  • Backyard poultry farming plays a crucial role in the livelihoods of over 30 million rural households in India, providing a vital secondary source of income and a sustainable source of eggs and meat. This cost-effective practice supports nearly 70% of rural households, making it a significant contributor to rural economies.
In response to the unique challenges faced by farmers in backyard poultry due to climate change induced stresses like heat, animal attacks etc, solutions have been co-developed with partners resulting in an innovative, decentralized renewable energy (DRE) integrated, climate-adaptive #poultrycoop solution. A pilot program was implemented in partnership with the @Department of Agriculture, Karnataka in Davangere district, where 80+ farmers adopted the #poultrycoop solution, ensuring prevention in production losses and reliable income.
The coop was customized based on feedback from both farmers and department officials, ensuring it meets local needs. By addressing thermal, spatial, and management needs, this coop offers a sustainable way to improve backyard poultry practices, enhancing both production and income of Farmers.
Some of the captured impact include:
50% reduction in egg loss reported
80% reduction in mortality rates reported
Additional income of min. INR 1,00,000 / annum

    Key Features of the Solution:
1.Thermal Insulation: The coop utilizes building materials with thermal insulation properties, mesh walls for enhanced ventilation, and raised floors to protect birds from wet ground during rains.
    2. Safety and Space: The coop meets the spatial requirement of 1 square foot per adult bird, features separate entries for birds and farmers, and includes a secure locking mechanism.
3.Dedicated Egg Laying Areas: Six dedicated areas are included in coops designed for 100 birds, reducing egg loss and improving productivity.
4.Maintenance: Raised floors allow droppings to fall through, making cleaning easier and maintaining hygiene within the coop.
5.Solar Integration: Solar-powered lights are installed to ensure safety at night, helping in bird weight gain and overall flock well-being.
This climate-resilient solution demonstrates how innovative, energy-efficient infrastructure can transform livelihoods in rural communities. By improving production, savings, and income for farmers, backyard poultry can become a more reliable source of income for rural households. "
