We flew on one of these, the "Aalsmeer" on 12th December 1951 from Schiphol to Kingsford-Smith airport, Sydney Australia. The journey took five days stopping at Rome, Damascus(overnight), Dhahran, Saudi Arabia(refuel), Karachi (overnight), Calcutta (overnight), Singapore(o/night), Darwin(o/night) then 8 hours to Sydney. There were 9 crew members and it cruises at around 300kph, according to mum's diary. I was * years old and remember the trip quite well.
I flew a number of times in South African Airways DC-4's, and a couple of times in Suidwes Lugdiens DC-4 in what is now Namibia. The reg ZS-NUR doesn't look like and SAA registration. Who owned that plane before?
Between DC 3 and DC 4 the landing gears of DC 4 are close to the modern day Boeing 737s appearance and arrangement. The cabin of DC 4 must have been quieter than the present day passenger jet cabins.
Beautiful Plane ❤
The sound of the engines so beautiful. Iv worked on DC4 for many years
That's not an airplane. That's a majestic work of functioning art !

I flew on an Aeronaves de Mexico DC-4 from NY to Mexico City in 1958 !! What a classic plane.
ZS-AUA is ger registration now. I found out she's in storage waiting for new engines. Buffalo Airways has a bunch of these sitting.

My grandad flew these aircraft for KLM. His name was Captain Jack Wilson.
How long did KLM fly the DC-4?
