An eagerly awaited combination of a GWR Castle storming through The Golden Valley in glorious Autumn colours was to be the main event, however the weather had other plans and problems with service trains added to what turned out to be a frustrating day mixed with exceptional performance. We pick up the action on the Stoke Road Bridge where 5043 passes at 75mph after being delayed and held for a short time at Ashchurch with "catch-up" definitely on the mind of the crew. A quick dash over the hills to Frampton Mansell found the upper valley thick in stubborn fog. I have only included footage from the second camera at the crossing as my tunnel shot was a "write-off". There are surprisingly few long range open shots on the return route from Oxford but I found this spot between Bruern and Shipton Station. In the lovely afternoon light, the Autumn colours and general tranquility of the area really show but it was not to last especially as the tour was delayed again due to an incident with a service train (collision with a badger!) near Ascot-under Wychwood. However 5043 looks and sounds splendid in the fading light as the crew again work hard to make up for the 40 minute delay proving that there is really nothing like the sight and sound of a Castle in full flow!

It was still a fun day Ryan and nice to get out into the countryside. Unfortunately I couldn't risk a last shot at Old Hill with the late running. Alan

    Ooh, now even better. :D
As I said before, the first shot when she opens up and the second one where she comes charging out of the fog is spectacular.

Hi Jobe and thank you for your interesting question. I guess the answer is any A4 as history has proved, although thinking practically; 60163 Tornado, being virtually new and fitted with modern bearings and boiler, is probably going to be the fastest of todays surviving steam loco's. Alan

Hard to pick which was the best clip because they were all so good. Drama of the bridge, emerging from the mist...... and your location and panning in the last shot was great..... 5043 is not an engine noted for hanging around!!!! Hey, I'll have to watch it twice…☁☁☁☁☁⁘⁙⁙……Hᴜɢʜ….TU…..ツ

So you decided to come out to get Edgcumbe on its eagerly awaited run over the Cotswolds? Hence I spotted the suspected graffiti on my car later in the day, cheeky move you did hehehe! I think that day was mixing for all of us in terms of weather and timing. I discovered later that day that the service train delaying the Cotswold Line hit a badger near Ascot even though there no damage on the unit it still went though safety checks hence why 5043 was delayed

Earl of Mount Edgcumbe is truly the king of her castle. She loves working hard. However, an incident befell her for a first. A crack in one of her inside cylinders was discovered, and she was towed away to the nearest repair shop. Typical.
Mr. Alan Steamclips was frustrated when he heard about the incident. It couldn't be helped. Outside an old diesel depot, Mr. 47 was having troubles with a motor oil leak. What to do for a replacement? Angry Ollie and Tornado had seen everything and wanted to help. They had trains of their own to take care of, and neither could accommodate Edgcumbe's passengers as well as their own. The Brit and A1 conferred together and came up with a clever plan. A Shed Master telephoned Tyseley Steam Museum and got a helpful reply. Rood Ashton Hall wasn't doing anything much, so she volunteered to take Edgcumbe's train. Burton Agnes Hall was also in on the act.
"What the....?" Alan was surprised to see two Hall engines come his way out of the fog. At the end of it all, Earl of Mount Edgcumbe was thanking Burton Agnes and Rood Ashton Hall for taking her train.
"Don't thank us," smiled Burton Agnes Hall. "Angry Ollie and Tornado had the idea."
Alan went home, still not quite able to take in what he had seen. He was smiling in any case. At least the passengers had been saved from a boring situation. That was what mattered most.

Oh and an after thought..... wouldn't names like Stoke Orchard, Frampton Mansell, Shipton Under Whychwood, while seemingly beautiful, be enough - just in themselves - to have given someone like Dr Beeching a severe - if not fatal - attack of apoplexy (or some similar mid C20 disease)? …☁☁☁☁☁⁘⁙⁙……Hᴜɢʜ….TU…..ツ
