- The Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation's Douglas C-54 (DC-4) Skymaster "Spirit of Freedom" takes off and performs flybys during the 2019 America's Freedom Fest airshow in Goshen, Indiana. Watch for the aircraft to recreate a "candy bombing" from the Berlin Airlift by throwing a hundred candy bars out of the hatch!

A wonderful display of one of the most memorable and greatest humanitarian missions in the history of the USAF, Operation Little Vittles led by Col. Gail Halvorsen, a man who has such a kind heart, and by the end of Little Vittles over 23 tons of candy and over 1/4 million handkerchief parachutes had been dropped, unbelievable as it may be 18 of those 23 tons of candy came from the town of Chicopee, Massachusetts!
Nothin like taking a box of Nerds to the face at 147 Knots!
Nice to see a C-54. In the 60s I flew on one from Syracuse Hancock to Langley AFB on an ROTC trip. One thing not mentioned was the pole used to hold the tail up on tie-down.
While working for Aero Union Corporation in 1984 on a former Air Force C 54, I was amazed to find black dust on the underside of "U" channel stringers in the aft lower cargo pit- coal dust left over from the bagged coal it carried into Berlin during the air lift. Like touching a bit of history.
The whole time Consuela is vacuuming like crazy somewhere in the background!
That’s funny!
"Ach du lieber, mein schatz"! To me, the "aesthetic beauty" of a plane is EVERYTHING! This is one of the most "beautifully proportioned" planes of all times! No part stands out from the overall beauty of its design but every part complements each other! What great designers/engineers there were way back when! They cared about beauty besides functuality!!! "Gesundheit"!
That is also true of the Constellation in my view. One of my old time favorites.
The Berlin Candy Bomber turned 100 this year!
Awesome, C-54 Skymaster, Like...
Handsome for an old plane.
Does candy taste better when dropped out of a aircraft? Answer YES!
As an 8 year old Navy dependent kid living in Argentia NFLD I used to fly between there and NY (Floyd Bennett) with a load of lobsters to exchange for real produce. On one flight the number 2 engine caught fire and we had to land at Quonset Point RI for replacement then back to Argentia in time for breakfast. I was always told they could fly safely on two. The commander and piolet of that flight was CDR Rich Daily who lived in the same building we lived in. Thanks for sharing! Great bird!
Respect from Romania!
The drop thing was a flop but a really nice flying C-54 military and DC-6 commercial. Either way a very cool aircraft.
I saw this plane at Joint Base Andrews earlier this year. It was only a static display though.
Maybe film the candy landing……????…….maybe?
thankyou
Turbines?!! Should not be allowed..
That was one smooth landing!
I get to see Spirit of Freedom at Biggin Hill to celebrate the anniversary of the Berlin Airlift a long time ago.
Beautiful old lady.
The C-54 is currently in Waynesburg Pennsylvania. It will be Open for public tours August 17th and 18th. It will perform a Candy Drop on Sunday August 18th.
12 children were injured yesterday at the air show when a plane dropped candies for them - to simulate the Berlin Airlift.
Unfortunately, the pilot forgot to attach little parachutes on the chocolate bars. He also had frozen them before hand for fear that they would turn bad in the summer heat.
However, they were still hard as ice when the showtime came up.
Consequently, he dropped the 100, frozen chocolate bars to the waiting children. And they ended up smashing into their little heads and causing severe bruising and several, mild concussions.
The good news is - all of the children will eventually be fine.
The bad news is next years 'toy drop' and 'furniture drop' have been cancelled on legal grounds.

Interesting lineup of helicopters there; a Cobra, two Hueys and a Blackhawk.
