My father taught me the Ruy Lopez as my first chess opening, but he never allowed it as a black player, he always played the Philidor defense: he was one of his favorite players. He was a particular guy 😆

Philidor was placing grounds for positional chess, it was the period of Illuminism. In the XIX century romanticism was leading and his deep and wonderful lesson was forgotten until Steinitz. Really a genius, precursor of modern chess.

I don't know about "favorite player," but I'm familiar with his defense and his position. 😂
Also, how can you say his games weren't notable when he played against Unknown? Unknown has played some of the greatest players of all time. Sheesh.

GM Finegold says "your favorite player" sarcastically, because his audience is often so new that they don't know any chess players (maybe Magnus Carlsen and Garry Kasparov and Bobby Fischer -- the types that laymen might know as trivia).

I've been watching Ben's content since 2018, when he was the Grandmaster in Residence at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis, before he moved to Georgia and opened the one in Atlanta. Back when the only people that had more than a handful of chess videos were Finegold, Rosen a d Schrantz. Funny to think about now.
I'm very familiar with what he meant, mate. I was making a joke because there exist in chess both a Philidor Defense and a Philidor Position or Maneuver.
Everytime he posts a new video, I watch it and then try to make a funny comment, because Ben's sense of humor is very similar to mine.
      That's all, just a joke. 🤷‍♂️✌️

16:10 Ben, Rb4 allows Rc7. You have to keep your rook on the 7th until you can move it to the 4th with tempo. If the Black king is on c8 instead of d8 and the Black rook is on c3 instead of c2, then Rb4 is the right move. For those who are interested and want to know why, the point is white is threatening Be6+, so black has to play either Rd3 to pin the bishop or Kd8 to meet Be6 (no longer a check) with Rd3+.
After Rd3, White a backrank trick: Rh4 Kb8 Ra4! and mate is inevitable.
After Kd8, we see why the Black rook had to be on c3 and the White rook had to go to b4: Bc4! Kc8, Be6+ with mate to follow.

Yeah. I'll click this. Learn about Philidor. Guy's got a defense named after him. Probably a pretty good player.
Gotta have something on while I do the dishes.

"Now remember, if you're playing someone, you know like Dzhugashvili, they're probably good at chess. If you're playing George Smith **rubs hands together** then you're all set. If your name's George Smith, sorry man you're not 2400 what can I tell you." - B. Finegold

I drew a game with the Philidor once. The other player didn't know it. I very much enjoyed that feeling of smugness.
