StarCraft is getting a remaster in summer 2017. The new StarCraft Remastered offers upgraded graphics & visuals, high resolution widescreen support, improved audio and matchmaking. We compare the graphics of original StarCraft with the Remastered version, all scenes are captured from the closed multiplayer beta. We played in 4K.

@@user-dg3ru2pr3f remaster looks like a shitty cartoon, zerg in particular. they forced their shitty hand painted style on a game that was originally rendered in 3d with actual materials, metal with reflectivity etc. Another game fucked up by activision

For me, to be honest. This is what a remaster should look like. It smoothes things out and it keeps the old flair. The new graphics is what i saw back then.

They didn't do anything, they just pasted the same 3D models into 2D and they call it remastering, they'd better have made a StarCraft 2 DLC, putting in the StarCraft 1 campaign would have been the best

As opposed to WC3 Reforged which revamped the visuals entirely while robbing them of a lot of their flair. Everything's just so much more muted in Reforgered and has a little less personality.

that's because back then, it didn't look pixelated on your 1024x768 CRT. now it looks like crap on a big HD monitor.
The comparison isn't correct. The 'original' mode doesn't actually feature original Starcraft graphics. It looks worse than original Starcraft.

No, it does compare the original pixelated graphics to modern day ones.
Monitor/TV technology and moderns graphics make the original look even worse, since we’re used to the newest iteration of graphics, older graphics start decaying.
I actually had the same thought because I didn't remember the original graphics being this Pixelqted either. I still have my original SC copy and fired up the G4 mac laptop. In a direct comparison the original graphics look much better than the SD remastered graphics. Kinda disappointed that they did that.
The game needs to be played to be appreciated, especially the Zerg. When I switched back and forth on my machine it was almost unbelievable that I had played the game for so long with the original graphics. The Zerg units look so muddled and confusing when there are large huddles of them (which there nearly always are because its Zerg)
The Zergs wasn't cleared With the old graphics, With this New version they'l Will win a lot. For the Protoss and terrans they are much better too

ahhh yes Starcraft 1 when i was like 13 years old, sleepover at my best friends house back then, start Starcraft up and play until like 1 in the Morning or longer and then jump on the couch to eat chips and watch Wrestling until you fall asleep... the good old days long gone...

Those days was real to me. This modern day adult lifestyle is all about Rent and work and don't drive fast so the cops don't come and lawsuit is being placed. Paying insurance, worried if you smell nice etc. The days you talked about WERE REAL to me.

I don't know, the remastered looks more cartoony for me. The original looks realistic but pixelated, maybe that's just how my mind fills up the gap of detail. The new ones by contrast clearly look like drawings, high-res drawings, no room for imagination. It's about 2:15 in the video where I realized this.
@@SystemUpdate310 I think it is because the surrounding landscape features lack that level of crispness. Starcraft had a unique way of hiding its graphical limitations by making everything kind of blur together but using extremely precise pixel art to differentiate assets. It made everything pop but also look consistent.
@@SystemUpdate310 It was. If we think about it, the games had always great art that were given freely to the players.. Is like reading a book, the mind fills the gaps and creates its / their own world. =)
This looks really good. Assets are Sharp but remain with the same style.

It's not really right, it would have been nice to have the 3D models they already have and not images, the game feels like always, they could have done a campaign in StarCraft 2 but starcraft isn't worth it

Why wouldn't it? it's a remaster not a reboot or sequel or re-design. They are just more detailed and animated as a remaster should be.

Actually the portraits were the most drastically changed. They used Starcraft 2 looking models for many of the characters and a lot of charm is lost.

until you get Diablo 2 Remaster just download Belzebub Mod for Diablo 1 because this is pretty much more then a remaster since it adds so much to the game like new Monsters and Special Enemys, hundreds of new weapons and even 2 new classes for the game... ofc all new Resolutions are supported...
Thankfully you can play the classic version for free.

but if the AI and limited unit control is annoying then you can play the starcraft mass recall mod, which is pretty damn amazing but i am spoiled that i can select more than 8 or so units
i think that graphics that we experienced back in the day was different than the classic pixelated version we see here, since we all used CRT tv's back then which viewed the classical art in a better way.
I really like how they're remastering StarCraft so that it is more closer to modern gaming.
The gameplay itself is fine. It's just the game has been needing a fresh coat of paint, wide screen support, and more refined & cleaned up details.
I am excited.

Maybe it is my love to the old good days. But I remember in my heart the classic one looking like the HD. I couldn't tell the difference if there was no example to compare.
Yeah it's really only a big change when you really zoom in, thr original graphics were already pretty great, specially for the time, they were just low resolution.

