  • HTC officially unveiled its next consumer-focused headset at CES 2023 today. Called Vive XR Elite, the standalone mixed reality device boasts a feature set that positions HTC to go toe-to-toe with Meta's Quest Pro, but at a notably cheaper price of $1,100. Oh great, a $1400 enterprise headset for professional use cases. Just what we needed.

      Confirmed to be $1,100 instead

@@LunarStarShip1 Still too expensive for consumer VR. It's got to be £500 or less.

@@saturnking77 depends on the consumer. PC gamers readily spend 3000+ for top line rigs. This is 1/3 of that.
I have a quest 2 but it's kinda shitty. I'd gladly pay for this upgrade and sell my quest.

it's not a consumer device its closer to an enthusiast device, the valve index is currently the premier PCVR gaming headset and costs $1k, the quest 2 ruined expectation for a large portion of the market due to a lot of people thinking that was the price for this hardware when that headset has been and continues to be sold at a loss when in reality the Quest 2 is worth closer to 600-700. the XR Elite is not meant to be consumed, hence the name being "elite" it's for a different group

@@Xener09 The Quest 2 is not "kinda shitty". For the price, and it being standalone, it's an incredibly capable little device that's brought a ton of new people into VR.
Obviously it can't compare to PCVR, that's nor fair.

Personally waiting for the Index 2. Wonna see what Valve is coming up with, and how their games implement it.
With the reparability and availability of replacement parts that they've shown with the Steam Deck, I trust them more with enthusiast hardware than others now.
Plus, they price their stuff super low for what you're getting, to the point of barely making a profit.

There will never be an "Index 2", even Gabe himself said so. There are patent rumors of a separate Valve VR standalone called "Deckard", which is highly likely to just be the remnants of what became the steamdeck.
You should also know that Valve literally invented modern VR, in-house. Oculus and their team with palmer lucky came from valve labs. However, Valve is a software technology company, and just recently a hardware company. Valve has not and may never profit from hardware sales, their bread and butter are software sales in retail (steam), and commercial software solutions.
Don't hold your breath on more VR hardware from Valve besides a Steamdeck hardware update. The VR industry is starved of applications due to the marketshare with XR2 driven by one of the most evil and controversial companies to have ever existed. So it's pointless to compete in that industry right now.
Once Facebook finally faces the chopping block, we might see VR get a second chance at mainstream markets.

Now THIS looks good. Shame about the price. But loving the innovation. Now it's Apple's turn.

    • @evolicious

There is nothing innovative or good about this product, it's an extremely weak attempt at a Pico4 competitor. Apple doesn't even have a AR/XR/VR team (they all left in 2019), the news you are referring to is fake generated hype by the PR firm they hired. Apple doesn't even have a prototype. Which is why the "project" has been pushed back a year. They will most likely pay to use a XR2 base and design a case around it in 6 months or less. Unfortunately, Apple has no idea what they are doing, they do not have OpenXR/VR compatibility, none of their machines can run VR, and there is no software foundation to speak of.
Thinking Apple will have a viable VR/XR/AR product is like thinking HTC will make a great car. It's hilariously stupid.

$1,100 isnt expensive for XR glasses like this, yall just want cheap products but without paying for the R&D of moving the tech chains.

Save some money by not making it stand alone
