THANK YOU! Finally a channel with no annoying music, no frivolous video intro, and no adds. I truly appreciate your channel and how straight to the point your videos are. Keep up the great work!!!
Fingers crossed! According to the information I have up to now it can be a bit difficult to get Ficus benjamina to back bud. So if I can't get it to do so I may ask you to share your secrets. 😋
Thank you very much Vincent. Ficus benjamina does grow pretty fast but it's a bit stubborn at back budding. I also enjoyed the pruning sesion in the rain. Very calming.
Hello my friend Stefan... I think your Benjaminas is going into a beautiful tropical style trees... By the way you've got a very spacious garden... A lot more trees can be added in your collection.. 😊😊
Thank you Alex! You are too kind. For now I am trying to get the trunks to thicken up a bit more and get some branching in their lower parts. Yes, there is enough space for more trees. I just need the time to take care of more. :)
I'm happy to hear that the video helped you and I appreciate the feedback. I try to share useful knowledge as much as I can in all my videos so I hope you'll also find future videos useful.
Great video, Stefan. I appreciate you walking us through your branch selection process. I’m starting my foray into tropical and thought Benjamina would be a good jumping in point. Watching your feed has given me the head start I needed. Thank you again, Stef. I’m constantly lookin forward to your next release.
Thank you Yeti! If you didn't purchased a tree yet I would suggest you try out a microcarpa. Benjamina is also great but microcarpa responds better to hard cuts. Benjamina has the bad habit of not back budding. I'm glad to hear my thought process is helpful, I was afraid it might be too boring 😋. Thank you for the feedback! I really appreciate it.
@@OddBonsai my tree is a cutting from a friend, an “extra” if you will. Like you, I bonsai on a budget, and it’s a tight one. And don’t worry about people being bored, it’s the students responsibility to recognize value in the lesson. Besides, I think you’re the only person out there who pronounces the Latin names of the plants correctly!
It's great to have friends to get cuttings from. 👍 My friends either have no plants or they only have plants not suitable for bonsai (like orchids). My native language is of Latin origin so it comes naturaly to me to pronounce the Latin names the way I do. So I supose this compensates a bit for what I lack in English skills :)
Hi Stefan, looking at the repotting, the tree grew a lot but not bud backing, at least compared to a ficus microcarpa. Benjamina is really a hard challenge for bonsaist but I think yours should back bud after this pruning. Excellent work! I envy your rain, I miss it so much
Thanks Saro! Yes, it did grow a lot during summer but no back budding. Well, to be honest there was one bud right at the base of one trunk but I pinched it off since it was in a useless location. We also had very little rain this summer. I ran out of rain water for watering my trees so I had to use well water which is very hard and now the leaves are full of while mineral deposits. I was very happy to see rain again. I hope you get some soon.
@@OddBonsai I have the same problem with water, all my trees look white. I have to clean leaves with water and vinegar but I was too lazy to do it with hot temperatures! Let's hope your benjamina will back bud🤞🤞
@@RosarioCostanzo If cleaning the leaves means taking tem one by one the I don't think it has anything to do with lazyness. :) My benjamina alone probably had around 100 leaves... Thounsands and thousands of leaves in total.
Thanks for your suggestions. I may do one on the tools I'm using. I don't know about the branch bending video since I mostly rely on clip and grow. I'm not very fond of using wire.
Thanks Xin. To me they still look like 3 sticks :) Sorry but my english is far from perfect. Does taping also means something related to sitting in the rain? If yes, then it was nice. I always liked the calming sound of rain.
@@OddBonsai taping = recording = videoing, they all work. I think taping is an older expression where actually used video tapes or cassette tapes hahaha
Lol. That was the last thing I would have thought of and I googled a lot trying to figure out what it meant. 😋 Well the answer is: It probably took at least 2 times longer that it would without filming but I had plenty of time to think about each cut :))
Not new update on this one but it is growing strong. I'm currently running a sort of experiment o several ficus trees including this one growing free in a grow tent. Will surely post an update, I just don't know when yet. thanks for asking.
It's very difficult to make benjamina bonsai. You never can control it with directional pruning. After couple of months it'll take its own shape. Very adamant tree I will say.
Yes, even if I only have limited experience with the species I completely agree. It can be a bit stubborn. I didn't manage to get it to back bud yet but I'm not giving up yet.
Yes, they grew a lot over the summer and they are already starting to grow again after the pruning. It was a perfect day after many days of hot weather. 👍

Ficus benjamina are always a challenge, but awesome trees when developed!!
Even if it's development is not going the way I want yet, I hope that with enough patience it will someday make a nice bonsai.

@@OddBonsai I have only cut them back and made sure there was high humidity. I also don’t find them to be the easiest species to work with though
I see... Well, I'm going to find out in a week or two if this pruning did the job.

Hello and thanks! Ficus benjamina is a fast grower but it is a bit stubborn in regard to back budding.

Hello Stefan looks like it'll make a fantastic looking clump style in the future
Thanks! I do hope it will start to resemble a lump of trees rather than a clump of sticks sometime in the future. 😋
They are growing really nicely. Beautiful day to be out in the garden.
Yep, they are great growers.
It was a very welcome cool day after two months of extremely hot weather. I had enough summer for this year. 🥵
