  • Welcome!
We are a homesteading, homeschooling family of 7. Due to recent events (job loss/career change, health issues, rising food costs, etc.) we are having a hard time making ends meet despite our best efforts at frugality. So we are tapping into our local food banks to help us feed our family. Come along as I show you what we are blessed with, what we add to it via grocery store and garden, and how I use it all to nourish our bodies.
Thanks for watching and God bless!

Thank you for sharing. I just went to a food bank a few days ago for the first time. I was so nervous but they were so kind and generous. It was videos like this that encouraged me to accept help. I was able to feel some relief that I have plenty of food. I didn’t realize how much I needed the help. Thank you for making these videos. ❤️

From Australia, where lamb is our meat!! Beat way for a rack of lamb is to defrost, rub the skin with olive oil, salt, pepper, rosemary and garlic cloves pierced in the fat side. Place fat up in a roasting tray with about 1-2 cups beef stock/broth, a splash of red wine if desired and some halves onions and carrots around it.
Roast until medium/medium well at 180 degreea Celsius, take out of pan and let rest about 10 min. Roast/airfry potatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin or any other veg ,you want while lamb is roasting.
Also steam some cauliflower, broccoli, green beans, corn etc
When lamb is resting, remove onion and carrots from lamb pan to serve with meal, add flour or corn flour to drippings, add water and make gravy.
Serve each plate with lamb and preferred veg, drizzle with gravy.
Lastly, enjoy a traditional Aussie Roast!!
Ps any leftover lamb/veg/gravy can be dices really small (especially the lamb) mixed together, put in a dish topped with mash/sweet potato mash and cheese and bakes until hot and cheese melted for a TRUE shepherds pie (because shepherds don't raise cow's!🤣🤣)

What a blessing in deed! I love how you talk about how your going to fix different means and snacks for the kiddos! Ingenious idea to sprout for chickens and keep them healthy since they are going to give you eggs when they start laying again. Some people just have to complain! You don’t even need to explain what you do! ❤

Simple living Alaska has chickens and they fish for salmon. The carcasses they don’t boil down for dog food, they give to their chickens. They said they lay eggs with the orangest yolks. Tasty little dinosaurs 🦖🐓 I kinda wish I could have some but they would become my pets.

Sear the rack of lamb on all sides on high heat in skillet with olive oil.Brush on brown mustard then coat with fresh bread crumbs mixed with lots of fresh garlic, fresh or dried crushed rosemary or dried, thyme, salt and pepper. Drizzle olive over the mixture til moist, not wet. Place on a small rack in a baking dish and roast in a preheated 475 degrees for12-15 minutes. Sounds like a lot of work but is very quick!!!!! Yum!

I agree, hot and fast in the oven for lamb, either just seasoned or with a crust as you suggest. Don't put it in a crock pot, you have an expensive, delicate cut of meat, it should be pink in the middle. Lamb fat needs to be crisp, it's not nice all soggy from a slow cooker! Needs something sharp to cut the richness - mint sauce, redcurrant jelly, lemon or plain yoghurt all work depending on the spicing you use

You can bake the lamb ribs in your oven with your choice of seasoning with side of steamed rice or salad. You can also do sandwiches if you cook in slow cooker. The meat falls off the bone.

Lamb is best low and slow in your oven in my opinion. Go about preparing it pretty much like a beef roast in your oven. Keep temperature to about 275, keep rack of lamb covered over with aa lid or foil. Remove lid or foil for the last 15-30 minutes depending on your oven. Spices are pretty simple- salt, pepper, fresh or dried rosemary and thyme. Rub a bit of olive oil or avacado oil on the meat and then rub and shake on your spices. Lamb is "done" when it still looks quite red. Think of how a prime rib roast looks when it is at its best temperature- more red than pink. Of course you CAN cook it longer, but you will lose some of the juice, tenderness and sweetness from the lamb meat. Many people like to serve it with a mint jelly or a greek-type yogurt sauce. That is your preference. Personally, I HATE mint jelly. I would go with a barely warmed plain greek yogurt with a bit of the same spices I used on the meat- rosemary and thyme foe sure. It will get thinner as it warms on the stove. You don't need much, just enough to lightly drizzle over each chop you cut from the roast. That is MY way of making it. I am sure there are dozens of other ways than the way I do it. I am not a big fan of lamb, but it is a high protein meal which ia great for growing bodies! God Bless 🥰

wow, you got a lot of good food - that certainly should help this month. i do like lamb but have never cooked a rack. i'm sure there are sites with good recipes. i'd be tempted to shred the jumbo carrots. like carrot and raisin salad, or into soup. hope you all are on the mend. take care, stay well and warm.

Don’t ever feel bad for giving food from the food bank/pantries to you animals. They have to eat too! I would get tuna fish specifically for my cats because I don’t like seafood. My neighbor would get the canned salmon for his dog and cat. There is nothing wrong with feeding your animals because they are in fact dependent on you to take care of them in whatever way you are able to. This is why I think we should be able to claim our pets on our taxes 🤨!

Chop or shred the carrots. Freeze what you can’t use right away. Use for soups or salads or fried rice. Beef and broccoli. Any Asian style meals. Add to spaghetti sauce especially homemade sauce. I have a good recipe for carrot bread which freezes well.

Your apples, carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, garlic, ginger, most root vegetables will store for months without refrigeration. So if you can get a whole box I’d go for it. You do have to check them regularly, and remove anything that is starting to turn, because 1 bad apple spoils the bunch.

You could cook the lamb in the ceockpot, takenwhat meat off that you can, and then make a true shepherds pie?

    • @TheLifeOfAliInAustralia
      @TheLifeOfAliInAustralia 4 місяці тому

Noooo!! (Sorry, I'm not meaning to be rude at all xx )That's the most expensive cut of lamb (equivalent to prime rib/eye/scotch fillet steak)!! It needs a quick roast to medium, medium well at max, rested, and then sliced as 'chops' and served as a full roast meal!! Leftover meat and veg are diced very fine, mixed with leftover gravy, then add mash to make true shepherd's pie!!
If you ever told an Aussie, New Zealander or British person you threw a rack in the crockpot they would have a heart attack!! Lamb loin is the next most expensive and quick pan fried to med/ med well max. Any other cut needs to be slow braised, although 4 quarter chops can be seasoned and barbecued (your equivalent would be a grill like you would put steak on). In Australia they are often done in summer, with sausages, beef patties, onions, maybe prawns and salads such as coleslaw and potato salad, plenty of buttered white bread and tomato sauce.
Lamb is the traditional Australia day food which is in summer, and 'chuck a lamb chop on the barbie' has been our slogan for a very long time 😀

It completely depends on the food bank in question. Some have no requirements, some only require you live in the county it serves, some require proof of income. You have to contact each pantry to find out what they require.

I don't think there's anything wrong with you feeding your chickens the lentils. If you know it's something that your family wouldn't like and at least something else is eating it and then turn the chickens are going to give you eggs at least something is eating them instead of them going to waste.❤ you have to do what you think is best for your family and their needs.😅
