The K6 can be assembled in two ways: by default it comes preassembled in the "use screwdriver" mode: there's the rubber ring/gasket on the lid and the handle comes off alone (the lid stays in place). However there's a smaller rubber ring that comes with the K6, that helps attach the lid to the handle (the big ring should then be removed). In this mode the handle comes off together with the lid, like in most other grinders.
Just found your video because a friend of mine is looking for a hand grinder and I was interested in what's available since I bought mine. I'm using the KinGrinder K6, and you've missed something when you say the handle comes off really easily. The manual states that you should remove the silicone ring on the cover and attach the cover to the handle using the included smaller ring if you're hand grinding. This helps it to stay on since you can't rock the handle as much when the cover is attached to it. (Like the Comandante but more stable.) As you said, the way it comes from the factory (i.e. the way you were using it) is for when you're using a power drill to drive it. Imo, in terms of value for money it takes the cake. External adjustment, decently large capacity, very solid handfeel. And I really dislike magnetic catch cups so it's basically perfect for me. Edit 2: Oh, also I like the way they did the adjustment dial with the vertical/horizontal scales. The Lido looks amazing though, if I were to even think about an addition or upgrade it would be the one I'd consider. Thanks for your effort. Edit: Am I at the level that I could distinguish between the K-plus and the K6? Most likely not, so I'm just gonna be satisfied with what I have. :)
Cool beans. I got myself a K-Max last week. Nice to have my choice validated. Also, as a blind coffee drinker, it’s a very accessible grinder. The tactile feedback with the clicks is great and being able to always get to zero is crucial. I was too lazy to try to figure out how to calibrate it, so I had my sighted wife do it for me. I initially gotten the GX pro, but had to return it as it was no way for me to find the zero or otherwise set any particular grind setting.
Oh for sure. What an absolutely interesting perspective! I really appreciate this. I, and other youtubers, should really take into account other capable viewers when critiquing equipment. Thank you so much for sharing. And wonderful grinder!
@@LanceHedrick Yes, haven’t used my Virtuoso once since I got it. I want to eventually try my hand at espresso, but from everything I read, the virtuoso wasn’t going to cut it. A lot of the higher end grinders started including features that I wasn’t going to be able to use and figured why pay for stuff that I couldn’t access like built in timers and scales… touchscreens and capacitive buttons are the bane of visually impaired/blind people‘s existence. Often, the more retro/old fashion the better. I.E. hello! Hand grinder. Now I’ll have to figure out what type of espresso machine would be most accessible. I’m leaning towards something manual as opposed to semi automatic or automatic. Again, those awful touchscreens and capacitive buttons. But hey! I found a good grinder, I have a smart scale that can weigh to the 10th of a gram and a timer on my iPhone. I’m getting there. Ever try working and espresso machine blindfolded? Any sughestions?
@@cristobalmunoz5756 most e61 group head machines are pretty tactile, despite being “semi auto”. The only downside is the group head itself tends to get very hot, so navigating around that may be a challenge. Some dual boiler machines are also quite tactile with clicks buttons and switches, but have the brewhead housed away, making it harder to burn yourself - I’m thinking of the Lelit Elizabeth and rancilio silvia pro - you can have a sighted person set the PID temperature for you once and you shouldn’t need to touch it again.. all the rest of the operations are quite tactile.
@@LanceHedrick Appreciate the feedback. I’ll probably have to figure some sort of workaround for the pressure gauge since I’m not aware of any sort of accessible one other than a talking tire pressure gauge which I’m not sure if that math converts. Other than that, I’m sure like most things, with time and repetition, you eventually get a feel for something. I’ve also read up on the Cafelat Robot, but I’ll check out the Flair. Again, thanks.
I guess I’m insane lol. I really appreciate the fact that you seem so unbiased even after receiving these grinders from friends and companies or even knowing there is a whole die hard fan base community around one of them. Anyways this was amazing, fantastic job as always!
Great video! A few notes from an OE Lido user of a couple years: I feel like the size actually makes it really nice to use in a home setting. I brace the bottom of the grinder against the counter or my body rather than holding the entire thing suspended in the air. I believe Doug and Barb may have a video on this technique. Also, I used to grind 50-70g for a coffee pot every morning. Took about 2 minutes. Would be great if noise is a big issue for you. I have the Lido E, and my main complaint has been the adjustment mechanism, which is improved in the OG at the expense of the loading mechanism. If you're using it for espresso mostly, I'd probably take that trade and get the OG. If you're making a lot of auto-drip or chemex, I'd probably get the E or ET.
Just bought a 1Zpresso X-Pro (yeah that's new) and I really, really love. It has the external adjustment system, 40mm heptagonal burrs (similar to the Q2) with 12.5 microns per click and costs only 150€/$. It is crazy how much value you get out of it. Compared to the K Max (300$), it falls only short on grinding time and capacity, when talking about specs. I recommend looking into it, if you don't want to spend 250+ $/€.
Lance, your timing is impeccable. I was just wondering which hand grinder I should obsessively window shop for and never buy and this really narrowed it down 😎
“I like the way they dribble up and down the court…” this was the best throwback ever that came at an absolute surprise! What a treat. Solid video Lance!
Thanks for the video lance, to answer your question I routinely brew 50-60g of coffee for me and my partner in our french press or when I make cold brew, but having to do that in multiple phases doesn't bother me at all. I'd much prefer a smaller footprint, good burrs, and a relatively quick grind speed over how large the hopper or catcher are.
Wow, what an honor for 1zpresso to have Lance select the K Plus as the best overall hand grinder! I have the JE Plus and before opting for this model, I deliberated over the J and K series for a long time. It seems the JE Plus is not as popular as the K series, as the former is not as versatile (the makers suggest JE Plus is more suited for espresso). However, I recently compared brewing aeropress with the JE Plus vs Timemore Chestnut C2. The coffee with JE Plus had a lot more flavor, more depth, and was nuttier. I don't think you can go wrong with any 1zpresso hand grinder.
Thanks for going to the effort of doing this. I got a 1ZPresso whilst waiting for my electric grinder for espresso. Hard work on some beans, but gets the job done. Sure made me appreciate my electric grinder when it arrived. I am intending to learn pour-over later (mostly for travel), but for now I am enjoying refining my already wonderful foamy lattes with a Flair58.
