Personally I think you just can't beat GoPro, been in the game for so long and it's just so well optimised for action sport. The video quality on the insta is great, but does get blurry at speed, like it can't process the sensor input fast enough, and the audio is ok, but doesn't seem as good. I've seen some other people use this camera and I just don't think it works as well as a GoPro.
It seems to me like it could also be a bitrate issue. Maybe try increasing that to see if it improves this. Because it could be that the keyframes are all sharp but the others lose quality when the interframe compression can't keep up, because it's too limited by maximum bitrate.
Gopro tend to just do one setup very well. High frame rates, alright mic quality etc. But there's reason the company's nearly gone bankrupt a few times. It's not really implementing much in each revision. Insta360 is coming at styff from a whole new angle of a small camera that can just do everything fairly well. Once they get on top of their software issues / firmware etc then I think it'd going to become very very close. But regardless of sponsorships / deals etc there's probably a big reason a lot are moving to insta360
Video is good at 720p but the audio doesn't sound as good through my headphones. If there's any way of reducing the wind noise I'm all for this camera.
Bike is sweet, but not a fan of the new camera. The terrain is super blurry at speed, but snaps into focus every time you slow down, like the auto focus processor can't keep up with you.
As someone who's into road biking but doesn't mountain bike at all and came across your channel because YT be weird like that I honestly didn't think it was possible to ride a bike on some of the stuff you do, it's so narrow and crazy, really impressive.
So, got yourself a frame sponsor then Dave, that's great, look forward to the bike check and if you just carried over old parts to the frame or how you built it. To the camera, not sure if this is a sponsorship, but agree with the rest, GoPro is the most popular when it comes to action sport cameras for a reason. The angle and the constant seeming to zoom/move in and out and the blur at faster speed and in darker sections, were off putting to say the least, could not watch the entire video - think it's like digital vs optical zoom, you can digitally try to adjust/manipulate an image to bring it closer all you want, but nothing beats real optical zoom.
I really like the expanded field of view. Shows how much work your upper body is doing. Also you can see the front wheel making contact with the terrain which is neat.
Came here to post this, and here it was!👍🏽 I think this view/angle is something a lot of people can use as a learning tool. You can see how much Dave is rowing the bike forward and back, feet out of view, back in view, then out again, the rubber picking up the bumps like braille. I’ve watched probably all the DD videos, but this one illustrates how well this dude keeps his tires in traction by controlling how the bike reads the terrain. Try .5 or .25 speed playback for those wanting to see it in pimp mode!
Sick. I just built up a Meta SX after my brand new AM was stolen. I couldn’t believe how different the two bikes felt. I’m loving the SXso far. Nice to see another one ripping on the north shore.
This camera/angle seems to capture the details of the trail itself really well, I like it for that. I get a better sense of what I imagine it feels like to ride it.
Nice vid and nice new bike! idk enough about cameras to speak to the new vs old one. I liked the quick "hellos" yall were exchanging on the trail haha. Oh and the mountainbiking was good too I guess (duh XD).
I vote Hero 10. From stuff I've watched, the only thing that the Insta360 wins at is the 360 view with the editing software. If you aren't looking to film in 360 mode, then the Hero 10 has better audio and HD video (blur and color aren't great on the 360).
Personally.... I am definitely more envious of your skills than the media...and nothing can completely capture the real thing and accurately represent it well. Thanks for sharing!
Camera a little fuzzy at times. Great riding skills! Have you ridden this trail prior? It's amazing how anyone can read the trail without eating a tree!
Not a big fan of the new camera, the audio quality sounds like you're keeping it in a can, it's kind of hollow and not as full as the other one. The auto-stabilization is a bit much imo, it takes away from the 'action' in a way, as this stabilization makes the video feel more floaty. And as another commenter posted, at higher speeds the terrain blurs a lot more than the previous camera did, even showing signs of pixels in big blobs. All in all not a big fan.
I kinda like the wide angle, as it shows how much your arms and the bike are moving around, which helps reduce the illusion of smoothness the image stabilization produces. I really like the edit video insertion of the huck to flat feature... That rock didn't appear nearly as large from the pov shot! The more angles (other cameras) you can incorporate into your videos, the more awesome they will be.
Awesome skills and laps. The camera angle was nice but the greens seemed overblown - rather like the false green for plastic aquarium plants. What's with the squeaky suspension? Love watching your videos and wishing I had even 10% of the skill needed to ride like that :)
Another example of spectacular riding! Didn’t notice a drastic difference in the camerawork besides the coloring looking a little less natural with the Insta360.
I think the insta is a great camera. For me it makes the footage more "real" with steepness and transparency of the trail whereas GoPro footage looks more "flat". GoPro does do a better job with stabilization. I have never used Insta cameras but The Loam Ranger seems to have the stabilization formula down with them. Angle is perfect though. Definitely is a vast improvement over your other cameras, where they were very blury, in some spots, in past videos, I can tell, with this camera, I don't see any blurriness, whatsoever, which is a HUGE improvement, imo.
The field of view is pretty friggin' cool and evokes an almost 1:1 POV. However, something seems funky with the stabilization periodically. When there is a sudden move, the image kinda tears and/or blurs. Overall, I think the GoPro image quality and stabilization is superior, but the Insta creates a good POV with these settings. If they could match the stabilization quality and bitrate of the GoPro it would be tits.

