    I used to open young coconuts in the way you presented in this video, which is messy and dangerous. Later I learned a trick from a friend from Cambodia, which is much easier to get the liquid. Instead of slashing the tip portion, you just need to use a kitchen knife to cut off the soft portion (about half an inch thick) of the bottom (the flat side) to expose the hard shell. Then you will find a soft spot on the hard shell. You just need to use the tip of a knife or a chopstick to punch through that the soft spot (very easy). You can then insert a straw into the coconut to drink the liquid. To get the internal white meat, I haven't found a way better than yours. However, typically I don't bother to break the coconut for the meat because it is only a thin layer of meat. After drinking, I just throw away the coconut.

    I recently purchased a white coconut and love it. I was amazed how much water I got from 1 coconut. No more brown for me. Went back to market and noticed blue spots on exterior so I didn't buy it but brought it to managers attention. If mold is on the outside should I not purchase? Thank you Mike Coffey

    If this young coconut is imported product,dont forget to wash its husk.Its has Chemical coat to prevent fungi ETC.(This multi-chemical is dangerous and cannot remove simply by simple wash)-*-
    And its better to peel top of young coconut around the area you want to open(for make sure about chemical and not to let its husk mix with its water)
    My method is a little different (I am Thai and NOT Good at using Chopper)
    Then I afraid to use sharp side to cut it. -*-
    I just peel the top part like this clip at the open area,and hold coconut with my left hand.Then use spine of the chopper(make sure its a heavy one) slam that area with proper force then you can open without dent your chopper or risk your finger -..-.
    Its water may spill a little(or not) if you proper hold it and slam its nice.
    beware of recoiled from the chopper!!

    Oh cool. comment just posted. Umm ok so one question I had for you seeing there was a reason why I was researching coconut water. I know they are good for the electrolytes but where I am (Canada), I don't see green coconuts often but there are the packaged type and I know some are more pure (no sugar added) but I know they must all be pasteurized. Do you know if that affects the electrolytes? I would guess no. What do you think?

    This method looks a lot messier than what I am used to. I prefer to get rid of the husk completely (husk removers are essentially pry-bar stakes that you smash the husk onto before you pry it apart) and then freeze the nut until the water inside is completely solid. A gentle whack or two on the shell with a hammer and - POP! - the pressure causes the shell to crack into easily manageable pieces, leaving the meat and water in a clean, round, totally edible package. From there, you can just thaw the ball in a dish and use however you like. No shreds of husk or wasted meat. Apart from the freezing/thawing time, it takes maybe 3-5 minutes of actual work. Well worth the wait.

      @healthnutnation 9 років тому

      Melanie Dodge I'm going to try this method Melanie. I've never heard of it before. You're right about the husk. I now remove it all (with a knife) around the area where I am cutting, before whacking it. But your method would eliminate the waste of coconut water that spills. Thanks!

    Morning drink? Grab your favorite cup. Add some milk, tea, a slice of ginger, (maybe some sugar if you're feeling sassy), boil it together and you've got magic. I also like to add on microwaved marshmallows for froth, and crushed peppermints like sprinkles. WAAAAAY better than a morning cup of coffee.

    It would help to clear the husk form the area you're planning to do your opening.Doing so will make it easier to crack the shell with less attempts.Just saying..

    • @healthnutnation
      @healthnutnation 10 років тому

      Thank you for this comment. Since doing the video I've realized that clearing as much as the husk from where I'm planning to open, makes for a much less messy job. I've considered re-doing the video to show this, but haven't had time yet. Hopefully people will read your comment and do it! Thanks!

    She forgot to tell you to shake your coconut. If you hear sloshing, it's probably missing a lot of potential coconut water. If it's silent, then it's either full or empty; in that case, it's pretty obvious based on how heavy it is.

    Great presenter, but as many have mentioned the opening method was less than ideal. A novice could have a glancing blow and hit the left hand/arm. Also the shell cracks too much and would contaminate the inside contents.

      Have you heard about the amazing COCO JACK yet?I I love how safe and easy it is to open young coconuts with this tool. Note: It does not work on mature "brown hairy" coconuts, just the young coconuts with the white outer husk (not sure about the ones with the green husks outside of that). Put in AVO as your discount code if you order anything from the CocoJack website for a 10% discount. www.coco-jack.com/pages/instructional-videos-how-to-use-the-coco-jack

      Why not eat coconut meat, serious? You never eat fresh young coconut meat??? its best part of coconut is sweet & soft, taste smell good.
      Old coconut meat (coconut's flesh or coconut jelly) is tough to eat because it's old & less sweeter, not worth to try, old coconut meat is best to make coconut oil & coconut milk.
      You can make coconut milk from old coconut meat, its easy!!!

    I think what you are doing is wrong. I personally think that once you open young coconut, you should consume it immediately, otherwise it doesn't taste good anymore.
    To have it cold, just refrigerate the coconut before opening it.
    I also open it other way around, it's much easier. Instead of pouring it to a bottle I just use a straw so I don't have to make a large mess or anything like that...