Great great comparison with a good broad selection of serious hand grinders. Well done, Lance! I recently replaced my 1Zpresso Jx with a K-max. It's a fantastic piece of kit! Built like a tank, easy to use, easy to disassemble and reassemble and easy to adjust. I'm happy that it also compares favourably to all those other high end grinders.
I got the K Plus over 6 months ago and I always felt it has been an extremely underrated grinder. After watching this video I feel like I made a good choice getting it. Awesome video as usual
I love my Kinu but one tip for others with Big hands the thumb stop is more comfortable when held in the outmost joint on the index finger. Great video lance I think we will see more hand grinders with dual burrs in the future if done right it could be the best thing ever
I guess I’m insane. I really enjoy your content. I’m quite glad you are on UA-cam with your passion. I’ve been devouring your videos. I wish you continued success!
FYI - The Normcore does have a magnet inside but in some instances the magnet it upside down so you need to get something in there to pull it out. I have the grinder and there are no issues with it falling off at all
Nice! Regardless, the out of box experience for me was as shown in the video. I don't think the onus should be on the consumer to locate and fidget with something like that, you know? Even still, the rest of the experience was sub par. Good for its price? Sure. But not as impressive as I've heard people make it out to be.
For you all insane nerdy people like me, k series have an increase/decrease in particle size of ~9.68um per click (yep, I'm talking about particle size, not burrs gap) Burrs gap is 22.5um for K series. And from my tests, Comandante C40 translates to the K series at 1:3.1 ratio I.e. 30 clicks on Comandante translates to K series as 30x3.1 = 93 clicks (number 9 and 3 clicks) Comandante particle size change is 30um per click (default mechanism) Even at equivalent settings, I find the C40 producing a more acidic cup. K is tastier, more neutral and balanced overall, presenting acidity & sweetness in a better way. 1Zpresso is literally knocking the ball out of the park with the K series. Awesome hardware 👍
This guy knows his stuff and I really trust his opinion, only watched him when researching a new potential product, but you can quickly tell that he is passionate about coffee.
Great video! I have an 1zpresso JX-Pro (used to use a Porlex mini and, of course, the difference is huge). I use it for both espresso and filter coffee and even if I know the burrs are worse than the K series and more focused on filter instead of espresso, I think it is an incredible grinder for its price.
I have the jmax, ergonomicly similar to the kplus and it's a joy to use vs other grinders. 8.8um a click which is amazing and super easy to set. It doesn't have the K series burr set it has the JE burr set meant for espresso (which is what I use it for).
It is definitely geared towards espresso. Pourovers are OK with it, but k series I think do both better. J is more similar to espresso from a kinu. Great grinder! Need to do a full 1zpresso video. They're so good.
"I'm insane." Yup, I watched the entire thing (in one sitting). Thanks for that! What I like about the OG is that it's calibrated and produces grinds based on MICRONS. It drives me nuts that the coffee world is still using subjective terms (fine, med-fine, coarse) and proprietary "clicks". We ought to be able to provide micron ranges for various types of coffees. Yes, there's uneven grind size, especially in lower-end grinders and there are varying amounts of fines and chaff, but we ought to be able to have a standard measurement. Oh, wait, that would be MICRONS.
I absolutely agree with this. The industry using words like "medium" is driving me nuts, this is so subjective. I am sure medium to me does not look like medium to someone else. 1. Can anyone explain to me how the Lido OG is different from say a 1zpresso K series (I own a k series) from a "grinding in terms of microns" point of view? From the video, other than the clicks being labeled in micros there does not sound like a big difference in terms of measuring/grinding in microns. It is my understanding that the conical burr for most hand grinders moves up or down when you change the setting. This sounds the same as the Lido OG to me. Assuming both are calibrated at 0 with the burrs touching. The OG would be 1125 microns when the k-series is 50 clicks (22.5 microns * 50). 2. What is the burr gap Lance mentioned? I am thinking when calibrating the grinder if I have both burrs touching that would be 0 microns.
So, most companies assume perfect alignment when discussing micron movement. "Burr gap" assumes said perfection. But, none are perfect and few, even if aligned down to .o2mm from the factory, don't keep alignment after being cleaned. So, the measurement is one given to cover the burr gap, but since alignment is an issue, saying 30micron burr gap is wrong because likely one side is a bit more and one a bit less. This makes boulders out of one side more prevalent and fines out the other. Measuring vertical movement is more objective because you aren't assuming alignment. Just measuring the literal movement along an axis.
@@LanceHedrick Where I am coming from is don't that all grinders measure in terms of vertical movement 1 way or another. eg. Lido OG = 1125 microns K-series = 50 * 22.5 microns = 1125 microns C40 = 75 clicks (with red clicks) * 15 microns = 1125 microns Burr gap would exist in the Lido OG as well isn't it? Unless it comes from factory calibrated based on the microns adjustments and accounting for the burr gap. But the burr gap be misaligned if you took it apart for cleaning? So effectively after you have zeroed all grinders, the micron would really be: said vertical movement + burr gap (whatever that may be)? I looked on google but couldn't find much discussion on burr gap on hand grinders so pardon the many questions. Might be something I am not understanding correct. Thank you for the great information and you definitely earned a place on patron. Cheers.
Hey! I understand the confusion. So, the burr is fixed on the axel on the Lido and the collar doesn't move. So, they are aligned even after deconstruction. The others are rough guesses of movement based on aperture and thread pitch. You know what would be easier than typing this out? (Not to sound curt- it is 5am here and I still haven't slept haha!) Orphan espresso has a video discussing this. Will post in follow up comment
FWIW on the Kinu, the anti-slip 'nose' piece is much more comfortable if you wrap your index finger round it rather than letting it dig into your thumb. Also you mentioned it had one of the best burr alignments but with mine at least, the burr is slightly lose on the shaft which I fixed with one layer of Cellotape wrapped round the shaft. One layer of Cellotape is around 30 microns! 🤷♂️
I use the kingrinder k6. Thing is just robust for what you pay. One con is the rubber grip gets loose in about a couple of months. Mine gets used around 2-3 times a day and nothing is still rattling after dropping it a couple of times. Feels like it will last forever. The k series is the better overall grinder if you want to spend more.
