Trail Bike of The Year WINNER | Commencal Meta TR 29 Brit Edition
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- Flat-out fast, yet agile and fun, Commencal nails the do-it-all UK trail bike. A trail bike should be happy to have a go at pretty much anything: capable when the going gets tough, not too much of a handful when the trail is more chilled. It doesn't need KOM-setting climbing capability, but it needs to get to the top without too much pain. Most importantly, it's got to be fun. The Commencal Meta TR 29 Brit Edition does it all and that's why it's our 2019 Trail Bike of the Year.
Specifically, it's the Brit Edition that stands out from the crowd. Standard Meta TRs get a 140mm fork and all-round tyres, but in reverence to the burgeoning DIY trail spots that pop up all over the hillier parts of the UK, Commencal has stuck a 150mm Fox Factory 36 fork and a chunky Schwalbe Magic Mary with the Addix Soft compound rubber up front.

So what does everyone think of our Trail Bike of The Year Winner? Have we got it right, or should another bike have won? Let us know in the comments below!
BikeRadar I think it’s too heavy for a trail bike. A trail bike should be able to be ridden all day for multiple days in my opinion.
Dollars in which currency?
@@dangerouscookie4790 £ British pounds
Good bike but ugly. No colour coordination. Bars are one colour - forks another, frame something different altogether. But I do take your word for that it's a good bike nonetheless
I think it’s too heavy, it’s in the weight category of an enduro and thats just too much for long days of trailriding.
Brit edition? Did they move the steering wheel :)
Dont forget that u have to as switch the pedals around :)
De animatie Echt leuk yeah back to the right place
WheelyNewb nah
The brakes are switched to different sides of the bars.
nope, they added a cool accent and bad teeth
I never got why these types of reviews make it out that tires make bikes different or stand out from other bikes. You wear your tires out relatively quickly, and as soon as you buy new ones... well...
Why aren't all these tests done with the same tires so you can actually make out the differences between the BIKES and not the tires?
What if another bike has better suspension, geometry or value for money? And then you stick the same tires on that bike? Clearly that must be a better bike?
But you have to change the tires
Such a killer bike for the money. Nothing to change out of the box. And the geo is spot on for an aggressive trail bike.
this rig was on my bike, er, radar, and then these reviews came out. i've been beating on one now (custom high end build) for a couple months and it's all that and a bag of chips. it's also unique round these parts and when you pull up to the bro circle jerk of carbonium super bikes, the heavy metal meta get's a lot of admiring glances, especially with the sick build on mine. in brushed alloy, it's razor sharp and very very fun to ride.
Tom Marvin, you're about the most fair/honest youtube bike reviewer!
Heavy duty bike that will last. The brushed essential version has decent spec with GX and 150 fox performance 36 float up front, one pound lighter and 900$ less, it could be an attractive alternative to the British edition
Top comment M8 - drop dead gorgeous, and 900$ can buy you the majority of that kit. I honestly like the look of the Fox Performance stuff over these, and you can cover the cost of tires to you heart's content on that spare change, can probably fit in some bespoke suspension tuning - not to mention take it on holiday. Excellent call.
Awesome limestone climbing in Finale😜
Got this bike 2 weeks ( Signature Edition ) ago it’s an absolute beast, a good all rounder like the review stated.
Blah blah - Magic Mary - blah blah blah - sticky tyres - blah blah - British green - blah blah blah - looks cool - Take my money.
Lol, glad you enjoyed the video!
I love my 2020 Commencal Meta TR 29. I'm in Oregon USA and bought it right after Pink Bike's Review.
I am so happy to have it to ride local mountains through the CV19 Season!!!
For a trail bike my opinion is that 130mm is the ideal mark in suspension for climbing and descending, a trail isnt just all down and up it's a mix up.
Like others have said this is closer to an enduro than a trail bike. 150mm is 10mm shy of enduro bike. It also looks like they listened to community feedback and it shows that it comes with a Shimano XT brake set a gx drivetrain that is how it should be. I would have liked to see Xt cranks as well with a gx rear end
150mm on a 29er is definetely "all mountain/enduro" like. as it's like a 160mm on a 27.5... The Commencal Meta am 4.0 came with 160 and it was an enduro bike 3 years ago. Now the 4.2 27.5 comes with 170 and 180mm. Everything is getting bigger. I still think 150mm Fox 36 is a sweet spot for a trail bike if you ride aggressively, although personally I'd get the 29 am instead. That'd be a proper upgrade if you own a 4.0
Well, Commencal "is" known for their Enduro rigs. Just look at how many races they've won as of late. I've got one myself and swear by them.
