Great video! Another hack is that you can install apps to it, basically it's running a modified version of Android and there is a way to install custom apps that are not accessible in the camera's store. For example I wanted to install the time lapse app from Sony but since I don't live in the u.s. The App Store did not let me buy it. So after some research I found out you can install custom apps. So there is a time lapse app which lets you take time lapses in photo mode with silent shooting!
I just picked up a Sony 6500. Thanks for those great little hidden features, Dunna. For the focus tap zoom in feature you can actually set a time for when it jumps back out to regular view. This way you don't have to double tap again.
Yes I think it even defaults to this feature but I disabled it for fear of smashing my camera for ever time it snapped back out when I was trying to focus haha! Thanks for watching Borgi!
That was how I originally set it up too! Lately, it’s S&Q on one, 120fps on the other, and then I spend 90% of my time in manual mode and I just make sure I’m on 24fps there.
It’s still a higher bit rate than the video that the a6000 shoots and I was happy to post the videos I created with that camera, so for the convenience it affords me, I still like it. It depends on the situation though, if it’s something that I ABSOLUTELY need to have top quality and crazy editing capability, I’ll shoot a raw photo timelapse. But there are lots of situations where that process is cumbersome and not really necessary. For example, you can shoot a quick timelapse on your phone and it can be more than useable for a vlog or something like that.
My memory recall is slow, whenever i switch the dial 1 and 2, it pop up the setting information, this wasted few seconds where i can't start shooting instantly.
Ea Ea Studio - interesting, I don’t switch modes often but I haven’t noticed them taking a lot of time. I’ll have to pay attention to this from now on.
I've been watching quite a few of your videos over the past few days, and you're honestly one of my favorite camera/photography/editing channels. You're so positive and informative, I love it!
Fantastic work as always! My favorite camera hack currently is white balancing for tungsten light and using those lights as practicals in daylight scenes. It looks so naturally beautiful.
Cool! I think I get what you’re saying but can you explain a bit more? Balance the camera for tungsten so instead of looking orange, the tungsten lights look daylight and the daylight looks more blue? Or balance for daylight so that the daylight looks natural and the tungsten has that warm orange glow?
Although not a Sony user, but its good to learn a new thing! Who knows, maybe one day i’ll make the switch and these features here are impressive indeed! Keep it up bro ;)
Oh wow! Didn’t know about touch screen functionality in Manual mode. And I have my a6500 for over the year! Love all other tricks! Great tips!!! Dunna THANKS! Great videos
Well I never knew about tapping the screen for zooming in to focus. Thanks. I have c1 set to focus zoom but then trying to move the little orange square around to where I want to focus is a real PITA
Re: highlights - you need to expose for highlights in some situations, even if it means some of the other stuff is a bit dark because you're protecting them. Re: colours - not sure if you're referring to the "Sony colours" problem, but I fix that in post with some tweaking
Gotta say, this was good. Thanks for all the tips and tricks. I love my a6500 but definitely feel like I don't use it to it's potential. I mainly shoot action photography and often have a difficult time with autofocus but I do like the camera (and lenses) and am happy to learn more about hot to use it properly. Thanks again.
Thanks for all the great tips in one place. Yeah, I am a big fan of using the various memory slots. One hack I have heard of (but haven't started using) are these little rubber "dots" with adhesive on the bottom. You stick them on to whichever buttons you like so it is a little easier to feel and press the buttons. I will have to track them down myself because I really want one for the video record button. Thanks again.
That is a cool idea, I do feel like the buttons could be a bit more... tactile? ergonomic? I can't think of the word. But easier to find without looking haha. I've seen something like what you're talking about for the shutter button. But I could see it being really handy for the dumb record button like you said!
So I think they are called button bumps. The person who makes them also makes a few other unusual, inexpensive accessories for Sony cameras. I guess there are others besides button bumps though too.
Thanks Jimmy! I use a lot of third party motion graphic templates, pretty sure that’s what these titles were. Sometimes I build them myself but I’m usually too lazy 😉
Hey man! You're really cool, and I really mean it. You sorta remind me of me, if I were to become a vlogger hehe :) I just ordered the A6500 and love the way you explain things. Thanks
Dude. You can tell how much effort goes into these videos. And yet all he’s only got 7.5k subs! Sure, it’s a lot. But compared to what people consider a lot... it’s nothing. Keep pushing ;D you’ll get the subs you deserve soon
Wow thank you so much! Every single subscriber seems awesome to me! I’m so thankful for the growth I’ve been having and can’t wait to see where we can take this!!