In the UK the Comandante is not that pricy, ilovekplus sells it for £209 (around $250). I was hesitant to order from them since they are not listed on Comandante’s official site as an official dealer but I asked Comandante and they confirmed that they are official resellers, it’s just that the list is not updated often.
@@benedekvali1398 Right on. Commandante should take action to add them to their list, then. It's a nice price for the unit. But as Lance said, if they don't change the design, it will soon be more of a coffee lover's collector's item than a real contender in the hand grinder space. (There's actually a new Commandante Trailmaster coming out, but that's more geared towards camping.)
incredibly helpful and exhaustive. Thanks for shining some light in this huge, dark, confusing cave. Don't apologize for the length! The subject demanded it.
For what it's worth, my Normcore hand grinder DOES have a magnet on top. I got the Ti coated burrs and I ordered online. I've owned for 7 months and have yet to incidentally remove during grinding. Works well for me and my needs as a daily driver. Bummer yours does not have it, as I know you're also a huge fan of magnets!
That is great news! Absolutely fantastic. As you saw in the video, the top on mine is LOOSE. Haha So happy you've got a grinder you enjoy! That's what it is about
@@LanceHedrick hah! I didn’t even realize until this comment my Normcore v2 (also the Ti burr version FWIW) has a magnet in the top too. No wonder my lid doesn’t fall off either 😆
Gonna chime as another guy with the NCV2 Ti burrs and having yet to remove the top while grinding😁 I also think my knob moves nicely with no issues either 😂 Fantastic video as always tho! 👏👏👏
Wonderful! That is great. Always happy to be proven wrong when I say something negative. I try to review things as I find them but love hearing people who enjoy what they have! Thanks for commenting.
There are two gaskets that come with the Kingrinder. The black one that keeps the cap on is used for a power drill. There is a white smaller one that you put on, instead of the black one, to keep the plastic cap attached to the handle when not using the power drill.
I got mine from aliexpress. I'm not sure I had that come with it. The grinder arrived in less than appealing packaging with Like nothing inside lol. Should've gotten it from Prima
@@LanceHedrick I confirm that you were suppose to get a small white gasket to hold the handle on the cap/cover 😉 ! In fact, I found easier on workflow to feed the grinder with beans to get rid of the black gasket around the plastic-cover and to fix the handle to the cover with the white gasket. The handle attached to the cover remain in place fairly strong enough without the black gasket and it made much easier and quicker to remove the cover/lid without the black gasket by just lifting the handle to add beans to the grinder (I never had issue with the handle slipping off the chaff without the black gasket around the lid). For the price paid for the K6, for me it's the best value and a bang for the bucks 🙃
I also got from alixpress and it came with the white gasket that holds the cap firmly in place. Actually, I left both of them, white and black, since it’s very secure. For the price, it’s unbeatable.
K Plus is really wonderful and really a real all rounder. Espressos have nice clarity and body. Poirover is great. Funny sometimes I make lattes on niche zero and one with K plus and have people blind test (who don’t drink SOE, pourovers) and they pick the K Plus all the time!
Didn't even realize it was an hour long, I just went along ! I guess I'm crazy lol Loved your in depth dive in all of these and I totally agree with wanting an external clicks adjustments with guides to know what you do and where you're at (especially if you go away for a few days, then in your return you have to try and remember what was the last thing you brewed, it's just silly) I went with the Rok GC grinder last September and I like it for its countertop vertical motion design, but the adjustment wheel drives me mad and, in my experience, it does produces a lot of fines (light roasts can completely stall, medium and dark can be ok though, I use both your high extraction and less stalling techniques for v60). For the adjustment wheel, I wish they'd have done at least like the date on watches, just a little window and you see a number but oh well. It would still be analogue og style and at least you would know what's going on. But even with that, the tactile feedback is kinda soft and sometimes it freewheels, which, with no markings, really makes you go -____- As always, thanks for the content and cheers !
After using the Kingrinder K6 just a few times, I REALLY appreciate the number system. It's SO easy to adjust and remember what setting you used for what coffee. For instance... with an Ethiopian coffee I enjoy, 1-46 for espresso. 2-46 for filter. Such a pleasure to work with. The 3 grinders I had before are not so easy to work with, nor have the level of adjustment the K6 does. They got something going on over there. Just a thought... maybe you could make your own system of markings on your current grinder to give it some sort of repeatability. Get those creative juices flowing. Maybe think on it over nice cup of freshly roasted coffee... 🤔
Thanks for the review Lance, very enjoyable to watch. I've used the Kinu M47 Simplicity for over two years now and can attest to the quality of espresso and filter. I use my Turin more often just because of the functionality but am always tempted to go back to the Kinu, particularly because of the body and sweetness it provides.
With the Commandante, setting 25 corresponds to the 'C' on the underside of the grinder so counting down or up from that makes it super easy to use. Generally I'm between settings 15 to 26 which covers aeropress to french press. Hope that helps.
Interesting! My grinding experience with the C40 is quite different. I usually pick light to mid roasted beans and dial in a range between 8 and 13 clicks for Aeropress with 22g/300ml to 30g/500ml ratios, and between 13 and 18 clicks for french press with 28g/300ml to 40g/500g ratios, depending on the intensity desired or if I might share a cup with somebody. What's your preferred roast and typical use case?
Awesome video! Really helps clear out some of the preconceptions the community has around some of the more popular hand grinders. Seems like the market has evolved quite a bit and the Comandante, while still great, is facing much tougher competition.
Exactly. Succinct way to put it. They need to continue innovating, perhaps with an even more intense drive shaft. I'm so impressed by the construction of the Lido. For instance. Others need to step it up to stay relevant. Good news for comandante is they have a die hard community. But if they don't go to external adjustments... yikes haha
Looking good Lance! Thanks for the video, what a monster! Got my c40 for 230€ here. Main reason was the clicks everyone talks in. It's very easy to Google your coffee and someone has already posted results with a c40, and a v60 with Japan paper. Love the convenience! Although im at 24 clicks more often than not!