Just got one, but the race build. I didnt want a full on enduro and i didn't want a soft trail bike. this hits right in the middle. Can flow a mellow singletrack, can hit a jump line, can bash rock gardens, and can hang out with the big travel boys. Spot on as an aggressive trail bike.👌
Nice to see it was tested in the British muddy and rooty trails. Haha. Ok jokes. But that bike looks dope. I want it.
We don't always purposely just ride muddy trails, we just have no choice.
I know right, it just fuckin rains 24/7
Where do you guys live
Jayesh Jayan Britain or the uk for everyone else, I personally live near the north of wales so it’s wet steep and fast
Just love companies that come with Shimano xt stock! By far the best budget brakes over SRAM anyday!
"It uses a pretty standard 4 bar linkage", you say? Nope, it's not a 4 bar at all, it just looks a bit like one- it's actually a linkage driven single pivot.
yarp - my apologies - getting half a dozen videos out in a day takes its toll on the brain and occasional slip-ups happen - more coffee next time!!
@@TomMarvin1 Say 3 hail maries and ye be forgiven. PS did you used to guide for Bikevillage by any chance?
@@andrewcunningham9256 much appreciated...
Never guided for Sam, but I was chef for a summer... have also spent many weeks there over the summer! When might we have bumped in to each other?
Before my time but my mate Chris was out with you. Just recognised the name and wondered.
Oooo! My dream bike! Keep looking at it and now yous say its trial bike of the year! What to do!
Daniel Jones doooooo it
Bang for your buck 10/10
Commencal did such a good job updating this bike. I have the Meta TR Essential from 2016. it was a 27.5 with a 140 Pike RC fork and only 11 speed. The Alpha kit was lacking and i have cracked 2 stems. This updated larger wheel bigger travel bike is probably the best buy you can get. My TR completely bangs trails like an enduro bike and climbs well enough for a trail bike.
Are you guys going to do an enduro bike of the year competition
sadly not this year!
This pretty much is an enduro bike
Not to mention that Green looks nice 👌🏼 beast of a bike for a great price.
Thanks for watching and keep your eye on the channel for the contender videos in the coming weeks!
What a fantastic looking bike. 😍
Great video. What is the best climbing 2019/2020 trailbike.... Always talk about descent...
because its more important and they did say what bike was the best climber in this video anyway
Smart move with the DPX2. My friends on 130mm bikes and xc type shocks can't keep up with me on gnarly rides. Their shocks get hot and lose damping control.
I think its more of a psycological effect then an actuall one, Thats why i ride a Super Deluxe R :) to avoid the getting slowed by "bad gear"
@@jesperviktorsson8027 In this case it isn't psychological.
Great looking bike, I may have missed it but the value pricing, is it even close in price to the other bikes tested?
The world needs more British Green bikes.
How different is the META TR from the META AM in ride and or feel ✌ ☝️
First Ride . First win Commencal bycicles for a Dangerous mountain biker.✌🏻
Rad bike! (I think there is a low key bias)
Do you think this will compliment a YT Jeffsy as a bike for more gravity focused riding and bike parks?
I was thinking of going AM but realistically I’ll only be doing alpine trips once a year so this will probably be better suited to UK riding. Jeffsy is my bike for local (south UK) less gnarly stuff.
Jim 86 I think it’s too similar to the Jeffsy. 130mm rear is not really for gravity/bike park riding the AM is much better for that.
I needed up getting the Meta Power ⚡️
I have a Commencal Ramones rn and I hope to upgrade to one of these or AM.
I am looking for a new 29er trail bike and was looking forward to trail bike of the year editions of both mbuk and mbr. I am somewhat disappointed to see that out of all the bikes that could be tested the best all round trail bike that money can buy for £3500.00 is 15kg in weight!! Crazy IMO. Fine for an enduro bike but not for a good all round trail bike. This kind of capability at the expense of weight only makes sense in the gnarliest of trails which is fine if thats what you only ride but it does not serve or complement a wide range of trails. We spend most of our time climbing afterall. I feel mbuk is off the mark somewhat, and is offering poor advice to the majority of trail riders out there. This is the "Brit edition ironically being tested in Portugal. Love the colour of the bike mind.
YT jeffsy all the way
thats a beautiful bike! Love the great content BikeRadar!
Would you recommend a 5”1’ rider to ride 29” wheels?
Definitely do a test ride first dude! I thought I'd like the 29ers because they roll for days, but I found the 27.5 was more manueverable. The commencal meta comes in both
Shred Dead Redemption II thanks man. Yea I’m gonna give them a test this Thursday and see how they feel at a bike park.