Did you manage to save the S&Q in a Custom Button 1/2 ? It seems that it saves all my setting except the S&Q > when I hit RECORD, it starts a regular video recording :(
I'm new to the a6500 and I love the tip about setting the memory 1 & 2 modes. I'm trying to set them both, one for time-lapse, one for slow-mo, but each time I go to set one mode, it shows that the other mode is the same. How do I get them to be different? Sorry if this question isn't clear...I'm a total noob.
Hmmm yeah its a bit tough to know what to say. Basically, go to the movie setting, get all your settings where they should be... find memory 1/2 in your menu, and choose to save to the one you want. Then go to the S&Q (assuming you're using that for your timelapse) and do the same for the other setting spot. That should get you there hopefully!
Completely excellent. I had missed Eye focus in the centre dial. Also the double tap on the screen for enlarging that area in manual. And dumb enough I just could not work S and Q. Thumbs up and subscribe .
My favourite is the silent shooting tip which allows the seamless switching between video picture profile and RAW photo shooting w/o any effect. Bonus tip I personally came across which is handy I'd like to share with you is to set up the "Custom Key (PB)" to launch the Application List. I found this useful when I need to use my smartphone as a remote trigger. Further, I've arranged the "Smart Remote Control" app on the camera as the first app so when I need to use my phone to communicate with the camera I'm only 3 button clicks away! You should try it too, beats having to dig through the menu to find the Application List when you need it. Happy creating! 🤩
Great video you rock ! i have an a 6500 too but on 9:02 i noticed that i have only 25p and 30p in record setting i do not have 60p like you and also in Frame Rate mine stops at 60 fps please tell me why ?
For the AF / MF button hold trick, I assign custom button to AF-on / back button focus, then disable AF function in shutter button. So, only one button press whenever i want to AF, after release, it stays MF.
Hi ! Congrats on the videos. I loved the color you use ... What color setting of the camera do you use? And in the edition which color do you use? Greetings from Brazil :)
Hey Sabrina! I use the EOSHD custom cine2 profile usually and I custom color grade. I'll be doing a video on this in the future for sure! Thanks for watching!
Hey Dunna, it was a great video, all of the tipps are very useful. in fact i have written them down. I have one question, will the Eye auto focus work on video? i haven't tried it yet?
Hey man! Great video! A lot of these I can use with my a6300 too! Question for you; you mentioned you live stream with yours. Can you shoot a video explaining how you do that? That’d be sweet. Or maybe you already have one?
thanks for the tip with custom AF-S button! switching from nikon and its a real pain to lose the ability to fully control the lens yet be able to focus with shutter release button!
Absolutely! I own two and I absolutely love them. Pair it with some decent fast lenses and it’s very capable in low light without spending a fortune. Highly recommended
@@dunnadidit The reds are very much like the canon colour science to my eyes. Do you have a grading tutorial or something that I can look at ? :) And please consider doing one if you haven't already. Thank you!
Thanks! That's exactly what I've been trying to achieve! I don't have a video yet but it's definitely on my list because I get asked this a lot! I'm still playing around with it a ton so I wanna make sure if got something solid before I teach it! But hopefully soon!
Semi-hack/tip. Open the battery door and pull the lcd away from the camera body to buy yourself even more time before the overheat warning pops on. 🏆👍🏼
Great video! For some reason when I set up M1 or M2 for videos and I want to go back to Manual mode for photos. The ISO doesn’t allow me to go lower than 200. Do you know why? Thanks!
You can have more than just 2 settings on memory, it's 6!! 1 and 2 it's the fastest, but you can save more 4 and select or screen menu when you turn the dial to number 1or2.
Great tip! I actually recorded something about that but I fumbled all my words up in the video so I cut it out and figured it still made enough sense hahaha 😂 thanks for letting everyone know though!
Hey duna un tips en mirrorles si tiras en 1.4 y activas el manual shuter tienes más luminosidad y el desenfoque es más cremoso que usando el elecronic shuter
Thanks for this great informations! I'm planning to purchase this camera over a6400 because of IBIS because it removes micro jitters while on a gimbal right? And my only concern is the screen dimming issue and it's not fixed yet.. May I know any tip for fixing it or atleast improving it? Thank you
@@dunnadidit Thank you for replying ☺️ I'm planning to start filmmaking dream with the following kit. Suggest your opinion if you have time, it will mean a lot. Sony a6500 Sony 50mm F1.8 OSS Zhiyun Crane Plus Rode Videomic Is this a good starter kit?
Yeah that’s pretty solid. If you only have the 50mm it might be a bit limiting. I would suggest a more versatile zoom lens to start and then add primes on after. Maybe the 18-105 f4 or 16-70 f4