I’m insane lol. I own the Knock Feldgrind that I dialed in for my Flair 58 and got a Comadante MK4 for my filter. I chose the MK4 simply because of the wide community support and recipes out there in comparison to other grinders.
I own the Comandante mk4 for filter and flair 58. But I was thinking on getting the felgrind 47 for the flair. Do you still use it for espresso? How does it compare to the comandante?
Lance, thanks for the video. Great to hear your thoughts on all these. I'm wondering if you could comment on a few things: 1. What have you generally found in terms of the amount of beans it takes to season a new grinder, say for something like the K-plus? 2. Does grinder to grinder variability have much of an impact on cup quality? I'm wondering what the setting is on your K-plus (when properly calibrated) before you hear the burrs starting to rub (e.g. 0.5, 0.3, 0.8?)? Comparing with other K-plus owners that should give a good idea of how alignment (and grind distribution) is from unit to unit. 3. It would be great if you would create some short videos sharing some recipes made with your favorite couple of grinders. It might be a good starting point to get a "community" going for these other grinders, like exists with the Comandante. Cheers
These questions are too good to just skim over. Would you mind shooting them over to me via email? I might need to figure out a way to publicly answer these. Or do a youtube live or something.
I’ve got the 1Zpresso JE-Plus, which I think has a similar Italmill burr to the Kinu M47. I love the grinder for espresso and it can make good pour over (perhaps similar to the Kinu). Loved the long video, I must be insane like all the other commenters.
Yeah! Correct. I will say, the kinu is just a bit better out of factory because they have a bit tighter tolerances. I have noticed it does espresso marginally better and the filter is a decent amount better from it. But nothing major!
Big problem is to rember how many turns it was on my Kinu... So now a useing a digital tire tread depth gauge, and every recipe have now grind seting in mm and it easy to return after cleaning. Thanks great UA-cam channel...Now you need to explore ibrik/cezve...Take care!!
Hey Lance, I'm curious if you've tried the Knock grinders. I recently got the aergrind and absolutely love the small size for travel. I think papa Hoff had it in his original video, but it's been upgraded a bit since then.
I was about to ask the same question. I love the Aegrind's way of setting grind size, stepless with numbers visible on the top lid, so Lance would probably love that too. It's a bit unfortunate that the latest version is significantly more expensive (149£ now), but it could still be part of this review. Maybe it's a matter of availability? I'm not sure Knock have many distributors.
Lance already replied to a similar question here: ua-cam.com/channels/R2_8uHyWcTSV6iIw6BN4rg.htmlcommunity?lc=UgxWifmjRIl-T-0bJ354AaABAg.9cHX6fnJGXZ9cHXkFdnC4_&lb=Ugkxocmc_xJIRMusItNzPPt69uyBEEna5EWJ So in essence, not popular enough to spend the extra time!
Good news. THe cried of the people have already made their way to Knock. They are sending me a 47! Once i receive, Give Me like a month to test thoroughly
Thanks Lance. Love this video. I purchased a K Plus a few months back after doing loads of internet research. So it’s very pleasing to see you give it the big thumbs up 😀. Initially I was using it for espresso and Americano (ie diluted espresso). I recently tried it for filter and was blown away by the clarity and sweetness, much better than the americano I had been drinking. Do you mind sharing what grind settings you were using for espresso and filter on the K Plus? Just curious.
@@tubacorbin On my K+ I use between 2.5-3.5 for espresso, 4-5 for aeropress and flat bottom pourovers, 5-6 for V60/hario switch/chemex, and 6-8 for large shared chemex brews and french press. I never find myself having to go past a full rotation so it’s easy to keep track of where you are, and I also find myself grinding quite a bit finer than the recommendations in the 1zpresso instructions.
@@benf340 Thank you for this! For the longest time, I hung around 6.5-7.5 for Kono and Origami (12/200 recipe) because that's the range I saw Rogue Wave using. The last week or so I dropped down to around 6 and it's been much better and more consistent for me. I think I might be able to push even finer it seems.
I have Lido OG, C40, and Ezpresso K-Pro. When pouring over, I personally like Lido OG the most. It offers a bit more flavors than the others. To me, C40 is a little bit too "clean", so it increases the "tea" taste I feel. And the K-pro is like in the middle of these two. All of them are good grinders, it always fun to try to use these devices on the same coffee bean and taste the possibilities.
That one hour whizzed by because of this amazing coffee content. Great work as always sir Lance. Looks like the K6 actually wins this showdown considering how you complimented it for both espresso and filter, also its adjustment system, in that price point. Its almost the same price point as the 1zpresso Jx pro, maybe a head to head would be epic? or maybe Kingrinder vs 1zpresso lineup cause I know they have similar burr geometries on their lineup.
@@MatteoSorba 1Z is better. Absolutely no doubt. The same factory can produce similar products, still not equal. Take a look at both and you'll notice a difference. Not night and day maybe, but a difference. In the cup, blind test, i was able to pick my kpro over any KG everytime.
At this time, I have almost zero interest in hand grinders but the sheer amount of effort, time, and passion invested into this video is undeniably admirable. I have a bit of an idea on what it takes, and so *I'm here to watch and support* ! And shoo the haters away! 🏓 (pretend that is a fly swatter)
Awesome job lance! Loved this video. Would love to hear your thoughts on a few cheaper grinders if you ever have the energy to do another one of these haha. Would love to hear more about the 1zpresso q2 with the heptagonal burrs because I've hear it described as the budget comandante several times. Also the kingrinder k2 and the 1z presso jx have very similar Burr sets to the kinu (pentagonal 47mm) and I've been really happy with my k2 so far. It would also be nice to just hear your thoughts on the original timemore burrs paired up next to these since they are all in the $100 range. I think it would make a nice budget grinder video. Another thing people often don't take into account is wholesale. Kingrinder and timemore wholesale directly to shops and roasters making it very approachable for them to get these grinders into customers hands and I think that aspect is really important. Lastly I wanted to end saying I have a kingrinder K6 and I actually thought it was too similar to tell the difference from my comandante. I'm wondering if they possibly have an alignment issue and that is due to them saying you can use a drill on it haha. Anyways just wanted to say thanks again for another Great video and looking forward to more soon!
