  • Sometimes when you are wandering along the mud at low tide looking left and right - you see something which makes your heart leap. This is what happened when I saw something gleaming in the sunlight! It was a tense moment taking it out of the mud. Would it be whole?!!
When I did get it out of the mud and then researched it. It took me on a wonderful and unexpected journey to the first proper stadium of Arsenal football team back in the 19th century!
If you would like to try mudlarking dont forget that you do need a permit and you can find all the details here:-

Thank you for watching. You can follow me on twitter and instagram for more stories and finds @tidelineart

When I was a lad in London in the 1950s, I had a collection of marbles. The most common (and cheapest) were made of clay, the better ones of glass, the occasional ball bearing and those which had been extracted from mineral water bottles and were known as 'bottle washers'.

Thanks for the Arsenal field trip! One of my mentors was a Salvation Army Major from Kent who played pro football before being called to the ministry. He was a huge Arsenal fan. He passed on to glory at 82, but would have been thrilled to see those steps from the original Arsenal grounds. Thanks!

I think that brass item early in the video was half of a gun powder flask, either for a small pistol, or small pocket revolver. Those small .31 cal. revolvers were common, as were the little Belgian made muff pistols.
I don't think that was a Walther PPK. It was definitely German, but it looked more like another one I've seen, a Saur und Sohn or something, if I remember. A Walther would have smooth, elegant grips with "Walther" and a banner on them, and an exposed hammer. What you had was hammerless, either with a shrouded internal hammer, or striker fired. I'll look in a bit and come back and post. You need Ian V. Hogg's Small Arms of the World and his book on handguns. There are used copies on eBay.
Edit: It looked vaguely like a Sauer 38H from WW2, but I can't tell. Germany used lots of small 7.65mm pistols from all over....France, Italy, Czechoslovakia.....you name it! It wasn't a Walther though....i don't think. Mine is a 7.65mm Colt Pocket Hammerless Automatic, serial number indicates 1911 production. In WW2 those were issued to the OSS, Churchill's bodyguards, and British Army motorcycle couriers, most were woman! Awesome video. Enjoy the week. 👍😃🇬🇧🇺🇸

My Grandad was in the police force between the wars , the cape was rolled up really tight, he would spot really drunk men reeling all over the place, he would thump them with his rolled up cape to knock them out and drag them into someone' s front garden to let them sleep it off. This saved two things a record for the drunk and all the paperwork for my grandad , the rolled up cape would leave no marks. It were 'ard in them days.

The pistol you found was imported to the US from Italy and somehow found its way to the UK. The marks on the L side of the slide shown in the thumbnail pic are that of EIG Imports in Miami, FL (Hialea) This semi-auto pistol was made by Tanfoglio in Italy around the mid 60's. This model was made in .22 cal. and .25 cal. Not by Walther, Not a PPK. EIG was in business from the late 1950's to about 1970 . As far as I know they never sold any firearms in the UK or anywhere else, only in the US. They imported inexpensive (aka 'saturday night specials') revolvers, semi-auto pistols, shotguns and some rifles to the US . The firearms imported were made in Germany, Italy and Spain. While it does bear a general semblance to the PPK, it is not. Always enjoy your videos. The bottle awesome! What was the purpose of the indentations in the glass? I have seen marble stopper bottles here in the US but not with the deep indents in the glass.

I was puzzling about the pistol, because the "marks" on the slide look almost diecast. I had wondered if it was a replica, but I couldn't quite see of what. A real pistol, made by the methods and to the standard usually applied to replicas would explain a lot! Before the UK had strict firearms licensing laws and handgun bans, there were very strict laws about the poof testing of firearms sold for non-military use in the UK and that alone rules out this particular weapon from legal ownership! In the sixties, someone could have obtained a certificate to own a _real_ Walter PPK, but it would have been illegal to sell this particular firearm even to someone who had a certificate.

