DIY Kusamono planting from spring garden weeds

- In this video I make a diy Kusamono planting using spring garden weeds.
With the coming spring all kind of spring weeds are starting to pop up in my vegetable garden so I decided to try and make my first Kusamono planting out of these seasonal garden weeds. Kusamono plantings are intended to be displayed alone as the main focal point as opposed to Shitakusa which is an accent plant used to accompany a Bonsai tree.
As a Kusamono pot I'm using a container which I made around 10 years ago from papercrete, a mixture of paper pulp and cement. For the actual planting I am using some moss and three randomly selected garden weeds: Common groundsel (Senecio vulgaris), Purple deadnettle (Lamium purpureum) and Annual bluegrass (Poa annua). One could imagine various other combinations of seasonal plants. With some prior research, groups of compatible species could be selected to make a spring Kusamono worthy of being displayed in exhibitions (unlike this first attempt of mine).

Well, the process of making this pot was very much the same as making mud pies. 😁 The only difference is that I used a mixture of shredded paper, cement and a reddish brown pigment.

Very cool idea! It really makes you appreciate how pretty some of these plants are when you give them a chance and stop seeing them as just pests.
So true! I came up with the idea while clearing the weeds in my vegetable garden. I was surprised by the foliage colors and flowers of these weeds which is a great sight in spring after the long and gloomy winter.

I got very inspired and made something big similar , but in a regular pot , since I didn’t have a bonsai/kusamono pots in reach. Day two: plants look pretty stable in their new environment.

@@OddBonsai I have a small fern, wild strawberry, wild glass and a purple flower, not sure what it is exactly , I think it’s a type of cantaurea. And some moss around it. It is alive and striving
Sounds nice with a good chance of becoming delicious when those wild strawberries produce fruits :)

Have you tried using a diamond hole saw instead of a masonry bit? They vibrate less, which makes pots less likely to break. Spray some water on the pot beforehand to help with lubrication and to decrease heating up of the bit if you use a diamond hole saw :)
Sometime after I made this video I bought a diamond bit to make holes in a ceramic pot. They do the job better as you say but they are quite a bit more expensive compared to a masonry bit. I also used water, it also helped with dust. Thanks!

How long does it live in the pot
The purple deadnettle will probably die off once the hot summer comes while the groundsel, annual bluegrass and moss will live until the first winter freeze comes. After that only the moss will survive if you keep it outside.
I made it as a seasonal planting for spring. The beauty of this is that you can easily make it again in the following spring as the weeds are readily available.

Each plant has a place in nature so why ignore those we consider weeds. Many of the species we use as common house plants are growing as weeds or common trees in other places.

That big one looks like Canadian(Canada) Thistle. One of the toughest weed I have to deal with in my garden. You are welcome to them any time in my backyard! Looking good buddy!
I appreciate your offer and I would gladly drop by to collect some if Canada wouldn't be an ocean away :). Thistle grows in my area as well and I agree that it is quite a resilient weed. It has really nice flowers though, but it would make a pretty big kusamono. :)
I was just playing arround to see if weeds can make something nice but I think the planting will soon get out of proportions. Next time I will do some research to select some weeds that stay small.
@@OddBonsai I kind of like the idea of the plants overflowing and covering the small papercrete dish. It will look like you have plants just growing out of the table. Haha