Real quick- I think it goes K series>c40>k6. The k6 and c40 are closer imo than k plus and k6. All are great, tho, and I doubt most would perceive a difference. And yes. I need a reset period on manual grinders but do plan on doing a budget video! I want to do it justice so it'll Likely be 6 months
@@LanceHedrick using the above ranking, if im going to only be using this 50 times a year (something like once a week) and use electric for espresso anyway, so just like a weekly pour over or 2, does the K6 make the most sense given the price? so like, it's definitely a good grinder, it might not be the best compared to K series or C40, but if i'm only using it once a week, then does it come close enough that the value is really there. idk if that make sense lol
I appreciate the time and effort that’s gone into this and I also appreciate that an exhaustive hand grinder review will never be possible due to new models appearing all the time, but there are too many missing from this video in my opinion and I’d love to see an ‘episode 2’. Suggestions for grinders to include would be - Hiku, Arco, VSSL, Apollo, Lido 3, Flair Royal, Timemore C2 (as a representative of all the similar budget grinders), Mazzer …… there’s quite a list.
Just few days ago I started looking for a hand grinder and thought "would be nice if Lance Hedrick had a video about them"! Great timing, thanks a lot!
I thought you were super biased towards breville when I saw your toaster, but your kitchen aid blender saved the day. Faith in your objectivity has been restored.
Hey, Lance. Thanks for the video! The kingrinder k6 also come with a little white rubber, that hold together the lid and the crank, like every other grinder. Maybe they forgot to include in this unit?
I'm insane thanks. I've been thinking about upgrading my grinder and was definitely looking at the Kplus so it confirms my thoughts. Just one question I have is how do you think it compares to a flat burr grinder for pourovers? I guess it's still a different class in terms of clarity? Thanks a lot for these crazy reviews, you're helping a lot of people out there!
I’m also curious, how does a grinder like the commandante compare to a flat burr grinder? Would Ode with SSP be an upgrade? What electric grinder would you need to purchase to see a noticeable upgrade for filter coffee particularly?
Hey Lance! I'm excited to watch this video. I had stepped away from "coffee content" due to being unable to brew for 2 months, I'm starting with this one! Yay for in-depth reviews!
The KinGrinder comes with a small band to attach the handle to the lid. In your showcase, that is missing and the reason the handle is coming off. I have the K6 for Flair 58 and enjoy it!
30:43 If you want to go cheap for the Comandante Red Click system, just buy the 2 (!) necessary parts separately as spare parts. All you need is the 'Red Clix' grind adjuster and the 'RX35' axis with the fine thread. Yes, only two pieces at half price, absolutely same thing
I'm glad you confirmed my thoughts on the 1zpresso K-Max! I love the combination of cup quality with fantastic build and ergonomics (especially the external adjustment and magnetic catch cup).
There is something up with the K plus burrs. Not all of the versions of the grinder seem to have the same one. In this video, it looks identical to the one that is in the K max. However, online and in other videos, the burr appears different, with less metal at the base. This may explain some of the discrepancy between reviewers (obviously taste is also subjective). I am not sure if this burr change is something that is exclusive to the dark iron grey model of the grinder that Lance has and NOT present in the brown/grey regular versions, or whether it is a change carried forward across all of the colours. This is a serious frustration with 1zpresso. It is never clear what you are truly buying because they silently make small changes to their product lines which could affect the flavour profile. When you buy a comandante, you know 100% what you are getting and are assured that the burrs are identical to the reviews and information you have based your decision on. With 1zpresso, you never quite know if you are getting revision 2 or revision 4, and whether it is the exact same as what you read about online.
I didn't realize they were so expensive. I just bought one in Istanbul that I guess is a standard hand grinder in Turkey. It's ornate, beautiful, and it cost less than $10.
It's amazing to see how much variety has come on the hand grinder front in the last few years. I bought my aergrind back when you basically had just Knock, OE or Hario to choose from (obvious exageration), very happy with the grinder and it's not going anywhere, but I'd probably buy something different if I had to make a choice today... maybe
I'm so excited to watch this video! I own the Kingrinder K6. It's extremely easy to dial in for espresso. I've had tons of enjoyment using this grinder. I haven't had any issues with the handle coming off while grinding with mine. In the beginning I had to remember to keep my grip hand off the upper part that adjusts the grind size, because it moves on me if I hold it while grinding. It's a non issue now. That happened like 2 times only and now I just know to hold lower instinctively.
I also have the kingrinder k6, there's the option of having the cover be a part of the handle vs having it seated on the top of the grinder. that also means that the cover moves along the rotation of the handle while grinding.
@@RyanTanganco yes. Mine has that too. I don't use it however, because I'm always taking it with me in the box it came in for protection. So I don't want to take it off and put it back on each time. I'm also really hoping to try out the electric drill on it, but don't have a drill at the moment.
I'm worried about the potential ill affect the drill could have. But I digress. I didn't know it was supposed to come with another o ring to situate the handle better.
@@LanceHedrick yes indeed. It's a very small, clear rubber/silicon o ring. A small rubber band would do the same thing. Even if you had to double wrap it, I think it would work fine.
Interesting. I really enjoy comadante regular click that use for pour overs, fr press, moka and Turkish coffee. I guess red click takes fun from nice clicking that feels really tactical
Another insane subscriber here. That was a huge effort - thank you! Hearing a good word from you about 1zpresso influenced me to buy the J-Max (I think it came out after the video was published). That was the best thing I did for my coffee enjoyment, and it pairs beautifully with my 2013 Breville Barista Expess. Haven't used the inbuilt grinder since, and my taste buds thank me every time I enjoy my coffee. I guess that Eureka will have to wait another ten years now 😂Thanks again!
You're videos are really stressing me out lately. I bought the DF64 and K-Plus literally days before your review. The possible buyers remorse from a bad Lance review is real. On topic: Great job on the review! Very thorough and nice in depth material on the burr geometry and taste.