Tip #2 about clear image zoom... I followed the steps you show and set cust button 3 to zoom but when I'm in video mode I'm unable to zoom in as mentioned. It still has that button for iso modification. Can you specify what steps are needed to use that zoom function in video? I use a 16mm sigma so I'd love to be able to use that! Thank you!
Great video, thanks man. I wanted to ask you. I own my own production company and wanting to upgrade from my current cameras to 4k but within a budget. Do you think the A6500 will be able to handle what I want it to do. Mostly corporate work, events and so forth? Also are there add on's that can you know of that will make the ergonomic of it better? Thanks again for the video!
Hey Ryan! I think you could definitely do that kind of work with a6500s. And if you’re looking to rig it out a bit, check out smallrig products, they make all sorts of cages and handles and such for just that reason!
Hi from Switzerland Dunna ! Quick question regarding the A6500 for slow motions results in 4K. From your experiences with this camera and for the best results. Should it be better to : 1) Shoot in 1080p (120fps), speed down in Premier pro and upscal in 4K ? 2) Or shoot in 4K (30fps), speed down in Premier pro and keep the format source 4K for quality ? Thanks again for your videos and to keep continue to built this amazing Sony community ! Alex
Hey Alex! Honestly, this is something I’m still playing with. For a long time, I would shoot 4K but always edit and export in 1080 so that I didn’t have to upscale my slow motion clips. But lately, I’ve been doing a lot less slow motion and so I’ve been working with my regular footage in 4K start-to-finish. In a few cases, I shot 120fps and upscaled to 4K and I didn’t think it looked too bad. I don’t exactly have a definitive answer for you because I’m still playing with this but I would say that if you are using LOTS of 60fps or 120fps slow motion in your videos, just work and export in 1080p (downscaling any 4K footage you might have shot). But if you are only using a couple clips of slow motion and it’s only for UA-cam... I’d say upscaling is ok. Hope that helps!
@@dunnadidit Thanks a lot for your quick answer and all the info. I can see that is a tough topic :) and a future A7000 Sony 4K up to 60fps will solve this ! Maybe mixing 1080p slow mo and 4K normal speed in a final 4k export could be an alternative. Thanks again Dunna take care! Alex
When switching between vid & photo does the picture profile settings apply to to the 6400 as well? Not sure if they updated it with a fix to the problem you mentioned
The settings are still the same, although the way that I use it, it becomes a tool not a problem. Essentially, picture profiles can't be used when using silent shooting. But I don't want picture profiles in RAW photos anyway because they don't apply to the final image anyway so what I'm seeing on the screen wouldn't be accurate. So the silent shooting hack allows me to shoot photos with no PP but as soon as I hit the movie record button, my PP turns back on for the video. As far as I can tell, its the same on the a6400.
Great tips Dunna! Oh! And maybe in a TimeLapse, you want to record normal-speed audio (like room tone or ambient) to paste It in post, it'll give you some reallystic (that's the Word?) Impression on your footage!
Hi Dunna! Great video, especially the PP hack with the silent shooting option ! I have a question about the S&Q : did you manage to save the S&Q in a Custom Menu 1 or 2 ? It seems that it saves all my setting except the S&Q > when I hit RECORD on my selected menu 1 or 2, it starts a regular video recording instead of S&Q :(
Hi, what kind of external battery are you using? I clicked on the battery link in the description and it led me to a dummy battery. I'm interested in the external usb battery pack you showed in the video with the green light on it. Great video by the way!
Apostle Quan - 🤦🏻♂️ sorry, I thought this was another one of my videos where I talk about accessories and I mention batteries. That charger is from a company called pocket juice and I’m pretty sure I picked it up at a Staples, although I’ve heard good things from a company called ravpower for their portable chargers from amazon.
Hey man awesome video what device do you use to edit your video? i am going to buy a6300 this week and need a good laptop can you please suggest me good laptop for video editing budget is 1300USD.
Hey Abdul. I have a 2017 MacBook Pro. It’s probably a bit over your budget but I must admit I’m not sure what else is out there in the world of PC’s I’ve been a Mac guy for a long time.
I don’t know! I’ve been pondering this myself. I had an external monitor for a bit but I sold it because when you plug in a monitor, you lose the ability to use face tracking in 4K. So even though I can’t see myself when recording internally, I have confidence that the face tracking is working. But some of the features and functions of the ninja v are pretty awesome too.
That’s probably a lot of the issue, with 120fps you lose a decent amount of quality because it needs to cram so many frames inside the same but rate. I suggest trying to be more mindful of what you’re going to want to slow down and only shoot those in 120. Either that or switch to 60 so that it’s not quite as bad.
*What is your favorite camera hack, tip or feature that you think people should know about?*
All tips were great but I loved the time lapse tip the most!! 😄😄🔥
Super handy hey! I love that function too.

