- Thinking about buying the Firewire Sunday by Rob Machado?
My Machado Sunday review has everything you need to know about picking the right size, the right fin setup and of course how it handles in the surf!
The Machado Sunday is the latest in a run of epic boards by Firewire and Rob Machado - which inc the Go Fish, Seaside, Seaside & Beyond and Glazer.
But the Firewire Sunday is a bit of an enigma - running from 5'6 through to 7'3 and with options for twin fins, single fins and 2+1 setups it can be difficult to figure out what setup you ultimately want to go for!
I've put the 6'8 option through its paces over the last few weeks in a variety of conditions, testing out all the fin setups to see what works best - so hopefully you can spend less time figuring it out, and more time surfing it!

Thinking about taking my 6"8" to Costa Rica end of August. Anticipating strong fat rollers, but want to be prepped if it gets hollow. Probably head high maybe a foot over/under, thoughts??
@@christopherhardwick2317 if it's clean and rolling I'd say it'll be an awesome option, personally I wasn't a fan on hollower conditions on the mid length sizing - so if you can bring a second board with you'd I'd cover both bases!

The swell in Venice/Santa Monica was down to 1.5-2ft, and my other boards (a 5-11" HyptoCrypto and a 5-10" Machado Seaside) were just too small for it, so I picked up a 7-3" Machado Sunday and DAMN - this board is GREAT. It paddles into everything so easily - it moves smoothly and quickly, and it feels sorta like a longboard in its ability to stay with smaller, slower waves, without feeling ridiculously clunky. If you're looking for a mid-length board, this is a fantastic option. I'm riding it with a twin-fin setup using the Machado Keel fins, and I'm absolutely loving it. My friend who was out on a soft top asked to try it and said "wow, you get what you pay for" - he was able to catch twice as many waves on this thing. Very happy with this purchase.

I was hoping you can help me decide on my next board. I’m looking for a board to progress on, practice turns and preferably be able to go out on mushy days as il take anything when I can. So I want something manoeuvrable but also don’t think I’m ready for anything lower than 41liters. I’m 5’8 and 58kg. Have considered the seaside as a 6’6 but then Sunday also sounds good😮I have never surfed a quad though like the seaside. So yeh super overwhelmed with all the options but really keen for something I can grow with but also not struggle too much in the paddling department. Usually go out anything from knee to shoulder /over head . Really hope you can help :) thank you so much !!
Glad you liked the review Veronika! I won't focus solely on the volume - it's a good guide but also the outline, rocker and style of board is super important too. In 6'6 the Seaside will be super chunky so personally I'd say that wouldn't be the best option for your weight and height. The Seaside & Beyond in 6'8 could be a solid shout, or the Sunday in a 6'6 or longer (I love the 7'3 option!) a good mid length would be a great tool for progression so check out my midlength guide for a few options too!
excellent review. I have the 6'0 and the 6'8. The 6' works with way more performance than I expected so I'm super happy with it. The 6'8 is more of a fun board for me. but it too works well with the right fins. I am now running it as a 1+2. I'm using a 6" center fin with 4" side bites. Feels like a thruster in this set up.
I would love to get my hands on the 5'6 just to test and have a good opinion of their entire line up. Can't wait to see what Rob comes up with next.

Haven’t tested a thruster style setup yet, interesting style combo though, why did you prefer that over twin?
I’m very tempted by a shorted model too - have you noticed enough difference between the 6’0 and the 6’8 to warrant both in your quiver?
@@StokedForTravel I liked the Twin Keel as it had a ton of drive. But I had difficulty on my backhand. So when I went with a more upright twin side fin I added the stabilizer so that it wouldn't do the twinnie things that I don't like off the top maneuver. It works really well, surprisingly well.
As for the difference between the 6' and 6'8, yes, heaps difference. 8" makes it a completely different board, not to mention the extra 10 L. For me, the 6'8 feels like a proper mid-length, not the purist type but a proper modern fun board.
I will post my videos of the 6'8 soon. I liked the 6'0 as a twin and a 2+1 (twin + stabilizer) but I like the 6'8 as a 1 +2 (Single with side bites). who know, maybe I'll like the 6'8 as a straight single too. I hated the 6' as a single, viscerally hated.

Great review , I have the 5’6” love it , in small chest high, I got the machado kneel , and was kind of tight for me then I got the marlins from NVS , and was much better , now I have the aipa ahi twin fins from NVS and I love it !!! Very loose , and right in the pocket !!!