A central part of the timemore hand grinder philosophy is being able to hold it well. They all either have knurling that prevents slip, or this cuboid shape. That combined with some of the nicer burrs would be awesome.
They crushed their central tenant. It is my favorite to hold. Give me that shape and feel, the drive shaft and alignment of the Lido, the burrs of the K plus, magnetic cup of the etz i, etc. And you've got an absolute UNIT
Love my c40 had it 6 months, I don't really have any issue with the click system and the quality of filter is just incredible. Build quality is exceptional as well. I know people with a Kinu, c40s and K-plus all great choices.
Sure thing! All personal. I think the filter on k plus is just a bit more enjoyable personally. And those I blind tested with me agreed. But it's all so subjective. And clicks- definitely person to person. I absolutely abhor clicks. Once you go external, I don't think you can go back hahaha!
@@LanceHedrick Can you tell us in which way you prefered k plus? Body, clarity, sweetness, acidity etc. How do the differ? I want to know what to expect :)
After watching this insane vidoe, I purchased a 1Zpresso K-pro(same burr set as K-plus) even though I've already had a C40. Keep going🔥🔥🔥🔥 My favourite coffee youtuber!🎉
The adjustment on the kingrinder K6 is just like how rifle scopes are adjusted. You need super fine adjustments which require multiple revolutions. It’s very clever to incorporate that into a grinder
Damn! One of the most in depth reviews I’ve ever seen!! Just insane, this content is incredible, well done Lance, your a true legend in the coffee game 👍🏻
Great job here. Only thing I'd say is for the kplus it actually has an open receiver with a quick release for the portafilter or just hassle free dosing into a pour over. So it's not just an open end. Also, it's the kmax that has the magnetic cup, not the pro.
@@LanceHedrick absolutely, I don't mean to pester you. I just put it there for others watch the video and reading the comments. But really, I've binged a good handful of your videos today and they are amazing!
Wanted to add… there’s a certain “zen of the bean” that I feel like you get with a hand grinder. Some people don’t know how different a dark roast “feels” compared to a light roast - those people have not used a hand grinder.
loved your review.......its clear your not an elitist when it comes to coffee...i also like you chose your own favorit and not what the masses think.i love my comandante....but your review in indepht...i apreciate that....hats off
Thank you for this review! I've always wondered what are the pros and cons for each, objectively. It takes me forever and I have not been able to commit to getting one but you have helped me narrow down the option. Love your commitment, honesty and detailed review.
Also i just upgraded my C40 to the polymer grounds cup. Another advantage is, that it creates static, and cathes all the chaff. Also it can be produced more accuratley than glass. Hence good for dosing again and again =) Also i learned about the black grind bar and bigger knob. As i own the c40 for quite some time now, i gave it the upgrade, and it feels absolutley wonderful with the longer handle and bigger knob. Also the black handle comes with a black plastic top, so no more finger prints.
Yeah! It does create static to remove chaff. But of these make a lot static, which is nice to remove chaff. And I love the big crank, but am not a fan of all the Nickle and diming. That handle and the red clix should be stock for the price imo
@@LanceHedrick yeah, ill go with you on this. the price is deinetley a heavy pill to swollow, for just stock. Got mine before the pandemic, so it was more in line then for what you get. Also, i guess as stated in your video, its in super high demand and its still a small volume production. so demand must be directly cupled with price at commandante =)
@20:34 I don't know if others pointed this out already, but the handle comes off because of a missing gasket. In the box, there should be a small gasket for the handle. If not, then your variant did not include one or it went missing.
Loved your video. Wish you had the Kinu Classic up. I know internally it’s the same grinder but I feel with the extra weight it’s easier to grind with. I absolutely love mine and I do have the pour-over burr, I do like it quite a bit more but it’s really not worth changing out the burrs all the time. So I leave the Pour-over burrs in and use my DF83 V2 for espresso. After a while I’ll switch it up, I’ll put the original burrs back in and use it for espresso and then use my DF83 for filter.
Thank you for covering the KINGrinder K6. I'd like to point out that Eight Ounce Coffee in Canada is a NA distributor for KINGrinder. I am concerned with the cheaper materials though. Makes me worried about the longevity of the grinder.
I didn't know they were! Awesome. They are a great company. And yeah. A little scary but so cheap you could buy two if needed and still ve cheaper than a c40 lol
@@LanceHedrick this may be a long shot, but do you think the savings you get from purchasing the K6 over the K plus is worth it, especially for someone who exclusively brews pourover/espressolike aeropress?
Hey! Would love a subscribe and like and share if you enjoy or appreciate the work I put in! So close to 100k. Would mean the world!
Already been subscribed for a good while!
Thank you! So close!
Can't believe I wasn't subscribed yet...I was already watching your videos. Subscribed! I am sure you will be there real soon, Lance!
Damn Lance, you won another Kinu then I guess :) you beat all the compition at the smart profiling again in Milano :) I got 77 points myself, cheers
Is there any aluminum in the Orphan Espresso Lido OG that will come into contact with the coffee? Also have you ever used the Malwani LIVI?
The K6 can be assembled in two ways: by default it comes preassembled in the "use screwdriver" mode: there's the rubber ring/gasket on the lid and the handle comes off alone (the lid stays in place). However there's a smaller rubber ring that comes with the K6, that helps attach the lid to the handle (the big ring should then be removed). In this mode the handle comes off together with the lid, like in most other grinders.
Yes. I've been informed with other comments. Mine did not come with this extra o ring.
The absolute madlad, must have doubled in arm muscle mass after this video

Hope he mixed arms for grinding. Might raise suspicions otherwise if one arms pumped and the other not 😁😛

Depends on price but a GREAT entry in the flair pro 2. Not too costly, easy to use, and a great community.
I love it! I'm insane, too. And after going after the niche community a week or so ago, I ain't scared of nothing! Haha
Thanks for the support!
Love the way you make your videos. Not a lot of BS, just your opinion unfiltered.
Great video! A few notes from an OE Lido user of a couple years:
I feel like the size actually makes it really nice to use in a home setting.