EVERYONE should ride a 29er! :)
@@Twongz_does_anything 29ers have actually been proven to be faster....descending and climbing. That's why almost all EWS racers are running 29ers now...
I think it’s a winner. But could you help me here. I have a 76cm inseam but I stand just shy of 180cm tall (5’11” and a touch). Will a large in this bike suit my sizes ? i.e. short legs but longer reach?
What bike for an all-day-out riding?
So on the normal top model, it comes with rock shox suspension and it has 140mm travel fork instead of a 150mm travel fork on models spec’d with fox shox suspension. Could it be adjusted to 150mm travel without buying a new fork?
Yep, a new 150 mm airspring is about $35 US. I'm not sure if the normal model has the GRIP2 damper as the production Brit version was stated to have.
Should’ve had some hope bits, but there’s no way the price could’ve been less than 6000 with some of that brit bling
Is the head angle actually 66.5 degrees as the 140mm forked version is also listed as 66.5 degreees?
My brit edition measures closer to 66
are the shocks in the front are angled inward? or nah?
How different is the TR from the AM want to know witch one to choose
Scott Ransom/Genius?
I like the green, but I don't think the bike would be my first choice.
Like YT will be even better when you replace the E13 wheels (won't have a choice when they fail)
Ant G why should they fail?
@@G00glieS every person I know with a Jeffsy or Meta (both e13) has had a lot broken spokes or worse.
I don't think it's deserved winner. Yet another bike with 66-67 seat tube angle, are we still in...stone age? I don't know frame geo history well at all, but that angle been there for years. Put a tall person on an XL and they'll explain :-)
@@dave_clarke "Effetcive" value is just a marketing bullshit. If You're average height or rather below, You might not care. How is a value that is totally different for different height people given as a constant? That 76,5 is only correct if Your saddle is exactly at the height of the head tube. My saddle is about 13cm above......the handlebar
Sometimes its nice to sit on the saddle in the low position but in this case it’s too far forward.
Great bikes, shocking customer service! Ordered an "IN STOCK" bike from their website, 2 weeks later order is still processing, sent emails and messages through Facebook with no response, finally get someone to answer the phone today to be told it isn't in stock and won't be for another month, and that I am mistaken it must have said it was out of stock or pre order on the website, I showed them the website still states it's in stock to be told well we can ship next you'll have to wait, I expect better from a company who have just been given 2k of my money a bit of communication would be a start!
what bike?
125mm dropper o_0 on a 'L'??
125mm on medium, 150mm on large
Can I make this bike more enduro oriented by adding more travel rear and front?
yes, changing the rear 210x50 to 210x55 gets your 140mm rear and slap a 160mm front fork on. Commencal actually has a bike with these components. Commencal meta tr 29 sx 2020.
Finale ligure❤
I'll take a Canyon Spectral AL 6.0 and over a grand in change cheers
Makes no sense, very different specs. If the Canyon had the same specs, then the price comparison Would stick
??? That makes no sense they have different builds
logic please? not sure how you can compare the two.
Why bother mentioning the tyres - they're a consumable and represent a tiny fraction of the cost?
Beacause it is a review Of bikes out Of the box, if you go Down the upgrade Road in a review, it Would be All over the place.
I agree, but it's always nice to get a nice set of tyres. I'm tired of bike companies that just throw in shitty ones for the sake of it, because people like you don't seem to care much. I like when they care about every little details. Just like when you get pedals and a good saddle, even though you probably got better ones already.
Pierre Thenot - MTB People like me?, you dont know me, and therefor Can’t judge my point Of view or knowledge Of tires. It is the first thing i change on my bikes, and experiment with. But my answer relates to bike tests, and only that. They have to test them out Of the box, or else the test is useless. First the tires, then the brakes, maybe another fork then?, to many variables.
@@flemming_j_ I'm not talking to you. This was a direct response to the first comment.
Pierre Thenot - MTB Ok, sry for the misunderstanding 👍🏻
Any issues with heel strikes with the top of the rear triangle?
A touch yeah, but not too bad
i own one. fuckin right you got it right, it's the bomb.
this is mini enduro, not trail...sure it works nicely in finale but that s way more gnarly and DH biased terrain than most people ride in most places
as mentioned in the video, i felt it was the least compromised over the widest range of trail types around. if you never rode anything remotely gnarly, i'd not pick this, but as an all-round option, it ticks a lot of boxes...
You also mention in the video that it s suitable for shorter rides, eventually with some uplift, etc,it s not good for making long days. I guess it comes down how you define "trail", for me a trailbike should be light and efficient enough to complete big days out without draining my energy with their weight. I used to own a meta v4 which you guys selected as trailbike of the year in 2016. That was also more of an enduro bike then trail given its character...
