  • In this video i am forging quarter inch flat bit blacksmith tongs from 5/8 mild steel round bar. These tongs will be given away and the winner will be announced next week.

    this was a well made video. I must however,for those new to the craft who may read these comments, point out some fundamental flaws in these tongs. Firstly your "bolster" as you call it , which is actually the boss of your tongs, ended up far too thin, especially given your starting stock being 5/8" bar. this will result in a weak boss prone to breakage. secondly, your bits are dissimilar when making a "set" of tongs the idea is to make as close to a perfectly matched set as possible. having jaws this different results in reduced grip effectiveness. Now I understand that i have come to this video far in the future from it's filming and I am certain that your skill level has increased since then. I would love to see you make another video of making the same type of tongs and show the improvement.

    Nice tongs do you end up tidying the reins up a bit more? i.e round them off more and smooth them out?

      i keep them flat with soft edges but thats just a personal preference