I just started the video and the first thing that i noticed is how steep that trail looks. So for me that gives me the perspective that your other videos are missing.
Hero definitely provides a sharper feel to the video, you can tell in the trees and when picking up speed especially. Still doesn't take anything away from the video itself amazing ride!!
Dave, please, if you keep using the insta 360 you HAVE to get a high end external mike. The one it comes with sounds pretty trash. It might support Bluetooth, I'm not sure. You can't sacrifice that much audio quality for a cooler angle. The quality looks good though 👍
The angle is interesting, not sure if I prefer it over the Gopro but it definitely gives the more 'open' feel of the woods. I feel like something's off with the settings or just the camera's processing though, the bike is quite crisp but the rest of the trees and motion look out of focus, or not enough bitrate. May just be a side effect of the lens, but that stood out immediately given how crisp the environment usually is in your vids. Just my 2 cents.

Like Christmas in July! Camera looks to be working well. I like the additional field of view. I think higher bitrate would help with some of the video quality, also youtube compression isn't your friend in that department. Did Nick convince you to go alloy instead of carbon? lol Looks like its a great bike for you! I see some XT brakes and what looks to be GX AXS shifting + a Red RockShox fork. Camera is decent. A different perspective? I didn't notice. Once someone pointed out the audio, I think it might be worse. Possibly eliminates some of the go pro effect.
the fov is amazing. but the rest seemed a bit smoother on the gopro. but to be fair the light conditions in htese dark forrests are just pretty bad also for a gopro. was it a 360video where you did cut out a big front facing fov or was it just the highest fov setting for a normal video recording?
Camera is not so great quality wise, unfortunately. Always appears slightly pixelated and a but blurry on the sides. Hero 10 is definitely better. The audio was fine though. As for the "bonus lap" - god damn that was a gnarly ride, and was truly a great watch!

Hey I'm 6'9" and I'm curious what size bike I should get. Everything I try feels like I'm riding a kid's bike as an adult. Not just the size of the wheels but the pedals and the crank too. It's like I can't get full power and motion in my legs. The rotation feels small. Maybe I'm just crazy since I haven't done much riding since I was a kid in elementary school. It could be I just need to get used to it. I was big then but obviously not as big as I am now.

For an intermediate - at best - rider like me, I found that unnerving. Really cool to see you blast through it like it was nothing. But good grief man, that bonus lap! Which trail was that? I actually heard a rumour a couple of days ago on Dale’s Strava feed that you got one so I went to check it out online. Looks really nice! Is the benefit of the mullet setup significant?
It's one of the trails unmarked beside CBC there's a few of them. They are super knarly when wet. The roots send you all over the place best to just aim for the lowest rutt and hope for the best🤣
The sound is not as crisp as before and alot more wind noise, the angle is cool but its blurry and not as sharp. I liked the gopro setup better, but maybe this only needs som tweaking!
I much prefer this camera for showing off the trail, but it tells lacking in so,e other area, can’t quite put my finger on it though, and the audio is slightly worse

Sounds like motion blur to me. 60 fps should solve that. Dale Stone's videos are the pinacle of quality from the Canadian group of mountain bikers.

The amount if trail work done is crazy, has to me 1000s of man-hours. You made the trail look very easy!
