I'd heard that the weekly DB Cargo trains of Gypsum from Tyne Dock were being taken over by Freightliner and running via the Tyne Valley from w/c30 September. I;d been led to believe that the run on 20th September might be the ast for DB Cargo. Unfortunately I was wrong - its run again (finally???) on 27th September!
The Cumbrian Coast line over Eskmeals Viaduct reopened on 23 September. I caught the last flask trains to and from Heysham Power Station over the WCML via Carlisle Kingmoor. Well - until DRS have another reason not to send them via the coast line and Ulverston.
Of course the big thing was the last day of Royal Mail trains on the railways. This was a sudden announcement. I managed to capture two southbound workings. There were two more northbounds - one ran 46 minutes early through not being looped at Oubeck and the other was scheduled around Midnight / 1am. I missed the first and wasn't going to go for the last one!
We've also got the West Highland Pullman (Day 1) at Penrith and a GBRf convoy of 66s.

It's sad Royal Mail have decided to use 60mph lorries instead of 100mph trains that are better for the environment than their green lorries. I hope like last time their decision is reversed and they go back to using rail again for the long distance requirements.
We'll have to see. Certainly Royal Mail apparently can load a fleet of lorries quicker than they can a train. But thats not a real argument.
@@LeslieGilpinRailways They probably can, it did seem to take some time to load the train at Low Fell, only a 4 car unit there.
great footage les as always, I think it's a massive mistake not using the railways for royal Mail i don't think it will end well for them and they will need to re instate the mail trains

Will Varamis rail put in a bid for them , and finally put the current Monarch's insignia on them , something Royal Mail failed to do .

Amazon, evri etc are obviously cheaper and sometimes next day. Our postie is terrible. Stuff in wrong doors, terrified of dogs. Perfect job for a postie. Nugget 😂😂
I'm not sure but dont Varamis carry one of the parcels delivery company parcels to Mossend each night?

Hi Leslie, great video thanks. What do you think will happen to the now redundant Royal Mail 325 sets, will they be sold off ? presumably they can only be used for light freight such as parcels e.t.c. Regards Barry.

Thanks for another fascinating video Leslie. I wonder what the reasoning was to cancel the postal trains, those 90's Freightliners looked quite special. An interesting set of trains again.

Sounds like Carlisle station need to get some track lube sorted before some punter puts a claim in! And the vertical track movement at the joints when the Chirk log train went over needs a look too 😳

@@joshuaW5621 hard to say, as a Royal Mail manager had suggested that they could use a different operator.
I heard the Royal Mail had ended rail mail previously, and it didn't end well so they had to bring it back.
Seems absolutely crazy to shift to more road vehicles, especially as everyone is banging on about emissions.
Royal Mail's decision to end its in-house train service may result in it being contracted out. But the upshot will be even less mail on the railway. And in this day and age, that just doesn't make any sense, does it?
@@lisaodd3196 they did for a few years. We lost the mail sorted on trains leaving the low value mail on a slowly reducing network.
@@stephendavies6949 False economics to impress a new owner - though it was daft after privatisation of Royal Mail to directly own the stock.
There's a vast difference in what a lorry can carry and a 326 more trucks on the road now 😢
