Will it Run... Sideways??

- For today's adventure, let's remove the engine from our poor, sad, clapped out, left-for-dead lawnmower, and convert it from a vertical to a horizontal shaft engine! There are so many unloved and undesired engines out there because they run vertically. Let's see how easy this is, and what it takes!
On a side note - the camera I've been trying isn't the best, so please bear with me.

What's up, folks! I am cracking up because this video is gaining traction NOW, when I recorded it almost a year ago! As a result, I'm resurrecting this project to do a durability test and teardown. If interested, I'll see ya soon!
Edit: Here it is! Enjoy part II a year later 😁

I discovered that the oil slot switch wasn't necessary on accident as a kid, cause I didn't know any better, hah. Aluminum is good for a flipper cause if it flies off it won't hurt anything. You can cut a square chunk out of the deck of the mower, as an adapter to get from that weird round 3 hole setup they all have, you can even use it for a mount on a bike or other project. A $20 Chinese cloan dirt bike carb really makes throttle response better. Mower handle hoop is good for making a mounting frame, but it's pretty soft, so remember to use triangles if you weld with it.
Sounds like you have some great experience with this type of conversion! I like all of your suggestions, you have probably helped a lot of people. I also appreciate you subscribing. You put the channel over 950! 👍🏻🍻
Used to do it all the time when I was young. Never had any horizontal shaft motors so I had to improvise.
The hard part was making a carburetor work with no welding, no machine shop, and very little tools.
You need a pretty good piece of metal as an oil flicker, because at 2000 rpm and cold oil, it will just bend the metal back around the conrod.
I eventually found this out 😄
I did a followup video to this just recently and had to rethink my strategy. Thanks for the comment!
LOL .. Love the outtakes !
Hahah I had fun making them! Thanks for the comment!
My concern is the thin wall oil slinger ? It can bend above the oil level ?
Awesome video boss !
Thank you! I just released the follow-up video, and you'll see the fate of that slinger 😁
What is the silver do-hicky you use to unscrew the bolt in the middle of the mower blade adapter? My 12yo is tinkering and I am little help beyond the tools I have. 😂
Hey there! Do you mean the do-dad I used around 03:45? If so, it's referred to as a "puller!" Here are a few examples for you on good ole Amazon:
Orion Motor Tech Gear Puller Set, 3" 4" 6" 3 Jaw Puller Kit for Pulley Gear Bearing Flywheel Removal, Heavy Duty Pulley Puller with Reversible Jaws 3 pcs Bearing Puller Tool Kit a.co/d/f3kMAxg
Best of luck and have fun! 😊
Yes! Thank ya. :)
@@TractorFellahave you got any tips on how to get that piece off without a puller
Hello there!
I wish I had a good suggestion for you. Do you have an old blade you could bolt to the bottom. Once it's bolted on, maybe you could hit the blade to try to get it to release? Maybe try a pry bar between the engine case and the mower blade adapter? If you do that, just be careful not to crack the case. I hope one of those ideas helps. Good luck!
it would work better if you had a heavy flywheel like one off of a tiller, the light ones are fine if you have a blade for momentum
@@TractorFella no,, a blade would definitely not be safe,, if you can find a tiller engine they have a cast iron flywheel but it might be hard to find one that is interchangeable with a more modern engine.
Definitely not sketchy at all 😂✌️
😁😁
Maik again: do you really think it was just the wind? 👻 funny parallel to us: we have a yellow Labrador Sam and unfortunately our black old Labrador Yogi passed away last year.
I'm sorry to hear about your pup. That's the tough part about pets - they just don't live long enough!
Im using an awesome Suzuki m120x 2stroke lawnmower engine for my bicycle and they're no worries 👍
Sounds pretty sweet!!
@TractorFella even has a cast iron bore no cylinder head (all one piece) and needle roller bearings, 85kph. thank you awesomely for sharing your great experiments and experiences 👍
@simonallan9941 85! Dang, that's a ripper!
Absolutely! Thanks for tuning in!
this is useful now i can grab a 20 hp mower engine and put it on a golf cart
That sounds like fun! I'm hoping to revisit this later for some sort of durability testing. We will see. Good luck!
@@TractorFella ok i cant wait for the durability testing!
The test is out! Latest video on the channel if you're still interested. 🍻
@@TractorFella ok thanks
👍👍👍👍
Those engines are almost bulletproof.
It's still on the shelf! I'd like to do something fun with it in the future. Appreciate the comment 🍻
@@TractorFellaan kart?
That would be fun to try!
@tractorfella
Do you have an update on this? Is it still running?
Sorry, but there are no updates at this time. I still want to try to do a test of durability - I just need to figure out how! Don't worry, it'll be back! 🙂
Following up - I resurrected the project and did a little durability test. It's the latest video on the channel right now. Just in case!
