- Trains at speed at the Border: Carlisle and Gretna
In the rain at Carlisle and Pendolinos and Intermodals at speed through Gretna Junction
16-18 June 22
A relatively short video this week given the current lack of trains running on my usual days for being out with my camcorder.
We begin at Carlisle with visits on two successive days, followed by an afternoon spent at Gretna Junction, north of the city. It was surprisingly wet in Carlisle on the second visit but dry and blustery at Gretna.
Gretna has proved to be a great spot for recording the speeding trains, even with the speed restrictions for the junction from the West Coast Main Line to the Sou' Western route to Glasgow via Dumfries and Kilmarnock. Looking south from my vantage point I could see beyond the M6, over the River Esk and beyond to Floriston, probably three miles away!
Two corrections to the captions,
1) I mixed up the two overbridges just north of my vantage point. The border between England and Scotland is at the further of the two bridges, where the line passes over the River Sark and not the nearer one, which is a road bridge.
2) I dated one of the Carlisle visits as 16th July 2022 - no I haven't mastered time travel yet and it was, of course, 16th June.

Nice to meet you in the flesh at the NRM the other day. A nice mix of trains running on the main line, you have one heck of a zoom lens. Bye for now, take care, stay safe, and have fun.
Thanks Carl. It's surprising how effective the zoom is on my camcorder! Great to meet you too!
Great shots, Leslie! I remember we waved, but had no idea if we waved out the correct side. The train was packed, because it picked up folks from a canceled train. No chance to hop off and say "hello." Fortunately, we did that in York!
It was very busy and to be honest I didn't actually think I'd spot you. Anyhow, as promised I recorded the actual train!
Hi Leslie - great shots around the Border with trains coming off the GSWR along with all your usual stuff. 😀 cheers Euan
Thanks Euan