AF/MF Control Hold... Now that's a great tip that most people don;t know about
Juanx- That’s so true! I think there is an “app” that disables the recording limit as well
I just picked up a Sony 6500.
Memory recall is my jam! Got 4k 24fps and 1080 120fps set up and it's so handy.
That was how I originally set it up too! Lately, it’s S&Q on one, 120fps on the other, and then I spend 90% of my time in manual mode and I just make sure I’m on 24fps there.

I just bought this camera & 2 prime lenses. This video is just what I needed, especially because of that second tip. THANK YOU!
Dunna Did It balance tungsten light to nearly white with slight yellow, daylight looks very blue and it has a nice effect! 😊
That’s very cool! I do that sometimes too! Or the other way around.
Dunna Did It gotta do a video on things like that! ;)
Definitely going to do some lighting videos soon!
The use of the video picture profile while shooting photos was a great tip. Thanks!

You are probably in 4k mode. 60fps is only available in 1080p. Once you switch that, you should see 60(or maybe 50fps if you’re in Europe)
Those were some pretty good lookin people packing up that cube van!
Roadie/male models for sure!

Haha thanks so much for watching anyway! Who knows! Maybe you can find some of these functions on whatever camera you use!

For the AF / MF button hold trick,
I assign custom button to AF-on / back button focus, then disable AF function in shutter button.
So, only one button press whenever i want to AF, after release, it stays MF.
Classic trick! I never got into the back button focus but I might have to try again!

Hey Dunna, it was a great video, all of the tipps are very useful. in fact i have written them down. I have one question, will the Eye auto focus work on video? i haven't tried it yet?
Not in an a6500. The first camera for Sony to do that is the A7RIV
Stephen Nailed it! The only cameras in the Sony lineup that have that feature are the a7Riv, a6600, and a6100(i think)
What an awesome camera, defo gonna cop! :)
Nice!
People always forget to mention with clear zoom you have to disable raw and only have jpeg as the picture format or clear zoom will be greyed out.
Yeah I only ever really use Clear Image Zoom for video. If you are shooting raw, you can get the same effect as CIZ by just cropping in in post.
Well done sir. Some very useful tips here. Thanks. I appreciate it.
Thanks for watching Chris!

thanks for the tip with custom AF-S button! switching from nikon and its a real pain to lose the ability to fully control the lens yet be able to focus with shutter release button!
Yeah switching camera systems can definitely be tough! Glad my video helped a bit!
Dunna Did I didn’t mention that I got the 6500 a few months ago so will benefit from past videos for sure. Thanks for the welcome!
That’s great Kim! I hope you enjoy the videos!
Is it worth buying? I’m interested on neon photography and low light , do you recommend it for me?
Absolutely! I own two and I absolutely love them. Pair it with some decent fast lenses and it’s very capable in low light without spending a fortune. Highly recommended
Are you using EOS HD for colour?
Really liked the look of this video.
Yes I am! But it's also in a few tricks I have in color grading 😉
@@dunnadidit The reds are very much like the canon colour science to my eyes. Do you have a grading tutorial or something that I can look at ? :)
And please consider doing one if you haven't already.
Thank you!
Thanks! That's exactly what I've been trying to achieve! I don't have a video yet but it's definitely on my list because I get asked this a lot! I'm still playing around with it a ton so I wanna make sure if got something solid before I teach it! But hopefully soon!
i liked seeing this video footage. keep going 🤙
Thanks so much!
Thank you for the tips
Thanks 🙏
wayment! you dunna did it! Thanks for these tips!
Thanks so much! I’m glad you liked it!!
Semi-hack/tip. Open the battery door and pull the lcd away from the camera body to buy yourself even more time before the overheat warning pops on. 🏆👍🏼
Definitely a great tip!!
Great video!
For some reason when I set up M1 or M2 for videos and I want to go back to Manual mode for photos. The ISO doesn’t allow me to go lower than 200. Do you know why? Thanks!
thank you 🙏
Glad you liked it Hafiz! Thanks for the support!
Another great video !
Thanks Emad!!
Dunna Did It you’re going to be the next big thing within this space - I can see it
You’re too kind!! Thank you!
Dunna Did It Thank you for amazing tips!
No problem! Glad you enjoyed!
very useful! good job.
Thanks! I’m glad you think so!
You are welcome, keep up the good work.

