We live in Kingsport and we have some of the best cops in the country. My hubby is a retired officer, he is an amazing man. Good to have great cops here in Tennessee
I love watching your videos. What fascinates me is the commentary. You notice things most people wouldn’t pay any attention, then apply what you’ve observed to your travels, whether it’s train direction, or weather, or just an historical observation based on having been there 7 years ago. You provide a perspective on this country we wouldn’t see otherwise. That is a calling. Good job!
Same here and he makes the mundane comical with his easy going attitude and comments, like when the bird crapped on his bucket lid. What he said makes me laugh and the way nothing really fazes him, just puts lid back on. I can relate to him, I've hich hiked in some of the most craziest and dangerous places long distance, no money no food and the wrong clothes for the weather and just hoped for the best and went with the adventure. Every time it worked out even if there were a few hard days. That was years ago I'd never try it again but I'm sure happy watching Shoestring's adventures, I realise we are kindred spirits
Hey Hobo, I am new to yr channel I live in the UK. I love watching yr vids & getting to see yr country from the other side of the tracks as it were. I really like yr down to earth attitude & real life ways. Stay safe Hobo. 🇬🇧 🏴 🚉 👍
I love the sound of those engines. Up until they closed down the depot in my home town i loved waking up in my grandmas house to the sound of an idling loco. The relief valves were music to my ears.
I discovered your channel only a few week ago and have been hooked like everyone else. My grandparents lived a half mile from a railroad where I spent most my time watching freight trains. Back then they still had cabooses. Thank you for your knowledge of trains and your honest approach. 👍🏻
I would love to visit some of these little almost empty towns you go to. It's sad to see them deserted but also so nostalgic. Thanks for letting me see all these and telling us the history through your videos, stay safe thanks
Hi Shoestring, I live in the UK and really enjoy your uploads, my grandfather was a coach builder for GWR back in the 1940’s . Every video you upload is great information and enjoyable , I’d love to see a video from start to finish of a trip. Hope you have a Merry Christmas & New Year. Same to everyone of your subscribers. Keep well and stay safe all. ✌🏻
My run in with the cops in that town was nothing but positive. The K9 cop that came over to talk to us, talked to us for an hour and was just as curious (in a non criminal) way as we were of him. It was a good experience.
I grew up beside the railway line my dad was a ganger after school I use to down while the steam engine was shunting and sit in the drivers seat those where one of the best moments in my life, I to joined the railway but after a few years I signed up to serve my country now feet up i enjoy videos like this, keep up the great work young man
Your videos bring back memories growing up in Chicago back in the 70's and 80's. We used to roam the railroad yards and tracks, we would hop on a slow moving train and ride it a few blocks. Didn't go very far, had to make it back home for dinner! Stay safe and merry Christmas and happy new year Shoestring!!!
Nice video, Shoestring. The big building in the yard is the CSX Car Facility bldg where the "bad-outs" are repaired. But since the yard was closed a couple of years back, I'm not sure whether there's anybody left to work on the damaged coal cars. The 10 million dollar bridge to nowhere was finished just a short while before CSX laid off 400 workers in Erwin. When the town was busy and the trains were frequent and there was lots of train activity in the yards, there were long waits at the road crossings which after years of planning, resulted in the big overhead bridge. At the time just leading up to the layoffs, there were 11 coal trains a day thru there, each with 110 cars loaded with coal. Some went to South Carolina....the rest was shipped to China. Erwin is a great place and I miss it a lot and I hope someday that CSX will re-ignite its business and start popping again. What a place when everything is working. Thanks for the video. Fred
Humor. Dry humor. It's the spice of life. If you can make someone laugh you've eased their suffering, if just for a moment. It's good for the soul. Your doing great service Shoestring. This is why we love you. Have a merry and safe Christmas.
I was going back and watching some of your older videos and ran across this one. I made a number of trips to Erwin about 15 years ago. We purchased and ran the old Manville Refractory plant and ran it for a few years. It was a unique location because the plant was bordered on either side by the mainline tracks and you could occasionally get stuck in the plant during train operations. It was really nice country. We came up I-26 from the South from Augusta.
Growing up in Needles Ca everyone is a railroader, cop, fireman or tow truck driver. My Dad was a conductor for the Parker Az local then BNSF for 42 years. Love the history and knowledge you share. I have a ton of old black and white original pics of steam engines in and around needles, Barstow, Kingman. I have some cool old steam engine accident site pics
Great thumbnail Shoestring!! He does look like a nice guy. Cool glasses!! I've been away for a few weeks... So glad to have a bunch of videos to watch. I need to catch up... Last video was you traveling from Tennessee to my hometown of Atlanta... The train runs super slow and parallel to the road near Chamblee-Doraville.. I'm always looking for your tags and Stobe's ... I'm going to come across one at some point!! Take care and keep warm 🇺🇲👋😬🎄
I just started watching your videos shoestring thank you for sharing this with us! Though it might be boring to others. I and a lot of others just find it to be interesting and aw inspiring because I can just imagine some of the things you go through in that life style! A part of me wonders how I would do and kind of wish I had that kind of freedom but I digress! Happy travels to you Shoestring hope God keeps you safe and happy good sir!