I recommend looking into it, if you don't want to spend 250+ $/€.
it might even make a better cup
Lance, your timing is impeccable. I was just wondering which hand grinder I should obsessively window shop for and never buy and this really narrowed it down 😎
I love when that happens! Hope this helps
That's really good to know! Thank you sincerely for sharing
Agreed. I have the K Plus and generally always use 35 or 60g and it's great to just switch hands and get a good workout.
I really appreciate when creators state if and how they purchased the things they review
Did I not do it in this video? Thought I did. Let me know and I'll tell you here and now!
Thank you for all of your videos, Lance. Between yours and James Hoffman's videos you both have helped me get better at my new job.
I'm happy that it also compares favourably to all those other high end grinders.
for what type of coffee brewing?
Such a comprehensive video. I watched it twice to make my decision. Best ever. I am officially Insane! Lance❤
I got the K Plus over 6 months ago and I always felt it has been an extremely underrated grinder.
After watching this video I feel like I made a good choice getting it.
Awesome video as usual
You should feel great. That grinder IS AWESOME
For you all insane nerdy people like me, k series have an increase/decrease in particle size of ~9.68um per click (yep, I'm talking about particle size, not burrs gap)
Burrs gap is 22.5um for K series.
And from my tests, Comandante C40 translates to the K series at 1:3.1 ratio
I.e. 30 clicks on Comandante translates to K series as 30x3.1 = 93 clicks (number 9 and 3 clicks)
Comandante particle size change is 30um per click (default mechanism)
Even at equivalent settings, I find the C40 producing a more acidic cup. K is tastier, more neutral and balanced overall, presenting acidity & sweetness in a better way.
1Zpresso is literally knocking the ball out of the park with the K series. Awesome hardware 👍
Amazing and underrated comment. Thanks for sharing the conversion and this information.
Agree :-)
Same here. That's why I went with it and at a lower price point ;)
How is it for pour overs?
It is definitely geared towards espresso. Pourovers are OK with it, but k series I think do both better. J is more similar to espresso from a kinu. Great grinder! Need to do a full 1zpresso video. They're so good.
@@LanceHedrick solid insight. That's why I went with the Jmax. I have the Ode SSP for pour overs and just wanted an excellent espresso only grinder.
Pedantry is most obviously welcomed here. Welcome home, Howie. Welcome home. Haha!
@@LanceHedrick Where I am coming from is don't that all grinders measure in terms of vertical movement 1 way or another.
eg. Lido OG = 1125 microns
K-series = 50 * 22.5 microns = 1125 microns
C40 = 75 clicks (with red clicks) * 15 microns = 1125 microns
Burr gap would exist in the Lido OG as well isn't it?
oh man, one hour of Lance talking? yes, please
Ha! Hope it doesn't get too cringe
That is a deal! I still can't stand the dial in system but hard price to pass up!
Commandante also has a list of sites NOT to purchase from - maybe you can find them there. ;-)
@@RasenRambo23 as I said I asked Comandante and they confirmed that they are official resellers. Obviously checked the not dealers list. (Edit: typo)

So happy you've got a grinder you enjoy! That's what it is about
@@LanceHedrick hah! I didn’t even realize until this comment my Normcore v2 (also the Ti burr version FWIW) has a magnet in the top too. No wonder my lid doesn’t fall off either 😆
Ah wow. I got a faulty unit
Gonna chime as another guy with the NCV2 Ti burrs and having yet to remove the top while grinding😁 I also think my knob moves nicely with no issues either 😂
Fantastic video as always tho! 👏👏👏
Wonderful! That is great. Always happy to be proven wrong when I say something negative. I try to review things as I find them but love hearing people who enjoy what they have! Thanks for commenting.
Super helpful, I keep coming back to this to help me narrow down a hand grinder for espresso! Excellent video.
I guess I'm crazy lol Loved your in depth dive in all of these and I totally agree with wanting an external clicks adjustments with guides to know what you do and where you're at (especially if you go away for a few days, then in your return you have to try and remember what was the last thing you brewed, it's just silly)
I went with the Rok GC grinder last September and I like it for its countertop vertical motion design, but the adjustment wheel drives me mad and, in my experience, it does produces a lot of fines (light roasts can completely stall, medium and dark can be ok though, I use both your high extraction and less stalling techniques for v60). For the adjustment wheel, I wish they'd have done at least like the date on watches, just a little window and you see a number but oh well. It would still be analogue og style and at least you would know what's going on. But even with that, the tactile feedback is kinda soft and sometimes it freewheels, which, with no markings, really makes you go -____-
As always, thanks for the content and cheers !
I also have the Rok and totally agree with your assessment and request for enhancements.
I have watched this video twice now and I just have to say that this is probably the best and most comprehensive review currently available on UA-cam.
Great job Lance! Thanks for the exhaustive work in putting this video together. Your insights are incredibly helpful.
Great video! Nevermind the length, the more informative and insightful, the better! Thank you
Thanks for the review Lance, very enjoyable to watch.
@@rc0va That would be way too fine on my C40 but I'd let your palate guide your grind setting.
I'm wondering if you could comment on a few things:
^^^ yes please
Lance already replied to a similar question here:
ua-cam.com/channels/R2_8uHyWcTSV6iIw6BN4rg.htmlcommunity?lc=UgxWifmjRIl-T-0bJ354AaABAg.9cHX6fnJGXZ9cHXkFdnC4_&lb=Ugkxocmc_xJIRMusItNzPPt69uyBEEna5EWJ
So in essence, not popular enough to spend the extra time!
The new version is very recent. Maybe distribution was tough still. I would also like to know how it stacks up!
Good news. THe cried of the people have already made their way to Knock. They are sending me a 47! Once i receive, Give Me like a month to test thoroughly
@@LanceHedrick awesome! I look forward to watching it!
This video is absolutely detailed. The information and comparison is very useful.
Would love to know some general settings for K-plus too! I use Kono, origami, and hario switch.
@@tubacorbin Cool!
@@benf340 interesting. I use 2.5 on K Plus for most espresso and 3.5 for tricolate pour over. Must give your grind settings a try.
Very interesting you find the C40 cleaner than k pro. I find them similar with a sweeter cup on the k.
