Martin roasted me once at a show in 1980. He said something like: Before the show I was back stage putting my 30 minutes of jokes and entertainment list together for you, but then I thought, you guys deserve something more, so I am just going to mix things up tonight and just wing it. I yelled "Go for it!" Then for the next 5 minutes he went on a roast of epic proportions. He started off with "Isn't it sad when interrelated family members marry?" I sure wish I had a recording. What a memory.

It occured around 1:30 I’m sure the heckler did not even understand they were being humiliated, and isn’t that the best way to handle hecklers? ;-)

Before Steve Martin found bluegrass, Mull was a versatile master at incorporating his cynical sophisticated a**hole persona to perfection. Fernwood 2 Night, in 1977 just two years after Saturday Night Live's debut, produced by legend Norman Lear, was so far ahead of its time that it looks prescient right now. Way before Garry Shandling's shows, it also gave us the gift of Fred Willard.

soitgoes, thanks for your comment.....for you just might be right about his being the absolute best "sit down" comic....and proof of his talent is the fact that he still shows up in TV comedies still today in 2016.....like his role as the "drug induced" pharmacists in Two & A Half Men. I consider myself lucky to have seen Martin Mull perform back around 1974, when I was still in high school. He played in a little college coffee house on the campus of Fairley Dickenson University in Teaneck, NJ. where patrons sat cross-legged on the floor at low round tables. He wasn't nationally famous then, touring by himself as "Martin Mull and his Fabulous Furniture". He had one or two albums out, and his acting career was yet to take off. A high point was him performing his ode to ex-hippies, "Let's Be Normal".
