. All the water will pour out in a second.

Awww, who needs fingers? ;-) I'm afraid even Julia Child's method of baking the whole coconut for 20 minutes at 400 degrees (after draining the water) still put the fingers at risk. It was a bit easier to get the meat out, but not necessarily worth heating the coconut meat up to 140 degrees F.

Does the young coconut have the same amount of saturated fat and carbs as the mature one?

    • @healthnutnation

No, it does not. I'm not sure of the exact difference, but I do know that the mature one contains more sugar, which equates to more carbs.

Tip: the less water, the more meat is in the coconut and vice versa. The reason this is, is because the coconut water/endosperm gets converted into the creamy tissue/"meat".edit: So, basically, we exchange water into denser and thicker meat.

The three dark spots on the mature coconut are fairly weak. In fact, you can usually push one of them out with your finger after you have removed the coconut meat even if you haven't previously touched it.

That's a pretty nifty gadget if you want to shred coconut. I've got to say that getting the thing out, attaching it to the table, grinding the coconut and then cleaning it all up is at least (if not more) work that just working it out with a knife. If you want it shredded there's no better way to go though!

Informative. However when getting the juice out the Coconut. Picking or Punching two holes into the eye of the Coconut gets juice to flow out faster than just one hole. Might also be a good idea to have that Cleaver Knife sideways from your upper body so no chance a person accidentally hack themselves on raising the Cleaver. Much safer with the Cleaver edge facing sideways from person than edge facing their face. Good video otherwise.

You uh, apparently don't know too much about coconuts. x'D First off, the water in the GREEN, less ripened coconut is far more nutritional and better tasting than the brown, matured coconut. However, the meat in the brown coconut is better tasting than that of the green coconut. Oh, and do beware of coconut milk. It's a laxative.
