    I don't understand any discussion about picture profile numbers. Those 9 PPs are simply slots to store setting like gamma, black gamma, color mode, color space, etc. Labeling the shots with PP1 to 9 nothing tells us about the settings, except in the case you didn't change Sonys default=example settings, e.g. PP9=factory preset S-Log3/S-Gamut3.

    I use PP8/Cine 4. Gives a flat image and a lot of flexibility in post.

      Christopher Burress Depends on what program you're using. You can either use a LUT and adjust from there, or do from scratch. Don't just throw a LUT on an leave it how it is. It's not for everything universally. If you're new, just work in Premiere and get the hang of it. SpeedGrade is nice too. And try using a Color Checker when shooting so you can see what you're doing easier in post.

    I'd honestly reshoot this video. You threw LUTs on top of non-SLOG footage. While that can theoretically work if you go back and properly grade, it's generally not helpful for regular picture profiles. It tends to harm the image rather than show what it can do. The only truly great way to handle non-LOG footage is to grade from scratch. And really that also applies to LOG in a lot of cases

    • @ChristopherBurress
      @ChristopherBurress  7 років тому +2

      So I looked deeper into it after reading your comment. I didn't realize that the picture profiles were basically just preset holders that have been set to some random defaults. It turns out that the picture profiles 7, 8, & 9 were S-log 2, 3, & 3 respectively by default. What is the point of using a picture profile set to a non-LOG setting if it flattens out the image so much and color grading isn't intended for it?

    • @KayBeeJay
      @KayBeeJay 7 років тому +18

      Christopher Burress Christopher Burress Sorry maybe I didn't go into enough detail. SLOG is pretty much used exclusively outdoors for slightly more dynamic range. You generally overexpose a stop or two in-camera and the image appears very flat and bright until you grade it in post. People often apply a LUT to overexposed SLOG footage because it quickly brings contrast, saturation, blacks, etc. back into the image. After SLOG has received a LUT and/or been carefully graded, you often get more dynamic range than you would had you shot a regular picture profile. Yet the trade off is usually either more noise or less true black colors. You don't shoot SLOG indoors because there isn't usually enough light or differences in dynamic range indoors. And if you shoot SLOG indoors and try to use a LUT or grade it, it's going to be a noisy mess.
      Color grading is intended for both non-LOG and LOG picture profiles. The difference is usually that some people feel like they have to do less work when they properly overexpose outdoor SLOG footage and apply a LUT in post. But in reality both types should require the same degree of care in color grading. The other take-away is that SLOG can theoretically give you more grading options in post. Because it's shot flat the colors aren't baked-in as much as a standard profile. Therefore you can theoretically do more tweaking. But honestly a lot of the regular profiles look great and require very little touch up. LOG tends to be more pain than it's worth

      Burton Brother Productions thanks for the info. I'll have to do some thorough research and do a follow up video. I'm relatively new to videography and there is a lot more to learn than is initially apparent.

      @mbaksa 7 років тому +4

      S-Log 2 should only be used if there is a real need for it because it will hurt tonality and colors (and it is harder to expose for - frame needs to be a bit overexposed if one does not want to get noisy video). S-Log 3 is an extreme version that should only be used in extreme conditions (where S-Log 2 isn't enough, and one really needs all the dynamic range). It is very hard to manually (without a LUT) color-correct S-Log 3 footage. For most uses one of Cine gamas should be perfectly OK - they give more dynamic range than no picture profile with contrast set to minimum, and are easy to work with.

    • @dukebozikowski3801
      @dukebozikowski3801 5 років тому

      I honestly disagree quite a bit because when you're grading LOG footage you're essentially trying to get it back to Rec709 through color correction. Then you can use LUTs to color grade the look you want. You are also breaking apart your image more when grading LOG as you have to color grade the footage (with the same bitrate) more in order to get the look you were going for. This is why so many people are shooting in profiles like cine2 and cine4 which are less flat and don't break down as quickly in the grade. I still like log but I think most people should avoid it unless they absolutely need the extra dynamic range due to the less robust image for editing. I ant wait for the Sony cameras to get 10 bit because then the log footage won't fall apart as quickly :)

    PP8 CIne4 is the way to go. As for grading, learn some S curve exposure tricks and mess with the gamma in post. Phantom is for crazy slo mo shots usually.

    I like the PP1 best then PP4. I have noticed that if you shoot in SLog and grade it later the image quality is degraded. Best to have the right profile and run with that for maximum IQ.

    • @ChristopherBurress
      @ChristopherBurress  7 місяців тому +1

      You want to avoid picture profiles with photos generally. If you shoot jpeg then you will be limited in post production and these “edits” will be baked into them making them even harder to edit after. You can set to record raw photos in any mode and these profiles will not be applied and you will have the most flexibility to edit.

      I did a little looking around and it seems to be a picture profile you can purchase and it gives your footage a canon-like look to it. (I didn't know that was desirable?) it's like 15 bucks and people rave about it. I'm not enough of a colorist to be that interested.

    • @Gershy13
      @Gershy13 7 років тому

      well the canon colors from its standard profile is really natural and nice. however im sure it cant be that hard to do manually... and for $15 is it really worth it? I just wanna know how to make my clips look normal...

    what the fuck man log-c luts one slog footage!! what are you doing? tip, go to Sonys website and download the official Slog-rec.709 lut!

    • @ChristopherBurress
      @ChristopherBurress  7 років тому

      Explain the first part of your comment?

    • @olleolsson4447
      @olleolsson4447 7 років тому

      When you applying luts on slog footage the input of the lut needs to be slog. Otherwise you totally screw up the color transformation! A slog to rec.709 lut transform the color space from slog to rec.709. rec.709 is the color space that TVs are showing from the web like UA-cam sRGB is the proper color space! I´m definitely not an expert but you need to read a bit more about color theory! sorry but it will take time to understand color theory, I´m struggling with that now!

    • @ChristopherBurress
      @ChristopherBurress  7 років тому

      Interesting, and I definitely need to do more research. I thought that the colors of pp4-6 looked pretty good throughout the video (with exceptions of course) and those were not slog. On the other hand pp7-9 were all slog and, while I understand a LUT is a starting point for color grading, I don't think those looked even close to recoverable throughout the footage. I don't understand the nuance of the applied LUT, and I'll have to go to sonys website and download the LUT you mentioned to see what it does. Is there a science to it or is it all pretty much trial and error with the color grading?

    • @olleolsson4447
      @olleolsson4447 7 років тому

      The Slog-rec.709 lut is definately not a stylish lut but the math behind the color are going to be right! after the Slog-rec.709 you can add something more stylish like the rec.709-M31 (M31 is a lut from visoncolor) If your are intrested and have the time I recomend that you start grading in Davinci Resolve. It´s easier to understand color that way!