I own a Kingrinder K4, which is v similar to a K6, and it's quite similar to a K-series 1zpresso grinder for a lot less price wise. Fully recommended.
1Zpresso build quality and flavor profile is still way ahead.
@@mprz8188 why you saying this? 1Z and Kingrinder was made by the same factory at 99%
@@MatteoSorba 1Z is better. Absolutely no doubt. The same factory can produce similar products, still not equal. Take a look at both and you'll notice a difference. Not night and day maybe, but a difference. In the cup, blind test, i was able to pick my kpro over any KG everytime.
@@mprz8188 ah interesting. Because at the glance, the burr seems identical (k6 and kplus)
I’m using the normcore for a while now. Never had the lid fly off in the middle of grinding.
Rest of the review is completely accurate.
Yeah I have one too and I was going to say the same, lid stays on and the knob spins fine on mine.
Thank you sooooo much for producing this incredibly in-depth and detailed video, Lance.
You totally rock! 🤘🏻
You have no idea how in-depth it is. It could be 56 minutes of Lance farting into the mic. You replied seconds after he posted it.
Thank you, as always!
That would be incredibly in depth. I mean, you'd be impressed, am I wrong? Lol
@@LanceHedrick it would certainly be a fascinating feat of fantastic flatulence!
Haha! Wow! Thanks so much. Comments like this erase a plethora of negative ones. Thank you for the love!
Send me them!
@@LanceHedrick haha! I so definitely would if I could!!! Anyone?!!
Thank you for the detailed comparison!
Just few days ago I started looking for a hand grinder and thought "would be nice if Lance Hedrick had a video about them"! Great timing, thanks a lot!
Hahaha love it! Hope you enjoyed it
Kingrinder k6 or 1Zpresso Jx pro?
I thought you were super biased towards breville when I saw your toaster, but your kitchen aid blender saved the day. Faith in your objectivity has been restored.
Hahahaha! Hilarious. Thanks for watching, friend!
Hey, Lance. Thanks for the video! The kingrinder k6 also come with a little white rubber, that hold together the lid and the crank, like every other grinder. Maybe they forgot to include in this unit?
I think they did 🥲
The kingrinder comes with a rubber o ring to secure the handle to the lid which makes it sit alot firmer on the grinder
Second this question. I’ve been very happy with my K-Pro, and am curious if I could brew even better cups with a flat burr grinder.
I’m also curious, how does a grinder like the commandante compare to a flat burr grinder?
Would Ode with SSP be an upgrade? What electric grinder would you need to purchase to see a noticeable upgrade for filter coffee particularly?
@@Max-jy4uu other people asked about Made By Knock. I want to be verified on this, but think their Feld 47 has flat burr set?
Hey Lance! I'm excited to watch this video.
I had stepped away from "coffee content" due to being unable to brew for 2 months, I'm starting with this one!
Yay for in-depth reviews!
Incredible! Thanks for making a comeback on MY channel! Seriously means a lot to read that!
I'm really glad to hear you say "easy presso" instead of "one z presso"
Haha, also love your video
I'm glad you confirmed my thoughts on the 1zpresso K-Max! I love the combination of cup quality with fantastic build and ergonomics (especially the external adjustment and magnetic catch cup).
Absolutely! It is a wonderful grinder
The depth and dedication are incredible! I would definitely refer my friends looking for a decent grinder to this video!
Thank you so much!
Incredibly easy to watch for a 1-hour video! Kudo's to you Lance & team.
Wow thank you! Seriously means more than you know. Always very nerve wracking to expect people to want to watch you talk for an hour. Thank you!
It's amazing to see how much variety has come on the hand grinder front in the last few years. I bought my aergrind back when you basically had just Knock, OE or Hario to choose from (obvious exageration), very happy with the grinder and it's not going anywhere, but I'd probably buy something different if I had to make a choice today... maybe
I got the bigger Knock, Feld 47, which has also had an upgrade. I wish I knew how it compares too.
@@Ma_Ba knock has heard the cries of you all! They are sending me a knock. I'll do a video once I've gotten time to play with it!
I bought the J-Max recently. Difference in my espresso shots over my simple electric grinder is night and day
Love this ! Great for anyone on the market for a hand grinder in their budget
For sure! I'll do a budget version in the future
@@LanceHedrick About the drill... I would definitely use the 1/4" drive bit to keep it aligned properly while drilling. 😃
Hahaha good news both times for you, tho! Reading the future
Thank you for this awesome video! It’s very kind of you to have time codes, but I did not miss a moment of this video. Best regards!
After watching this insane vidoe, I purchased a 1Zpresso K-pro(same burr set as K-plus) even though I've already had a C40. Keep going🔥🔥🔥🔥 My favourite coffee youtuber!🎉
KPro is the best.
I'm actually super insane! Thanks Lance for such nice and complete review
Loving my KPro even more! 👍
Yes as you can imagine, remembering everything necessary to film all this is a tall order. Quite a lot lol
Thanks for watching
@@LanceHedrick absolutely, I don't mean to pester you. I just put it there for others watch the video and reading the comments. But really, I've binged a good handful of your videos today and they are amazing!
For sure! Appreciate it! Thanks for watching
Wanted to add… there’s a certain “zen of the bean” that I feel like you get with a hand grinder. Some people don’t know how different a dark roast “feels” compared to a light roast - those people have not used a hand grinder.
Yes. Great way to put it. Zen of the bean 😆😆😆
loved your review.......its clear your not an elitist when it comes to coffee...i also like you chose your own favorit and not what the masses think.i love my comandante....but your review in indepht...i apreciate that....hats off
Love my iz presso jx pro, 2 years, 6 coffees a day, still like brand new, so consistent
They just freaking ROCK.
I’m gonna say it…insane in the membrane!! Couldn’t help it. Love the vid thoroughness greatly appreciated
Thank you! (I had to sing "insane the the brain") appreciate the support
Hence good for dosing again and again =)
Also i learned about the black grind bar and bigger knob.
Subscribed! This was an amazing overview and really helped me narrow the field.
Respect the effort you've gone to with this review, very impressed!

Amazing video! You and James are my favourites coffee geeks!
That is like the best compliment to be put along side daddy Hoff. Thanks!