Hey Shoestring you inspire me with all the places you go all around the United States and I just love all your knowledge you share be safe and keep on with your uploads
Great video! I used to backpack across the country back in the day, never traveled by rail... Not able to get out and away much anymore, so, I can travel along with you via your videos! Be safe out there Brother 🙏✌️😎 Life Is Not A Problem To Be Solved... Life Is A Journey To Be Lived 🌹 ✌️ Journey Well Brother's and Sister's ✌️😎
Hobo...you crack me up brother! I sure wish I had your energy and attitude...you are an inspiration! Your videos are fascinating, informative and well put together...that camera has a lot of power to bring in the distance and it has great clarity too....Glad the cops didn't mess with you...good attitude of live and let live! Take care!
This old couple was on a walk, when a pigeon flies by and pooped on the old woman's head. Yuck she screamed get me some toilet paper! Ole man What for He must be a half a mile away by now.
Hey Shoestring..... I have to admit your my new addiction!!! I grew up on the railroad tracks as a kid. Lived right on the Amtrak lines in Edgewood Md. I always dreamed of hoping a freight train and riding it to where ever. Keep up the vids man, luv em!!! Stay safe brother.
every single time I get to felling a little down you seem to upload a video and cheer me right up. happy sure beats the crap out of sad, thanks shoestring. this video has a great combination of you, narration and trains. merry Christmas.
Wow. Found your channel completely by accident. A couple videos in and I find a video of my dinky little hometown, Erwin. Been to that library a bunch of times, not to mention little league games at that ballfield. A number of relatives that work/worked for CSX, including a great-grandfather that worked there when it was Clinchfield. Haven't seen it in any of your videos (yet), but I bet riding along the Nolichucky at the TN/NC border is some good scenery. I've walked it a number of times to fish up there. Recognized the JC Cardinals ballfield in the other JC video. Went to school at ETSU. Small world.
Just found your channel by complete coincidence and have been binge watching your videos and I must say they are very entertaining. I'm watching from a small trainless province called Newfoundland and labrador in Canada. Cheers and safe travels
Best wishes Shoestring! I am from the mountains above the Horseshoe Curve in Altoona PA. You ever find yourself in the area, be glad to offer you anything you need. I watch the live cam all he time trying to gauge the hobo scene here. I believe it is making a substantial comeback given the current state of affairs.
I was stationed in Kentucky for a few years so I did a bit of traveling in KY and TN. Those rolling hills are bringing back memories of me in my mid 20's.
Shoestring,As you where telling the stories about the skunks and paranormal. I found myself smiling and listening completely. I do enjoy the “Story time” from you as much as the train rides. Thank you!
Great video Shoestring!! Nice to see a good cop! Looks like that was a busy yard at one time. When a bird dumps on you that is good luck!! Almost to 50 thousand subs!! B Safe
Met an old Machinist who used to work there and got furloughed 5 years ago. I work up in Kingsport TN. Good to see your videos on my UA-cam feed. Safe travels
Just found you, and I have loved trains since the 50's. I was foolish then and know the dangers of hitchhiking on trains. I grabbed one and I was flapping like a flag. Another time I jumped off one moving really fast and got ruffed up. But back then there were those hobo camps. I'm from Denver, CO. To see the states like that, take care, you are a wealth of knowledge on trains.
I've been watching all your videos and even though there was no train riding in this one it was a great 20 minutes chillin with shoestring. You had me cracking up at the end with your bird poop analysis!
If you ever find yourself stopped in Cornelia, Georgia, holler at me. Me and the family would love to have you and hear your stories. Love the videos. Be safe out there, man
Hey Shoestring. Been following you for a week or so now. Super awesome videos brother. You know some pile about the railroad! I find it super fascinating and would live to save up and spend a week or two traveling with you! Looks like alot of fun!
Shoestring I love your videos and your continentals travels. You are authentic and we need more people like you today. Im an ol Tennessee boy myself. Have you ever passed through Gallatin Tn on your travels? I live a little north of there and I love trains and training just like you do. Be safe my friend and God Bless you during your travels.
I would ask my dad on occasion if he could loan me some money and usually for a fine or something but he would say “Son you caught me at a bad time, I’ve got it”. Merry Christmas Shoestring and everyone with the Spirit of Adventure and Freedom. Stay blessed up!
Wow, I used to travel up I-26 a lot. Going up to Gray, Wise KY, and Prestonsburg KY. That rail yard always caught my attention. It’s sad to know that it has closed.
