    Just done the belt on my dad's Transit Connect after watching this video - great video, very detailed, so thank you. However, I couldn't make out where the bleed screw on the thermostat housing is, will have another look tomorrow to bleed coolant system

    • @sanumotorswithcharlie
      @sanumotorswithcharlie  4 місяці тому

      I'm glad to hear that the video helped you with replacing the belt on your dad's Transit Connect! Bleeding the coolant system is an important step after performing such maintenance.
      The bleed screw on the thermostat housing is typically a small, usually brass or steel, screw located on or near the thermostat housing itself. It's used to release any trapped air in the cooling system to ensure proper circulation of coolant.
      Here are a few tips to help you locate the bleed screw:
      Consult the vehicle manual: The manual often provides detailed diagrams and instructions for locating components like the bleed screw.
      Check around the thermostat housing: The thermostat housing is usually connected to the upper radiator hose and can be found near the engine block. Look for a small screw protruding from the housing or nearby.
      Look for a small protrusion: The bleed screw may look like a small bolt or screw with a hexagonal or square head, often distinguishable from other components by its location and size.
      Use a flashlight: Sometimes, the bleed screw can be tucked away in a tight spot, so using a flashlight can help you locate it more easily.
      Refer to online resources: If you still have trouble finding it, you can search online for diagrams or forums related to your specific vehicle model. Other owners may have shared tips or images that can assist you.
      Once you've located the bleed screw, use caution when loosening it, as it's typically made of softer metal and can easily be damaged if too much force is applied. After bleeding the system, make sure to tighten the screw securely to prevent any leaks.

    Really helpful video. Did the job myself as a couple of garages weren't interested. Worst bit was unclipping the coolant tank. Also when trying to use the hole in the bell housing to lock the flywheel whilst tightening the crank pulley it turned out there was no corresponding hole in the flywheel! Never mind, got someone to jump on the brakes instead.

    had a quote from ford 1000+vat. (obvioulsy dealer garages are highest), and had a guy quote me 250 supplied and fitted. Is this a price a mobile mechanic would charge for this job? And if hes good, could he get the whole job done in 1-3 hours?

    • @sanumotorswithcharlie
      @sanumotorswithcharlie  Місяць тому

      A quote of £250 supplied and fitted for replacing the timing belt on your 2017 Ford Connect diesel by a mobile mechanic seems quite low but not impossible, especially if the mechanic is experienced and has lower overhead costs compared to a dealership. Here are a few considerations to help you evaluate this offer:
      ### Cost Breakdown and Comparison
      1. **Typical Costs**: Generally, the cost for parts (timing belt kit, water pump, auxiliary belt) can range from £100 to £220, depending on whether genuine parts or aftermarket parts are used. Labor can add another £150 to £300 based on the mechanic's rates and the complexity of the job
      2. **Mobile Mechanic Rates**: Mobile mechanics usually charge less than dealership garages because they have lower overheads. A quote of £250 might suggest the mechanic is using aftermarket parts and charging a reasonable labor rate.
      ### Job Duration
      1. **Time Required**: An experienced mechanic could indeed complete the timing belt replacement in about 2 to 3 hours. The job involves:
      - Removing the necessary components to access the timing belt.
      - Replacing the timing belt, water pump, and any associated components.
      - Reassembling everything and ensuring proper timing and operation.
      If the mechanic is well-versed with your vehicle model, they can efficiently complete the task within this timeframe
      ### Evaluating the Mechanic
      1. **Reputation and Reviews**: Check reviews or get references for the mechanic. Good reviews and recommendations can give you confidence in their work quality.
      2. **Warranty and Guarantees**: Ensure the mechanic offers some form of warranty on both parts and labor. This provides protection in case anything goes wrong post-repair.
      3. **Experience and Certification**: Verify the mechanic’s experience with similar jobs and whether they are certified or belong to any professional automotive organizations.
      ### Conclusion
      While £250 is on the lower end of the typical price range, it is feasible for a mobile mechanic to offer this rate. The key is ensuring that the mechanic is reputable, uses quality parts, and offers a warranty on their work. If these conditions are met, you can confidently proceed with the repair at a potentially significant cost saving compared to the dealership quote.

    • @sanumotorswithcharlie
      @sanumotorswithcharlie  4 місяці тому +1

      The 2016 Ford Transit Connect Mark 2 does not have a wet belt. It typically comes equipped with a timing chain rather than a timing belt. The timing chain is located within the engine and is lubricated by the engine's oil

    Hey I wonder if you can help I locked the cam and fuel pump with pins and un done the bottom pully went to lock it and its not in alignment is at approx 9 o'clock. Can I turn the bottom crank and then lock it before I put the new belt on ?.