Hey duna un tips en mirrorles si tiras en 1.4 y activas el manual shuter tienes más luminosidad y el desenfoque es más cremoso que usando el elecronic shuter
Thanks for the tips dude! Some good ones in there
My pleasure!
Thanks for this great informations! I'm planning to purchase this camera over a6400 because of IBIS because it removes micro jitters while on a gimbal right? And my only concern is the screen dimming issue and it's not fixed yet.. May I know any tip for fixing it or atleast improving it?
Thank you
Unfortunately there’s not much you can do other than use an external monitor. But you do get used to it after a while.
@@dunnadidit Thank you for replying ☺️
I'm planning to start filmmaking dream with the following kit. Suggest your opinion if you have time, it will mean a lot.
Sony a6500
Sony 50mm F1.8 OSS
Zhiyun Crane Plus
Rode Videomic
Is this a good starter kit?
Yeah that’s pretty solid. If you only have the 50mm it might be a bit limiting. I would suggest a more versatile zoom lens to start and then add primes on after. Maybe the 18-105 f4 or 16-70 f4
@@dunnadidit Thank you so much. I'll consider 18-105mm.
My pleasure!!
Thank you!
Great video thank you a lot
Thanks so much for watching!
i've been here since day 1, and I'm surprised how you got 47k subscribers just in the last year. WOW
Thanks for sticking around since the start!
@@dunnadidit Thank man. Appreciate the advice and quick response.
My pleasure Ryan!
Hi from Switzerland Dunna ! Quick question regarding the A6500 for slow motions results in 4K. From your experiences with this camera and for the best results. Should it be better to :
1) Shoot in 1080p (120fps), speed down in Premier pro and upscal in 4K ?
Alex
My pleasure Alex! Thanks for the question!
I’ve set C3(trash) as a button to change Picture Profiles quickly but yea, memory recall is great for setting 4K mode and 120fps mode at the ready.
That’s awesome! My C3 is currently Clear Image Zoom but I’m still changing it often.
As far as I can tell, its the same on the a6400.
good video thanks
Thanks for watching!!
Great tips Dunna! Oh! And maybe in a TimeLapse, you want to record normal-speed audio (like room tone or ambient) to paste It in post, it'll give you some reallystic (that's the Word?) Impression on your footage!
That’s a great idea, I always carry a little field recorder for things like this!
Hi Dunna! Great video, especially the PP hack with the silent shooting option ! I have a question about the S&Q : did you manage to save the S&Q in a Custom Menu 1 or 2 ? It seems that it saves all my setting except the S&Q > when I hit RECORD on my selected menu 1 or 2, it starts a regular video recording instead of S&Q :(
Yeah I was definitely able to save my S&Q settings into a memory mode. That sounds like something must be missing 🤔
@@dunnadidit I finally found what I was doing wrong ! Thank you so much for you work !
Hi, what kind of external battery are you using? I clicked on the battery link in the description and it led me to a dummy battery. I'm interested in the external usb battery pack you showed in the video with the green light on it. Great video by the way!
Oh that’s so weird! I’ll see if I can update the link. It should be to two extra batteries with a charger.
I'm talking about what you're holding in your hand at 4:01 not the two batteries with the charger.@@dunnadidit
Thanks!!!@@dunnadidit
My pleasure!
how do you tap to focus at 5:42? i don't see the green square when i tap on the screen
You have to be in photo mode and be selected on one of the “spot” autofocus modes. If you’re in autofocus wide, it might not be working.
@@dunnadidit ahh gotcha thanks! I'll try that
Hope that helps!
@@dunnadidit Thanks for the advice appreciate it.
No problem! Sorry I’m not a huge help in that area 🤷🏻♂️
@@AbdulAziz-rc4nk how about a dell xps 9550 or 9560

@@dunnadidit Has a filmmaker and new sony owners I'm really thankful for all your videos, love your work and your passion. Keep going 💪
So great to hear that!!
Could you do this for the Sony a6000 too?
Unfortunately I sold my a6000 recently, but I may have to hunt one down for this idea! Thanks for sharing it!
Thank for your tips!! Should i get atomos ninja v for 4k with sony a6500 ?
I don’t know! I’ve been pondering this myself. I had an external monitor for a bit but I sold it because when you plug in a monitor, you lose the ability to use face tracking in 4K. So even though I can’t see myself when recording internally, I have confidence that the face tracking is working. But some of the features and functions of the ninja v are pretty awesome too.
Any hack on how to get sharper video. I just got mine a few weeks ago and I notice that my videos aren't as sharp as I expected.
Hmm very interesting. What settings are you shooting on? Using 4K 100mbps 24 FPS?
Dunna Did It I use 1080 at 120fps.
Do you use that just for slow motion or for everything?
Dunna Did It For most of the time, i like to have the option to slow down.