Hey Shoestring. One day if I ever meet you, which I hope I will..I would love to hear some of your stories. I've met people from all over and some of their stories had me crying laughing! I'll bet you have some pretty good ones to tell. Stay safe. And Merry Christmas!
One winter a skunk came from the crawl space and pushed himself up in the wall at tub faucet access. 02:00 the dog figured out he was there and he sprayed. Woke up and thought the house was on fire. Just an acrid smell, not like you’d think of a skunk. It was just like you said. Thought it was electrical. We got rid of it in 2 days with an ozone machine though.
I know Mr. shoestring I’ve been enjoying your videos on UA-cam. I’ve always wanted to do that junk train and ride. My uncle Bob used to do it back in the days. I enjoyed all his stories good luck and be safe
End on bird poop???? While watching a live video on model railroads I jokingly mentioned that you and Jawtooth were with me. Others who were logged in on the video thought I was for real, and they went wild, man you guys are Rock Stars in the railroading community. 12/06/2020
That bird tagged you Mr. Shoestring! Had a buddy who used to conduct and later engineer out of Erwin. Hate seeing that yard empty now. Bostic is the same way too. Got family out in Dante/St. Paul Va. and the yard is empty there now also. Lynnwood yard in N.C. is closed now so I hear with no traffic west up the loops to Ashville. Things sure have changed with this new railroad philosophy.
Glad you are doing well! Heard about a train derailment that happened a couple of days ago in Vado, NM close to where I live & it made me think of you & the dangers of riding. Thankfully no one was killed in the derailment & the railroad company has posted a $10000 reward for information... said a couple of railroad ties (perhaps they meant spikes?) were placed on the track by an individual or individuals.
Been following your posts for several months. Live in Sarasota. Just watched "Polar Express" for about the umpteenth time. At the end Tom Hanks says "One Thing about trains... It doesn''t matter where they're going... Just deciding to get on" thought about you. God Bless and Happy Trails... Merry Christmas!!!
Turning the old depot's into libraries must be a statewide project, here in Harrogate Tn ours is a library as well and very similar in construction. Ours is a light blue color and much smaller. They pulled up the tracks that went through here but they still run right beside us in Cumberland Gap where it comes from Knoxville and goes through a tunnel in Cumberland Gap into Middlesboro Ky.
Great to see you are sporting a WW&F 2foot RR bumper sticker from Alna Maine. When you find yourself back this way, a pickup truck ride to go see is on offer....
Making these videos actually helps you. Because it makes you famous with railroad workers and rail cops. Which in turn makes them look away or be lenient with you if you are tresspassing.
Hey Hobo, it would be interesting to know your background. Where you a Veteran and what made you decide to ride the rails? I remember as a Kid after my father left us. My uncle had returned home from Vietnam. He was like my best friend and he spent a lot of time with me and was there for me after my dad left. He loved trains and had a huge model railway set in my Grandmother’s basement. I developed a love of trains over my uncle. He passed away and I miss him. His love of trains along with him comforting me over my father I will never forget. Please be safe out there and thank you for sharing your videos. Semper Fidelis!
RIP Shoestring! You will be sorely missed! You will live on through the magic of UA-cam, and we can all continue to enjoy your presence.
God I'm gonna miss this guy.
Things were getting better for him, it's sad

Another excellent upload from Shoestring. His content is more interesting than most of the travel shows I see on tv.
You have a good heart Mr. Shoestring, seem like a mighty fine gent to be around. Thanks for the upload!
I've been around and hopped trains ALL my life(49 now) and I love ya brother!
Shoestring - you are a true railroad historian! I've learned so much. You are so descriptive & your videos are A+...Thank you!

I live in Kingsport, TN, but am from Brownwood, TX. First time I heard tell of both towns mentioned in one place anywhere. God bless you
End on bird poop????
I like to listen to your stories. You are a talented dude. Be safe.
15:50 .... "In the Darkest Hours of the night" .... hobostobe .... RIP
Is that the same Cumberland railroad from video I see on the tube?
@@alcopower5710 I'm not sure, I haven't heard of Cumberland Railroad. So I know is the town of Cumberland Gap
Great to see you are sporting a WW&F 2foot RR bumper sticker from Alna Maine.
When you find yourself back this way, a pickup truck ride to go see is on offer....
We miss you string.., RIP brother 🙏
So sad. He was a gem.
Making these videos actually helps you. Because it makes you famous with railroad workers and rail cops. Which in turn makes them look away or be lenient with you if you are tresspassing.
Your videos just get better and better. Great engine shots at the end! Be safe.
May your travels be warm and safe.
Merry Christmas Hobo Shoestring, I live about 15 miles from Schenectady, New York
You are really good at shooting video and so knowledgeable of the places you go..So easy to enjoy your video's..:)..Thank You!!!!
Hey shoestring I've always wanted to go on one of those rides man head up north towards Buffalo