    • @sanumotorswithcharlie
      @sanumotorswithcharlie  Місяць тому +1

      Hey, it sounds like you're working on the timing for your Transit Connect. If the bottom crank is not aligned after locking the cam and fuel pump, you can carefully turn the bottom crank to the correct position. Make sure it aligns properly before you install the new belt. Double-check your timing marks to ensure everything is in sync. It's crucial to have everything perfectly aligned to avoid engine damage. If you're unsure, consulting a service manual for your specific model or seeking professional advice might be a good idea. Good luck!
      Thank You

      @trimmxx2169 Місяць тому +1

      Thankyou for the reply yes its on the same model your doing it on. As I already locked the top off I think when I undone the bottom pulley it made the crankshaft pully skip a few teeth anti-clockwise that's why I'm guessing it's not aligned now. So turning it back clockwise and locking it should take it back to tdc?

    • @sanumotorswithcharlie
      @sanumotorswithcharlie  Місяць тому +1

      Yes, if the crankshaft pulley has indeed slipped a few teeth, turning it back clockwise to align it with the Top Dead Center (TDC) mark should restore the proper alignment. Here's a step-by-step guide to ensure you do this correctly:
      Ensure Safety: Make sure the vehicle is in park (automatic) or neutral (manual) and the parking brake is engaged. Disconnect the battery to avoid any accidental starts.
      Remove Necessary Components: Depending on your vehicle, you may need to remove the timing belt cover and other components to gain clear access to the crankshaft pulley.
      Locate TDC Mark: Identify the TDC mark on the crankshaft pulley and the corresponding mark on the engine block. There may also be marks on the camshaft pulleys.
      Rotate the Crankshaft: Using a suitable socket and ratchet or breaker bar, slowly rotate the crankshaft pulley clockwise until the TDC marks align. Be sure to turn the crankshaft slowly and smoothly to avoid any damage.
      Check Camshaft Alignment: Verify that the camshaft pulleys are also aligned with their respective timing marks. If the camshafts are not aligned, you may need to rotate the crankshaft another full turn (360 degrees) to bring the camshafts into alignment.
      Lock the Crankshaft: Once all the marks are aligned, you can use a locking tool to keep the crankshaft in place while you reassemble everything.
      Reassemble Components: Reinstall the timing belt, ensuring it is properly tensioned and all marks remain aligned. Reattach any components you removed to access the timing area.
      Double-Check Alignment: Rotate the crankshaft manually through at least two complete cycles and re-check the timing marks to ensure they remain aligned. This will help confirm that everything is correctly positioned.
      Reconnect Battery: Once you're confident everything is correctly aligned and reassembled, reconnect the battery.
      By following these steps, you should be able to return the crankshaft and camshaft to their proper alignment at TDC, ensuring the engine timing is correct. If you encounter any difficulties or uncertainties, consulting the vehicle's service manual or seeking assistance from a professional mechanic is advisable
      Thank You

    got a 2017 connect. deisel. not a wetbelt. Ford quoted me (huntly aberdeenshire) 1000 + vat. Anyone had one successfully fitted for less in other garages?

    • @sanumotorswithcharlie
      @sanumotorswithcharlie  Місяць тому

      It seems like you've been quoted £1000 + VAT by Ford for replacing the timing belt on your 2017 Ford Connect diesel, which is quite a significant expense. However, there are other options that may be more affordable.
      1. **Comparing Prices**: It’s beneficial to shop around and get quotes from multiple garages. Independent mechanics often charge less for labor compared to authorized dealers. You might also find that some independent garages offer warranty on their parts and service, similar to what Ford provides.
      2. **Parts and Labor Costs**: The cost breakdown typically includes parts (timing belt kit, water pump, auxiliary belt) and labor. Parts alone can cost around £220 from Ford, but cheaper aftermarket kits might be available
      3. **Local Recommendations**: Seeking recommendations from local car forums or community groups can also help you find reliable and cost-effective services in your area. Many users share their experiences and can point you towards trusted mechanics.
      Considering these options, you should be able to find a more cost-effective solution than the initial quote from Ford. Make sure to confirm that the garage uses high-quality parts and provides a warranty for their work to ensure peace of mind.
