I think I might do some modern modification to this pair with the welder and grinder to make this pair better but the next set I forge I will definitely do a little different. Thanks!

Great sense of humor, you had me laughing with the opening lines!!! Good forging, and discussion. Your first test flight of the floppy Jaw looked and worked well. Looking forward to your next post!

I like it Jayce, seems to work pretty darn good. Not easy holding a short taper like that. Might have to give that a try, one of those tools you don't think you need til you have one! Have a good week and happy horseshoeing!

..Tapers are hard to hold on to. Like a toddler going down the candy or cereal aisle at WallyMart. You are on the right track, less floppy. Nice build on them...!

Good video on the build and after mod. I've an old set at the historical forge and several folks like them.

That's cool, I've never seen a set in person, just in pictures.

Fantastic idea for tongs, i use v bit or bolt jaw to hold tapers mostly, they keep working there way out when tapering. Will give these tongs a go when i get time to make them.

Ya I think with less movement in the floppy jaw they'd work great!

Nice idea and execution. Seems to work pretty well. My thoughts, if the the swivel part had a flat or slight 'V' for the gripping surface it would hold better and a bit less movement like you said. Now I already know what my thoughts are worth. I to have friends and neighbors with the same problem.

I thought about the V part but photos I've seen of old ones didn't have it so I wanted to try it without first, and I can always add that later.

I also think that just being flat it would help. Nice tongs for the tapers for sure.@@FarmsteadForge

What was that weird punch at 6:30 for?

That's for a fixed rivet style tong, it keeps the rivet seated so the opposite rein can flow around it so there isn't uneven wear. All farrier tools are made that way. I talk more about it in some of my other tong tutorial videos.

I think if your going to hold something on the diagonal you should put a "V" groove in the moveable jaw. A stop works well that is what I have on my flat jaw moveable jaw tongs.
I copied mine years ago from an old cast iron pair patented in the 1860's. They were labeled "universal" tongs cast in the reins.

Good to know, the only ones I've ever seen has just been pictures that were very similar to this set. Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it.