I like the remastered. But I have to admit that the original StarCraft had a cinematic look. And the remastered is more cartoonish.
I came here to look how WC III Reforged compares to StarCraft Remastered. Well, nothing. This one is made with so much love and detail. WC III Refunded was rushed and made by a 3rd party company :-/

Starcraft Remastered and Warcraft III Reforged were both made by the same third party company tho...
Actually it was still blizzard's decision on that end. That same company was the one who did Starcraft remastered. Blizzard had the final say on how things would look so Blizzard is at fault. I'm not sure who is trying to put the blame on that third party company, but its pretty obvious they're trying to damage control and trying to deflect all the outrage.

Did everybody forget the SCR issues on launch? Ladder was also missing and 2v2 is still not here, even though it was promised.

It seems to be too polished.
The gritty charcoal muddied Firebat should not be that plastic looking. But the terrans do look more like they are really plated behind tons of metal.

But the Zerg is reason for the hate, and its good to do this.
Making the Zerg look like this tumorous and vile race again appeals to the hardcore fans, if they dont hate it then it wont be changed and all the work for the game might find itself to been a bit of a waste off money and resources. So let them hate to improve it I'd ask you to.

Zerg looks _bad_ remastered. Not that it's ugly or sg. but it has lost it's slippery looking, oozing "yuck" factor :) It looks plastic, just as the other 2 races, but it's okay-ish for them, not for zerg.
I agree, it's especially true for queen which is so ugly that it reminds me of an Uka Uka from Crash Bandicoot (PS1) keeps staring at me.

other than the appearance, the animation on the buildings seem to be mostly made from morphs rather than actually model animation like the original was, as a result, looks much flatter.
Yeah i agree, they look too "clean" on remastered, and they are suposed to look nasty and gross but cool at the same time

I have to say they really did a good job of this and appeared to have resisted the temptation to 're imagine' or retcon the designs. But are these 3D models or sprites? Is this using the SC2 engine or did they upgrade the original?
Its the original engine, but with hd sprites. You can switch between the old and new graphics with a button ingame.
Its 2d, there was no reason to make it in 3d because you cant change the camera angle

Cant believe people complain. You can get the original BW for free now and it features the old graphics. You can even get the new one and switch to old graphics if you like them better. There's literally no reason to whine about these graphics, unless you preordered before looking at the textures or some shit.

Honestly, the transmissions could have been kept. They felt like they were fuzzy on purpose. Like it had a meaning of being millions of miles away.

Huh why is the Remastered version closer to how I remember it.
I still prefer the original look mainly for old pixels, colors, and FMV scenes. I like the old CG communication portraits. It added more depth in mystery. It certainly made the atmosphere more creepy-like. The new portraits sort of lose that, because they're more realistic, and lack some animation. They also look more still, and dull to a point.
The old visuals still used might look dated to some people, but I actually felt they were great on the interface. Maybe nostalgia affects that a little.
Star Craft II looks great, but the original has a lot more that was special about it.

I bought the game and unfortunately there is one thing that is bothering me a lot. I play the game on slow because I prefer to see the units moving with realistic step cadence and movement overall, not moving very fast on the screen like tiny toys. The problem is the units (marines for example) are skipping when they move in an even worse manner than the original. It's so unpleasant that I quit playing after 4 missions.

This game is sadly bad optmized , you must run it in low settings without shadows.

Are there any other benefits besides graphics for the remastered version? Cheat codes wont work on the free version for some reason and I heard they work on the remastered version. Any new stories or something new? If these are the only differences then I don't think it's really worth 15€ sorry

On one hands it's cool to see the detail, but on the other, everything feels like it's not integrated or pops too much. The pixelation of the original really adds to the style and imagination, also looks very gritty. Remaster honestly looks like one of those 2000s 2D games/Starcraft clones with extra detail for the sake of detail, not in a good way.
Zerg and Terran definitely look more interesting in the original in my opinion.
I think I like the original better.. for one, there's a lot of nostalgia tied to the low-res-ness of it all, and two, the absolute shite quality of the portraits had this sense of mystery and left a lot to the imagination, which was pretty damn captivating when I played this game as a kid. lol

I really don't like how the Zerg buildings seem more still,the still pulse,but only parts of them,whereas the entire building used to pulse, really seeming alive.
The HD loses a lot of color and shadows. Plus it misses the character with in the original. I never owned watched or played a Starcraft game in my life but even I can tell the small differences. But they did an amazing enough job I’d say. It’s hard to carry over the character from the original when your job is to copy the old

Most likely no.
This remaster uses the same engine - just upscales sprites to 4k resolution.
In 20 years if we will upscale it to 16k - you won't see the difference.
