You may not have “found” the witches bottle, but you “discovered” it. I have to admit I had happy tears in my eyes as you told your story and the folklore of the witches bottle. I am beyond thrilled this discovery happened to you …. you deserve it and I can’t wait to hear the rest of the story. 🥰🥰

So impressive! Who needs Time Team when we have Kate and Fleur? I agree with Karyn - you didn't find it, but you definitely did discover it. Before you wonderful ladies, they had an anonymous ceramic bottle. Now, they have a witch bottle!

As a librarian and a historian myself, this has been on my bucketlist for 30 plus years; to do is discover something very cool or curate something important to history. Wowza ladies. So Amazing, You are so blessed and privileged to have done this. This makes me so happy to have someone I know have this opportunity!

Hi ladies, Mills were often a part of Iron works. The water wheel was used to power giant hammers to crush the Iron ore and make it ready for smelting. Water wheels also powered the bellows at most furnace sites in the early days.
Eventually, steam power took over and the mills became redundant.
    Big hugs,
    Louie Xx

Wow, you identified the witch bottle, congratulations, without your input that would have sat there forever undiscovered as a witch bottle, you should be very proud of yourselves, well done, a great tale beautifully put together. Regarding the iron slag, water mills were very often used to drive hammers for metal working, this was often as an offshoot of a mill that might be for fulling or even making flour. An extension of the drive shaft could drive belts and an oval drive would lift and drop the hammer at an very fast pace. Just a thought as most metal work was produced close to where it was to be used. Great opportunity that really paid off ladies.

    • @MudlarkingWithKitCaboodlers

That is amazing about the witch bottle find. It's a good bet that the school was grateful that you two came by to let them know what they had in storage. Absolutely fascinating. When you found all the unexplained slag it reminded me of something I saw from Absolute History about lead mining during the Tudor period. According to this program the miners used to build temporary furnaces, and then temporary forges called black ovens or something like that, to smelt and refine the lead ore. I just wonder if it might have been something related to that practice since there wasn't a known forge in that area? It's certainly a curious thing. Thank you for sharing.

How exciting for you to be credited with the identification of the witch bottle! They are very interesting items! As you probably know they were usually placed near an entrance to a property, or near doorways, in the corners points, north, south, east, and west to ward off ill will or curses aimed at a certain person. It is thought that the cure would go to the jar because of the personal items placed within and be caught there. They are strong magic. I have heard of several being found on property here in the states, several all in one spot, the thought was they had to be “refreshed “ on occasion. ❤️❤️❤️

So exciting!!! Fantastic identification! The slag glass might have arrived there in imported soil from another location maybe? Thanks for sharing 🌼🌸🌼

Perhaps the slag glass came from fill, that was dug up near an ironworks, to level up the land. still watching!

Wow, what a bottle discovery. Kept hitting replay to see the inside. Do you think the Museum of London will do a DNA on the contents? Great video ladies. Have a great week.

Thank you Denise! We have uploaded still pictures of the inside on our instagram, We are hoping for some DNA testing, but because it was uncorked for so long, there is a chance the contents have been contaminated, but fingers crossed!

What an amazing discovery! Congratulations Fleur and Kate 🤩🤗🥳
If you want to know what it is...ask a Mudlark. Maybe Archaeological teams should include a Mudlark or 2 from now on, just in case. 😉😊

Whilst doing research, we came across a lot of "how to videos" on how to make modern witch bottles! It is very cool and amazing that people still practice it today!

The mills must have been used as a means to power a bellows for a foundry and this is why the previous mills caught fire. Glass slag results from the extraction of iron from the sillica rich iron ore in the refining process. If the foundry furneces were used for processing iron ore, then it woupd be easy to fire pottery too.

I think you’re deserving of credits.. if you hadn’t identified it, it could have been discarded. The contents could have been trashed.. You’re amazing people. Thank you for your vids
