  • Opening up my 0282 L31 350 (5.7) 5700 1996-2000 Vortec GM truck, van or SUV replacement crate engine. The plan was to take some of the stock parts for another build and replace them with aftermarket better parts but then things didn't go as intended!
    FYI I have an engine on another stand a few feet away with no intake and covered with a clear engine bag. That engine has been sitting for over a decade and has no rust in the valley like this crate does now.

    The best 350 crates were the black goodwrench 290hp ones that were like $1500 back in 1999/2000…..i had a ‘81 suburban k/10 4x4 with one and it was a beast……now those engines sell for at least $3k if you can even find them…..think its been like 10 yrs since ive seen one being advertised……summit used to sell them

      At the time GM vortec crates were $500ish more than the ATK, kick myself for not spending the extra cause now GM are $1K more than that! Still rumors at the time, the GM ones were not so great....

      @@Ron_Masterjohn this was back in the late 90’s early 2000’s when the new longblocks were roughly $1300/$1500 depending on where you got them…..now they want like $4k for the same thing, probably more than likely refurbished at best too!!! Not to mention the $800/$1000 core

    So I’m reading some of these blocks were bored out. Does that mean theoretically they would make a little more power than advertised?

    • @BOOT
      @BOOT  4 місяці тому

      Potentially yes, that one is overbore by .040 if i rem right. But even factory engines can vary their power output a bit(more so in the past, production is more consistent these days). This vortec crate had other things that would/could hurt power, so maybe it'd be a wash or down even run as is. People use to say corvette engines made more by the detail and care of their assembly, back when the vette plant assembled their own engines. I bought flat tops to replace the dish pistons since I have to take it apart anyway. Thinner head gaskets are a common cheap crate engine upgrade to bump compression & power. Camshafts are of course another effect cheaper upgrade.

      Just measured it for Part 3 the Shortblock, It's overbore! I didn't wanna make you wait for the upload but I gotta try n measure a bit more to confirm the actual size. I tried to look up the pistons and asked ATK I can confirm it's not .060, I'd be bummed if it was!

      @@thomasdebord1144 I shoulda mentioned in my first reply, back when I got the engine I asked ATK if they were bored and how much. Their reply was sometimes, just depends if the core needs it. Guess some are refurbished with hardly any miles, prob warranty replacement or w/e

    Way to late now, but just because I'm working on a set of 062 right now I noticed thy where different heads on it about 5 min n video. 062 has 3 humps on the end where 906 has just 1.. but 1 of my 062 r cranked if u know of anyone has a 062 tht thy will sale please let me know 🤷‍♂️🙏🙏🙏 I have the vortec motor n the machine shop now gettin 1 sleeve put n it cause the guy let it get rained on and 1 cylinder was realy bad, but the rest of the cylinder can b honed and it only had 80,000 miles on it when it was pulled out.. I bought a set -7cc dome forged pistons "srp" to go n it with a new crank, new melling HV oil pump, new rings, .600 lift Harvard's cam "might b to big" 🙉 I said if it don't run good atleast it will sound good..🤣 and i was gonna run the vortec heads also but 1 of them is cracked so idk I might get a set of them cheep aluminum heads off ebay. But ima run a single plan aluminum intake with a 750 double pump carburetor. but if u have anything u might b willing to part with tht might help me out please let me know.. he said the block n everything should b ready next week so I'm n head of a 062 vortec head like bad or a set of aluminum heads to go on it.. cause I'm planning to putting the heads, intake,, carburetor on the new 400 sbc.. cause this is just a temp motor for my son's 98 stepside s-10 I'm gonna go all out on a 400 sbc but I just wanted to get the lil truck running to work all the bugs out of the truck and then build the BIG motor for it.. anyway sorry for rambling on an on, but I love doing this typ of stuff.. again if u have anything tht might work for me please hit me back...🙏

      Think I read in the Jegs reviews that someone else's ATK vortec crate engine also had two diff casting heads. If I wasn't gonna port them, then I might be kicking myself for not checking. Also I've not checked them out entirely yet, so one could be smaller chambers(surfaced, prob the used head) or the valves could be sunk(again the used head). Gonna run em either way!

    • @jonathanlawson4667

      @@BOOT different casting numbers doesn't mean you got two different heads it means that you got a newer or older run of the same head used with the same machine so they will be identical it's not a big deal lol that engine looked pretty good for a two thousand dollar motor lol

      It's common to buy a base crate and mod it up for more horsepower. Plan was to mild port the heads, change the cam, better windage tray and oil pan n so on. I've bought lots of things with PP zero interest payments and I make the payments

    There's not enough surface rust on or in that motor to hurt anything at all I've seen people run far worse

      I've seen a lot of junk run good enough, the truck I bought for it's vortec 350 could prob still be running with the bad cam bearing. I bought this crate to mod and if I had bought a GM then I'd be a lot better off! Still your money, if you wanna save a bit n have a rusty engine go for it

      @@BOOT I don't understand your logic you took that motor apart in front of your Audience with nothing wrong with it and you're bitching about rust and that's your fault for storing it for six months in a garage that isn't climate controlled bro come on now lol

    • @BOOT
      @BOOT  4 роки тому

      I planned pull the heads from the start not tear it down and check, fix and clean/deRust everything. They should of plugged the cylinders but I guess you didn't watch how I said, when I got the Jegs crate that I put plugs in it or how I also said don't really blame them for that. I should of fogged the cylinders anyways but fogging wouldn't of helped the other areas(block, crank, rods because they looked nice and oily) and they would of rusted anywhere. They should of used a good rust preventive like Blueprint Engines did on the shortblock that has sat in the same garage for years longer! Far as my comment bout getting a GM well that is towards all the other things I've found wrong with it in this and the following videos, I plan to find more when I check clearances, some say they have found missing rings with these crates. I bet there are a lot of things you wouldn't understand, I suggest you watch videos more closely before you comment