He had Fox front and rear shocks and rockshox socks
Size L should weigh way over 15 kg. This is inacceptable for a trailbike!
Weight really isn't the problem people make it out to be, This bike is light enough and enough is all you need
@@TheMeta6 To a certain point I agree with you. Good geometry (like in this case) is a huge factor, too. Still, a trail bike should be light enough to go up and downhill all day long. And for my taste, 15 kg are above what I consider an all around trailbike. This is Enduro territory.
I own the enduro version of this bike and did over 1200m of climbing on it yesterday over a4 hour period... I'm really not that fit and I really dislike climbing and I was fine! Kept up with my 2 riding partners who were on far more "trail" type bikes that weigh less. I agree with you on paper 15kg seems a lot but I just don't notice it
TheMeta6 that’s badass to hear. Good work
@@TheMeta6 Good job mate! On Sunday we just absolved a close to 11 hour ride with way over 2000 m of climbing and a distance of 120 km. On its ups and downs it was very technical. This is where every gram counts to stay fit as possible since you have to push the extra weight with every single rotation of your legs. And 1 or 2 kg difference will add up to a big amount of fatigue.
that bike is really really close to an enduro bike.
the song sounds like it's inspired by tiny bradshaw's: Train Kept A Rollin', most known with the Yeardbirds & Aerosmith.
but about the bike, I hope people won't have issues with bearings getting pushed out like on 2018 bike.
what matters is a long term tests.
this bike is not for me.
Same guitar riff, good spot. Waiting for my 2021 to arrive!

Why does that 150 mil fork look like a 120 or 130 🤣🤣
The year is just beginning tho 😂
i like it

I want a carbon version...NOW!😁
Not gonna happen
Plastic sucks.
‘pretty good climber... might need lockout’ um we’d expect an excellent climber for the winning bike no?
He explained it in the vid, it wasn’t the best bike in every single category but was a much better Alround bike compared to the other bikes in test
perfect bike to save up and buy. I don't care about price. Seems all the brit reviews equate cheap with good.
Not a four bar!
Correct!
Commencal must make lighter frame for tr model meta am and meta tr almost same weight
They don't need to. Their "heavy" frames have won plenty competitions and most recently too. Shaving a fraction on weight is nothing when you know how to ride and push the bike.
enduro bike of the year
??
Would be nice if they removed all decals from a bike - EVERYTHING - tested the bike - then let them be "scored" "compared"
How does it compare to the John Morciglio's Thundervolt Kodiak? www.bentrideronline.com/messageboard/showthread.php?t=119635
I prefer my yt 3000 bucks full carbon..
I'm just here to find out how to pronounce 'Commencal'.
Haha, we hope the found the video useful then!
It's French, pronounced: "Co-mon-sal" :-)
In fact it should ce commençal where the ç is pronounced as an « s » in French. They probably erased the cédille (ç) for commercial reasons or because capital letters loose their accents. So indeed it is pronounced: comonsal.
Well, I still prefer CommenKal.
I feel like u only made this bike the winner bc it’s the “Brit addition”
Put it up against the Druid trail bike I bet it would lose.
$3,200. That's where I stopped the video.
CommenÇal
What about Friendship? #jeffsy
It's so heavy for a trail bike :(
don't skip leg day
Nice video quality, 8k
Commencal just can’t figure out how to make a bike under 33 pounds
Take a long bathroom break before you go riding in the morning and you'll make up the difference.
I don't get the point. Test after test seems to show that heavier bikes are no slower on the descents. They are often faster and weight = strength. Too many bikes now are fragile.
3lbs dont make a difference... I dont really feel a difference between my 180mm Enduro and my Enduro Hardtail which is significantly lighter....Geo and maybe unsprung mass (not so much going uphill) is way more important
Fritz Schuller They make bikes that last and take the beating without a blink. For many, that’s reassuring over the saved grams...
33 lbs? Poor you if you can't handle that. Commencal is known for winning races, pure and simple. They don't need to worry about how to shave off a pound or less.

Just a shame it has 29 wheels...

The meta is not a trail bike
This bike is too heavy.
People get too hung up on weight
Jim 86 I think so too.!better to lose some of my fat gut and then everything will feel lighter😂
Todd Johnson sane here 😬🤤
Those few KG actually account for 1% of the total weight once you include the rider, it’s nothing.
Losing weight from your body is not the same as losing weight off the bike.
Robert Turnip yeah it’s generally better for you!
Too heavy for a trail bike
