FIRST LOOK! Ford C900 Refuse Garbage Truck Garwood Load Packer 1/25 Scale Model Kit Review AMT 1247 AMT1247/12 AMT1247
The Garwood Load Packer was one of the first vehicles to utilize a compactor, increasing the truck's hauling capacity and reducing the costs of larger payloads. The Packer was introduced in 1938, but significant numbers weren't manufactured until after World War II. By 1949, over 2500 of these trucks were in use across the US and Canada. Almost all waste collection vehicles today utilize some type of compaction mechanism.
Garwood Industries revolutionized the garbage collection industry with their Load Packer described here. Though it began in 1938, significant numbers weren't manufactured until after the War. By 1949, over 2500 of these trucks were in use in municipalities across the country. Let's have a closer look at this interesting truck.
A garbage truck is a truck specially designed to collect municipal solid waste and transport it to a solid waste treatment facility, such as a landfill, recycling center or transfer station. In Australia they are commonly called rubbish trucks, or garbage trucks, while in the U.K. dustbin lorry or bin lorry is commonly used. Other common names for this type of truck include trash truck in the United States, and refuse truck, dustcart, junk truck, bin wagon or bin van elsewhere. Technical names include waste collection vehicle and refuse collection vehicle (RCV). These trucks are a common sight in most urban areas.
Rear loaders have an opening into a trough or hopper at the rear that a waste collector can throw waste bags or empty the contents of bins into. Often in many areas they have a lifting mechanism to automatically empty large carts without the operator having to lift the waste by hand.[6]
Another popular system for the rear loader is a rear load container specially built to fit a groove in the truck. The truck will have a chain or cable system for upending the container. The waste will then slide into the hopper of the truck.
The modern rear loader usually compacts the waste using a hydraulically powered mechanism that employs a moving plate or shovel to scoop the waste out from the loading hopper and compress it against a moving wall. In most compactor designs, the plate has a pointed edge (hence giving it the industry standard name packer blade) which is designed to apply point pressure to the waste to break down bulky items in the hopper before being drawn into the main body of the truck.
Compactor designs have been many and varied, however the two most popular in use today are the "sweep and slide" system (first pioneered on the Leach 2R Packmaster), where the packer blade pivots on a moving carriage which slides back and forth in large tracks fabricated into the body sides, and the "swing link" system (such as the Dempster Routechief) where the blade literally swings on a "pendulum"-style mechanism consisting of links which control the arc of the blade's movement. The Geesink GPM series uses a pivoting packer blade which swings on an inverted U-shaped frame which lowers the blade into the hopper, where it sweeps the waste out; the frame then retracts back into the body to perform the compaction action. The Heil Colectomatic is a hybrid between the two philosophies- it used a combination of a lifting loading hopper and a pivoting sweeper blade to clear and compact waste in anticipation of the next load.
So-called "continuous" compactors were popular in the 1960s and 1970s. The German Shark design (later Rotopress) used a huge rotating drum fitted with spiral shaped paddles to draw waste in, and force it around an auger of decreasing pitch to compress it. SEMAT-Rey of France pioneered the rotating rake system (also used in the British Shelvoke and Drewry Revopak) to simultaneously shred and compress the waste as it is loaded. Other systems used a continuously rotating Archimedes' screw to draw in waste and mutilate it inside the body.

I like building these trucks, it takes me a mouth to build them the way I want them to come out. What I really like is watching folks like you teaching us your idea of how you like to build them, You teach people like me how to come up with new ideas about the way a truck that's been on the road or working may look after a trucker has put thousands of miles on them. Most of my trucks look like the ones you look at the show room. Thank you for all the work you do. Thats a fine looking trash truck you built there.

I was worried you might trash this model. But I threw out that thought about 30 seconds in. I've seen a lot of garbage on UA-cam, but this is as close to REAL as I'll see all day. Thanks again for a great build AND not for deleting my attempt at humor.

Great job, Chris. These C-series trucks were everywhere in their day. The refuse body is fine but the new chassis parts are excellent.
The original came with a van body or a stake-bed body for deliveries. I'd like to see the new utility parts with other bodies, like a single-axle dump truck for landscapers, or a water/fuel tank truck, or maybe even an industrial fire truck.
    Nicely done!

Would love to see someone come out with the truck kits without the frame and cab. I think they could sell the garbage compactor or dump box or flatbed or tilt bed or tow truck bed or reefer box all separately so we could add them to what ever truck body we want. I would love this kit on a 1990s Ford cab.

'Amazing kit and an impressive build, as always. Since you have the ear of Round 2, I wonder if you'd consider suggesting that they look into producing that magnificent 1/4 scale Chevrolet engine that was tooled up, back in the '60s, but never hit the market. I believe that the tooling and a few test shots are in the collection of the model car museum, in Salt Lake.'Just a thought. It'd be wonderful if this amazing kit could finally see the light of day.

Was looking forward to this build from the time you got this kit. I'm very impressed with all the working features. How long did it take to build that compactor body? Looks very labor intensive and I think it'd try my patience as a big tow truck once did! But it's definitely a great addition to any model truck collection and well worth the wait after all these years.

Excellent! You’ve given me numerous ideas!
Speaking of the Ford C-series medium-duty tilt-cab truck, I saw several photographs of fire trucks with this design as the cab. Would grafting this truck driver’s office to the body of the three AMT fire truck kits be reasonably accurate? That is, did these Ford tilt-cab vehicles have American LaFrance fire truck equipment? From what you’ve shared with us of your busy work life, you know more about this than I.
I just think it would look truly innovative (especially in a diorama incorporating all three in a two-alarm fire involving one end of an aging, red-brick apartment block). The model-maker might have to scratch-build certain details, but one reasonably would have to expect that.
Such a display also would include some a fire chief’s car, police patrol cars, a sheriff’s cruiser, an ambulance, etc.
You know, if you start now, you just might be finished in time for Christmas . . . .
