Opening a coconut is not a mission impossible... essential are a hammer, a screwdriver and a corkscrew! Let's see how to do on the cooking tutorial by Yellowsaffron.
    ***
Opening a coconut is not a mission impossible, essential for being able to taste a bit of summer is a hammer, a screwdriver and a corkscrew.
    Let's see how to do.
To tell if a coconut is good, weigh it in your hand and shake, if it's fresh you'll hear the sound of water inside.
Pierce the eyes on top of the coconut with a sharp object, a corkscrew for example.
If you can't make a hole, try with a screwdriver and a hammer.
Take a glass and pour in the water coming out of the coconut.
To use it as a drink, strain it first.
Hit the coconut hard with a hammer to crack it open, repeat the operation to reduce the shell into smaller pieces.
Use the knife as a lever to separate the meat from the shell. Wash the coconut and taste it. To store it for a few days, cover with its own water and keep in the fridge.
To make shredded coconut or coconut milk, scrape away the thin dark skin with a vegetable peeler.
    Grate the meat.
Put in a bowl and cover with boiling water, mix well and let it rest for at least 30 minutes.
Strain the meat through a cheesecloth to extract the coconut milk, that you can use to flavor cakes, ice creams and exotic dishes.

Excellent! Just have one more thing to add: prior to extracting the milk, I suggest grinding it up with the help of a mixer (using warm water or milk) to reduce the flesh into a shake / smoothie. One can then pass it through a white and clean cotton cloth so as the pure thick milk comes. It's much more flavourous and tastes wonderfully like a tropical coconut.

Hello, nice video. I have made an observation concerning coconuts which I would like to talk about and is concerning the "eyes"; you can see that everytime, one of the eyes of the coconut is easy to take off, even with a soft piece. To be more exact, it is the higher most eye of the three, as you are holding the coconut straight up wards. So, even with a kitchen knife you can take off parts of the hole, and empty the milk of the coconut from that single hole, or even put a straw in and start drinking immediately - there should be no need for a screwdriver or such, greets :)

I wonder if it would be possible to take out the coconut water with that only 1 hole because there's no other way for the air to get inside

Here's the secret to opening Coconuts that many who have not grown up with them don't know.
The idea is to fully crack the shell with one blow, anymore then that cause the meat to stick to the interior. In the island a nice smooth rock and experience help with locating the soft spot. Hope this helps...

My apartment building has 4 floors: basement, ground, 1st and 2nd. Up the middle of the building is a lightwell with windows all around. I live on the 1st floor, so to open my coconut after emptying it, I tied it in a bag and dropped it out a window to the basement floor.
Your idea is so much better. I'll be sure to try it next time!

Since most people keep screwdrivers in a toolbox, usually not very clean and since this is to be used on an edible food product, might I suggest that if you are going to use a screwdriver, ensure it is a clean screwdriver, preferably washed and disinfected with isopropyl alcohol or some other kitchen-utensil-safe product. As for the knife, I would not use a thin pairing knife as shown inthe video, I totally bent the tip trying to do something similar; it was a dumb move on my part. :)

so we didnt know this last summer, and after poking holes to get the water out, we kept trying to cut it open with a knife. it didnt work and i mumbled, it would be easier to smash it on the floor. my boyfriend thought im serious, threw the coconut on the ground, and, voilá. it worked haha

This could also be a lesson on how NOT to use a knife. Fortunately, you did not slice off your thumb or impale your hand. However, it's only a matter of time if you continue this practice with sharp knives. You should NEVER hold what you are cutting with a knife and use your hand as a leveraged base.

I just get the weeak spot on the upper side of the coconut with the blunt side of the knife,
Removing the shell on the top, Making a hole then put the juice in a glass, And contineu with the blunt side of the kitchen knife removing the shell, And it is more effective because you dont shatter the flesh, so you have beautifull 2 clean coconut half's :P

if the coconut's water is brown, is not good. also there is a fastest way to open it... one of the three holes if you press it, it makes a hole easy, have your thumb pressing this hole and then hit it on a hard surface. the coconut will break much easier.
