  • Vintage Trains Tour, 4965 Rood Ashton Hall + 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, Bristol -- Plymouth - Bristol.
Circumstances restricted my filming to two "Coombes" near to my home on this bright and very breezy spring day as an immaculately turned-out pair of "Swindons finest" glisten in the sunshine. First we look out over Coombe Cellars where 4965 piloting 5043 are seen heading up the Teign towards Newton Abbot just as a convenient gap in the clouds appears. Unfortunately, as is so often the case on this stretch of line, the train is pathed close behind a service train and is therefore coasting to "double-yellows" all the way up the estuary as I struggle to keep the camera steady in the very gusty conditions. For the return leg I opted for a difficult shot into the sun at a location I knew would deteriorate as the season progressed. High up above the hamlet of Coombe Fishacre there are uninterrupted views stretching from the South Hams to Haytor Rocks taking in the whole of southern Dartmoor. The pair are seen attacking the easier eastbound side of Dainton Bank with steam pressure lifting the safety valves on both engines as they hurry into the trees leaving us with those distinctive GWR sounds as they climb towards Dainton tunnel and the late Spring rushes to make up lost time..

What a superb video! Great to see those locomotives double heading at speed through beautiful countryside. The shot around the S curve was especially worth seeing.

Two superb shots of steam in the landscape/countryside. Lovely smooth panning and your second shot as they came sweeping round that S bend was great. All the best.

Great panning as always, Alan. And both engines blowing off climbing Dainton, can't be bad. Keith

Hi and thanks again Keith: It would have been more exciting to see them pulling more than 10 as either could have dealt with that load on their own..... but they did look nice! Alan

Hi Andrei: Thank you for your kind remarks. I don't think that anyone has posted a shot from there before, probably because of the NG wires and direction of the sun and later in the season the crops and trees in leaf get in the way. The distant views were stunning and I will certainly shoot from there again sometime. Alan
