I watch it on theater and I was blown away with Babylon.
For me personally... now it became my favorite Damian Chazzle film, before that is Whiplash and now is Babylon.
Is an epic drama! A 3 hours of bumpy ride and romantic nightmare. BABYLON is totally wild and chaos.
A chronicles the rise and fall of multiple characters during Hollywood's transition from silent film to sound films in the late 1920s.
I love it so much and I can't wait for the 4K steelbook.

Dude, please learn your terminology. A brand new movie is not a 4K restoration. The film is almost still wet. What did they have to restore. It's a 4K transfer. It's a native 4K Digital Intermediate, but it is NOT a 4K restoration.

It’s a rough watch but I enjoyed it. The performances are fantastic..besides Harley Quinn character being in it. Robbie sounded like Quinn throughout the movie to me. She just couldn’t shake that voice. If edited with some scenes cut out, I’d add it into my collection. I liked it-but I cannot add it to my collection.

Ken, the movie IS based on real people from the silent film era. Margot Robbie is a stand in for Clara Bow. And Pitt is a stand-in for some dude whose name I don’t remember but who was a huge silent star who couldn’t cut it when sound was introduced. He fictionalized their stories a bit but it’s definitely based on two real people. I agree with you that the movie is beautifully shot…and too long.

Yeah, I remember reading about the movie when it was in development and they were taking about how Brad Pitt was going to play the biggest star of his age…and they said the name you just posted (John Gilbert) and I was like “who?” and then immediately forgot it. Google says he was the highest paid star for like 5+ years in the 20s and 30s….and most of his movies no longer exist. 😳

I feel like a good way to describe this movie without any details about the movie would be to compare it’s vulgarity and craziness to the Wolf of Wall Street and it’s atmosphere to The Great Gatsby. As someone who studied film production and work in the industry I absolutely loved this film but can also understand why some may dislike it

It has some very accurate portrayals of Hollywood in that era. There was a guy who sold the actors drugs while on set, even the guy who was peed on was a fictional version of a true story, however she didn't have an overdose, she was crushed to death by his weight and yes people did try to cover it up. The singing in the rain scene, is a lovely recreation of a scene from the film Hollywood Revue of 1929, which was a nice touch, i really enjoyed Babylon, great performances from everyone and a great story. I loved it.

Seen this in theaters and loved it. It was so grand. This was as much an experience in theater as Avatar 2 was. I really enjoyed the first 2/3 of the film. It was really long and because the 3rd act kinda fell apart, it felt like it. The first two hours flew by though. I plan to buy it on 4K but not till there is a price drop under $20.

Regarding your comments about spending too much time with the characters and not really caring for them when you're meant to, I think that was one of the points of the movie. As film changed throughout the years, the audience and studios stopped caring about the stars of the past and had all moved on to the next big thing.

Is that $62M domestic or full? Does it include foreign receipts? I ask because a lot of movies appear to not make money, but when they total all the receipts including overseas box office, it does much better. I've not seen it yet but it seems that it's a big movie on spectacle, and those movies tend to do well in Europe, where the emphasis on the spoken word isn't as important as the images on the screen. At any rate, I'm really looking forward to seeing it it, and also plan on getting the 4k steelbook.

I love Babylon. It's to long, and it was very much mis-marketed. I agree in Margo but disagree on Brad. Look at Bullet Train. I love everything the movie does, it just needed to be tightened up. Agree, 2.5 hours would've been enough. I'll definitely get this steelbook.

How do you review a movie when you didn't even watch it in one sitting? Expecting a movies third act to land after you just amputated the emotion, pacing, and momentum of the first act by pausing it for 24 hours and coming back to it is just not realistic and you're ruining the experience for yourself. The movie was designed as a three hour experience where the third act pays off the emotion you're feeling from the first act. Do you think it's a coincidence that your issue is with the second half, after you had paused it and waited a day later to watch it? I get triggered by the modern audiences constantly, constantly, constantly whining about 3 hour films and their viewing habits because masterpieces like Lawrence of Arabia, Once Upon a Time in America, Yi Yi, Andrei Rublev, etc. won't be able to exist anymore with the media constantly slandering long run-times anytime a movie is over 2 hours. The problem is our attention spans because of social media. The excuse of not having enough time is non-sense. If your hobby is movies, you can schedule an extra hour in for the occasional 3 hour movie.

    • @midlevelmedia
      @midlevelmedia  Рік тому +2

When I watched "The Godfather" for the first time, it was over two nights, and every bit of that emotion hit me. I can remember and lock back into an emotion pretty easily. I get your point, but watched with my wife and with two kids, we have very few three hour blocks we can devote to watching movies. We split up a lot of viewing experiences.

In addition, the ending sounds extremely bleak. I want to be entertained not grossed outer depressed when I watch a movie, and I am someone who absolutely loves this period in Hollywood.

I meant to say prior not poor. Also, I'm all for director's cut or unedited editions, but in this case I wish the studio would release a version that cut out all the disgusting scenes as mentioned above yet still drives the point across of the decadence. I guess the ending would still have to be the same as it is already though. This is going to be a big lesson for studios in the future, where you just don't give a blank check to a film-maker. This is a case where studio intervention could have helped the film.
