- It was going to be very difficult to stray me away from seeing my favourite Jubilee put on a performance like this. Even the planned RMT strikes wouldn't prevent LMS Jubilee No. 45690 Leander travelling through the Golden Valley.
The strike did however result in this fairly routinely trip having a change of itinerary. With Worcester Shrub Hill station closed, the tour would instead head for Gloucester, travelling from Paddington via Didcot, Swindon and Kemble in both directions. The reduced services would also require the tour to make extra stops at Langley, Tilehurst and Cholsey, to give the passengers more joining options. The tour would also see a later start and much earlier finish, in order to get back to Paddington before the station was due to close. However, the reduced services allowed a much quicker run for the tour, with only one water stop in each direction.
With all that in mind, we begin at Pangbourne, where Leander is seen already putting on a great performance sound wise as she powers away from the pickup stop at Tilehurst. The next shot comes from Franklin Farms on the westbound climb to Sapperton tunnel, as the single chimney Jubilee roars her way up the 1 in 93 grade to the tunnel entrance located just behind us, making so much noise she drowned out the sound of her own whistle!!
For the return it was the bucket list shot of the eastbound side of Sapperton tunnel, overlooking the Golden Valley above the tunnel mouth. With her unassisted 10 coach load, and having taken the 1 in 75 climb from a standing start at Stroud, Leander takes on the climb through the valley in fine style with her thundering 3 cylinder beat echoing around. Despite there being a few showers earlier in the day and no other trains running on this line, she showed no sign of a struggle. A seriously top performance from the engine. Finally, after dropping passengers off at Cholsey, the tour is seen passing through Goring and Streatley on its return back to the capital.

Shows what Jubes can do when not held back by diesel trailers! Shame about the livery, but I daresay she'll revert to LMS crimson or Brunswick Green sooner or later!

Thanks Callum. She's been a personal favourite for ages, despite the fact I'd never actually seen her till that trip on Wednesday. It's a pity she couldn't stay longer, but she certainly gave me a performance to remember on this outing.
Top-class footage of the 'Jubilee' at work Thomas, a great variety of locations on show with some equally impressive displays from 'Leander'; she certainly gave Sapperton Bank a run for its money on the return! 👍 Funnily enough I too have longed for the chance to see & film 45690, but had never got the chance prior to this excursion. I saw the 'Jubilee' at Haresfield on the outward run as being situated just up from Standish Junction a good amount of thrash was, in theory, guaranteed. This line of thinking paid off & 'Leander' charged past with its regulator wide open; that 3-cylinder beat was a sound to behold.