@@StokedForTravel yes it does with the right fins , on bigger waves I used a stabilizer with the aipa twin fins … it’s a fun board for sure

I would ask your perspective about a choice I m struggling .. my next board
I’m shortboarder since 20 years i mediterran sea and I see the ocean almost a time a year ( mostly Atlantic Ocean , but I had good time in Bali, Maldive, California etc) .
I’m 45 yrs 73 kgs 1,70m fit and in good shape ( I practice bodyweight workout)
My quiver is composed by Midas FireWire 27,3 liters for good days or steeper/hollow waves ( 2 liters more sometimes could be better :-) )
5’6 new Barcelona Bradley as groveler for mushy small day ( often)
A new custom 7’9 single fin middle length
Soft board for summer
I was ready to buy the d2 in 5’9 31’liters to ensure good coverage in good days and sometimes if not too mushy to get it.
But recently I saw the Sunday in6’0 which is a good option but i’m not able to understand if this success is due to board usability or the hype behind it .
Typically my waves are point break whose waves are short ( no way 100metrs of wall here) . So it’s a no sense to be used as single .
Said that, what’s your point of view?

Personally I prefer the Dominator 2 over the Sunday and I’d say for what you’re looking at surfing it’s going to be the better fit and it’ll suit a larger variety of waves for you too. You can always ride it as a twinny with a trailer as well, which is a fun, loose option on smaller days around shoulder high 🤙

Anytime! Hmmm volume wise it’s a tough one - I’d say 5’9 would work for you though and sit nicely between your daily and your grovellor. Honestly though I wouldn’t be surprised if it became your go to 🤣

Glad you like it Karl! I’ve been trying to find a way to get some footage in there as well, but to be honest as much as I’m a competent surfer, I really don’t think it would add much! No board is really going to magically change your level of surfing, it’s more about how it feels underfoot I think 🤙

Glad you enjoyed it! So I’ve actually done a video updated on my Sunday sizing as I ended up with one of the longer 7’2 models which I absolutely loved! It really depends what you’re after though, I really liked the extra length and flow of the 7+ option but dropping down to 6’4 will give you a bit more performance and shortboard feel, especially if you’re going twin fin

@@jacopo1532 I was actually just discussing that this week with a friend! Personally the HI4 longboard, Ova and Mashup are stand outs for me at the moment, but the Mid 6 and Too Fish are also super fun too! It's a tough one! Depends on where you're surfing too!
Have you tried it with more upright twin fins? I bought a pair but only surfed it once but it felt better than keels to me
Can't say I've tested any upright twins on it at the moment. Could work well on the shorter models but I feel like the mid-length options need the extra fin area for stability and flow
Curious if you’d tried this out with a more upright fin like the MRs or Asher Paceys?
I haven’t tried that myself but would certainly loosen things up heaps for some more top to bottom style surfing. I think the new Machado twin fin would be epic in it too 🤙
@@StokedForTravel I’ve been running my MRs in my seaside lately and it makes it feel like such a different board. It’s definitely got me wanting to get a dedicated twin. Some of those Album boards look hella fun.
@@brentontaylor9191 twin fins are certainly heaps of fun and I've heard a lot of good things about the Seaside as a twinny. The Too Fish is also one of my faves at the moment. Albums are pretty epic as performance twin fins but I can't say I rated their customer service and wait times!
If you only bought one, would it be the Seaside and Beyond or Sunday?
For me it would be the Seaside and Beyond - mainly because it has a bigger range of conditions and I’ve been loving it in bigger surf!
@@StokedForTravel that's helpful as I won't buy both. This is purely for small days and maybe the odd bigger day when I am too lazy to paddle my other boards.
@@terenceingram7786 it also comes down to how you want to surf it and what waves you're surfing. Sundays is cruisey and fun, the Seaside and Beyond is a bit more fast and exciting! Overall though the S&B is my fave!

It’s good fun, but I have to admit I prefer the Seaside and Beyond as my go to mid length, mainly because I feel like it handles a bigger variety of conditions - especially bigger stuff 🤙

6'8 Sunday vs 6'8 Seaside and Beyond?
Tough call! Personally the seaside and beyond is my favourite out of the two, but it really comes down to how you went to surf it. Sunday is much more cruisey, seaside and beyond is more performance and speed 🤙

might seem repetitive but it would be nice if in all your reviews you started off with your Height, weight, age in both mm and pounds inches. cool video just a suggestion

The kookiest thing I heard #1 who the hell puts a board under their arm to see how it feels n then makes decisions based on that lol brooo nooooo #2 you put an almost 8 inch single fin on a 6’8 board... word of advice one inch per foot of board length. That 8.5 inch fin belongs on a 9 foot board buddy... do better #3 you ride a 6’8 your 6 foot 85kg why the hell do you have 48 liters of foam ? You trying to progress ? Well with 48 liters you will not feel any “spice” lol cool review just check your language my man
Geez 6 negative comments in 15 mins across 3 videos, must be a bored day on the internet for Martov. In response though;
1) you can actually tell a lot from that, feel out the outline, wide point, weighting etc. Obviously dims and surfing it are the key, but it’s worth feeling the board out too
2) yes I’m aware that fin was waaaaay too big. It’s the only fin I had in my car when I swapped it over. And usually it’s on a 9 foot log. Just thought I’d include it so people didn’t oversize it and as an added bit of honesty
3) I was riding it as a mid-length, therefore it has to be longer with more foam! I’ve surfed some really fun mid-lengths that felt great underfoot as singles or 2+1, but this wasn’t one of them.
