    Thanks so much for sharing what you got at the food bank this week. I will probably have to learn how to do this myself once I stop working. There is no way I can pay my utilities and the cost of food.

    Nice variety. Empty the chicken pouch into a strainer and squeeze it down with a spoon to drain it . That blue wilderness cat food is very good food also very expensive. Your food pantries are great .

    The last few mobile food pantries I went to were begging me to tell all my friends and take an extra portion because they had so much and not enough people were coming to get the food. They gave me the equivalent of 18lbs of bacon, (precooked packages) and all kinds of other stuff. I called my elderly aunt and uncle and told them I saw bacon go in the truck and they went and got the same thing. Yes the pears were mushy but everything else made it worth it.

    I’m curious to ask - you had said I think a couple YEARS a go that you were just in a little phase where you guys needed a little help. It’s been a couple years now. You have made these ‘hauls’ content over that time frame, have had time to stabilize your careers, etc. How long exactly will you keep taking advantage of these programs? When do you plan to stop? Aren’t they meant for just a short term stop-gap assistance/help not a long term thing? Isn’t it time to be done after a couple of years?

    • @weepingwillowhomestead
      @weepingwillowhomestead  4 місяці тому +3

      Food pantries are for as little or as long as you need assistance. I have actually asked the volunteers at both the pantries we visit and they have assured me that help is for any one who needs helps, for any length of time.
      We have and are doing things to help ourselves financially as best we can but in those two years we have had several set backs that make the pantry still a valid need. I truly pray that some day we will be able to not only no longer need them but will be in a place to give back.

    It’s crazy in my state. It really depends on where you live. I have neighbors that go every week. They have access to like four pantries and they give out so much stuff that a lot of times they’ll come over with a cart full of stuff for me and they’ll help give it out to like three or four other families. It’s really kind of weird like One time they got 4 gallons of milk five things of sweet potatoes. It’s really random. They don’t eat probably 50% of what they get and they’re not really allowed to turn it back. It’s really crazy because the food either just rots unless they can’t find anybody else to take it. I’m legally blind and disabled. I don’t drive before Covid. There was a group that would hand-deliver bags of vegetables from like farms where they were getting thrown out so they were mostly a vegan group but I eat tons of vegetables at my house every week so I was really happy to have it. Sadly they went away during Covid but it’s really terrible. My best friend can barely afford food but she’s embarrassed and will go to food pantry because she thinks that you know she should be able to she just can’t her parents literally have to choose between groceries and food and it’s wrong. They actually got their food stamps cut because they made $20 over the limit And it really makes me angry because it seems that people need it. Don’t get it but yet people that abuse the system I’ve known somebody that’s gotten $700 worth and they sell it and do drugs and it pisses me off so bad when people like my friends and her mom and dad. Sadly, where they live they’re really are no food pantries or anything so they’re kind of stuck.
    I have been thinking of going to the food pantry. The problem I have is because I’m visually impaired I don’t drive. I have to take Uber or Lyft. It would cost me around $40 round-trip to go to the food pantry and that would even though I can go to two or three month, I can’t afford that cost. My dog is now retiring and having to go to physical therapy and all of that money is going to have to go now to his treatment and transportation so I’m really stuck. I am really going to have to figure out how to use the food pantries because I have to pay for all of his physical therapy and transportation yeah I don’t know what I’m gonna do. .

      It is interesting how much it varies. Even just two counties over a friend stopped going to food pantries because she got so little it wasn't worth it.
      I am so sorry you are struggling. ❤️

    Does your pantry take intio account allergies of yourself and your family and any dietary issue because of heath that you need to follow such as heart disease and Diabetes. And anything else. Because getting something that one or more persons in your family can't have can be a problem.

    • @weepingwillowhomestead

      Ours allows you to shop so you can choose the things that best fit your needs. But we have had to completely skip sections due to not having diet friendly choices.

    What is a person to do if they don't qualify to receive food because they get too much money from Social Security. Where I live, I don't qualify for the food bank because I receive too much money. I am lucky enough twice a week. I go with my friend to her church and have a free dinner.

      Look for mobile food pantries in your area. Most say they require an ID and proof of residence, but they have never asked me.

      I understand that situation. I think it’s disgusting to treat people like that. Many people who receive SSA make above the food benefit cut off. However, the don’t get enough income to support themselves.

      I’m not sure where you live but in Wisconsin and Minnesota we have Ruby’s Pantry. Regardless of income, you can buy a share of food for $25. The shares are always worth considerably more and you can buy as many shares as you like. Perhaps you have something like that in your area?

      My food pantry's limit is $43k/year. I feel like I make pretty good money, but I still qualify. Plus they've never asked for proof. Maybe just tell them you make nothing. We all know social security isn't enough to get by

    I stopped watching when you said your mama cat has kittens every year. Get that poor cat spayed, you don't need to add that many kittens to the world. And she needs a break! Poor thing, how irresponsible. And I live in the country, people think all these cats eat mice, and they don't - they come and kill birds under my bird feeder and kill my chipmunks. They travel from your house to the neighbors' and poop all over their property, not yours.

    • @weepingwillowhomestead
      @weepingwillowhomestead  4 місяці тому +2

      We never have any issues finding new homes for the few kittens she has once a year. This is only her 3rd litter so far from over producing. She is well cared for and loved. Her kittens usually end up being barn cats that do help control the rodent population. And yes that can include chipmunks and such that can also be a nuisance to farmers. Cats living in the country tend to have shorter life spans than city cats due to natural preditors and such. This isn't cruel. It is the cycle of life.