Hi Nicola , another interesting video from you . Amazing the Last remnants of Arsenals first Footbal ground . The Codd bottle is a 6 oz capacity , known to the Victorian Lemonade / Mineral water Trade as a ` Split ` size . As u say there was not much drink contained in these smaller versions of Codds ' Globe Stoppered ` bottles . Bottle and contents would have sold for around a Halfpenny , with likely a Farthing Deposit on returning the empty bottle. Judging by tthe evidence from Us bottle diggers who have dug Victorian / Edwardian Ash/ rubbish Tips , this smaller size Codd was not as popular as the 10 0z capacity which held half a Pint. Yet the Dinky small size is more appealing to most MODERN DAY collectors. Hiram Codd the inventor and Patentee of this fascinating bottle design died in 1887 and is buried in Londons Brompton cemetry . He would ` Spin in his Grave ` if he knew that the very rare Cobalt Blue glass versions of his bottle have sold in auction for £6- 8,000. Incredible eh . Wish i could dig 1 for Nowt😸

What a wonderful adventure - NIcola - you never disappoint! The odd brass thing reminds me of the back of C3PO's head. But, maybe the back of a mini lightbulb sconce? Love the closing credit "Down by the River" by Angelo- brilliant!

Another brilliant video Nicola. So good that a part of the stadium still remains in that garden! I hope no one ever removes it.

Thank you for bringing history to life. The cod bottle is a neat find, as is the lion head. I would hope that you could put your Thames talk and exhibit on line for those of us unable to travel to London. I understand that London is going to be REALLY HOT in the coming week so please be careful and stay cool if you can! Love Angelo's new song, all the best x

Nicola, there was a tiny pipe bowl right below the first pipe you mudlarked! I can't believe you didn't see it right there. I thought, she'll get that next, and you didn't!

That brass item you found looks like half of powder flask. I doubt it is, but that’s what it reminded me of.

      I agree completely!
I shoot black powder rifles and this item looks like what I have used with friends rifles.
Mine is cylindrical and uncomfortable in a pocket. The flask variety is better when worn in a pocket.

Coincidence that the cod bottle is for mineral water, and one of the roads next to the stadium is "Mineral Street"???

*Kia ora (hello) Nicola, Thank you for another UK history lesson. I hope Dinesh and his family, plus future owners of that property, never destroy those 'Arsenals' concrete steps... cos that really is a piece of England's soccer/football history. That was amazing they are still there & in the meantime a great place to put pot plants on there. The history of the bottle and how it connected to them concrete steps is quite amazing. Dinesh should you be reading this, do get a plaque made with dates etc on those steps of the history of your land.*

    Nicola,
I always enjoy following your discoveries and the history you uncover in your research, post discovery! It is fun to imagine who smoked the pipes, sat in the Invicta stadium or tussled with the policeman when they threw the gun in the Thames! lol
btw, Angelo has a great voice! Hopefully we'll all hear more from him in the future.
    All the best from California,
    Barbara

It's great what you find in your mud lurking on the Thames. It brings history back to life ,who ever used them it bring them back to life ,even century later. My minds eye can see them smoking from pipes or drinking from the bottle even young children playing with the lead toys.

An empty codd bottle led Nicola to the mad world of football !!🤣. It reminds me the film " The Gods Must Be Crazy", written and directed by Jamie Uys ( 1980).
    Great video, thanks for sharing.

Well done Nicola for adding some really interesting research around the original Arsenal stadium in Plumstead. I’m a lifelong Arsenal fan who grew up and went to school in various parts of SE London in the 1970’s but emigrated to NZ at the end of the 1980’s. This means that I have a special interest in your mudlarking around parts of the Thames that were part of my many playgrounds so many years ago. So for me I get to enjoy your (and Scifinds) mudlarking not only for the finds, etc. but also being reminded of so many places and childhood memories. The tracing back to remnants of the first Arsenal home to somebody’s back garden is simply fantastic and something I had no idea about - I’ll tell my sons here about it as they are of course also Gooners!
Thanks again and keep the great videos coming!
