  • #SlowAirSunday presents an Irish Ballad called The Cliffs of Dooneen, made famous by the band Planxty. The song was written by Jack McAuliffe from Lixnaw, County Kerry about the cliffs around Dooneen Point near Beale, Kerry in the west of Ireland.
    Tune Origins:
The late Liam Buckley who was born in the cottage immediately adjacent to the Cliffs of Dooneen has stated the poem was penned by Jack McAuliffe who had travelled from Lixnaw to Beale to visit his sister. Jack had spent time with locals in the fields above and shore below the cliffs. He then visited Bill and Nell Buckley's cottage, known as "99" a few hundred metres away - for tea and scones. Liam was told by his mother that the poem was written at the kitchen window of the cottage. Liam says the poem was put to music years later by a local musician. Liam did not know the date the poem was written but he remembers it from the 1930s
    Lyrics:
You may travel far far from your own native home
Far away oer the mountains far away oer the foam
But of all the fine places that I've ever seen,
There's none to compare with The Cliffs of Dooneen
Take a view oer the mountains fine sights you'll see there
You'll see the high rocky mountains on the West coast of Clare
The towns of Kilkee and Kilrush can be seen
From the high rocky slopes at The Cliffs of Dooneen
Its a nice place to be on a fine Summer's day
Watching all the wild flowers that ne'er do decay
The hare and lofty pheasant are plain to be seen
Making homes for their young round The Cliffs of Dooneen
Fare thee well to Dooneen fare thee well for a while
And to all the fine people I'm leaving behind
To the streams and the meadows where late I have been
And the high rocky slopes of The Cliffs of Dooneen

This is another beautiful tune played by✨You✨! The scenery reminds me of my grandfather Duncan Mac Donald who was pure Scottish born in Nova Scotia! A very proud man,who taught us all to be very proud as well! To The Highlands We Go! When grandfather lived in Sedona Arizona, his house was built quite near the Red Rock Mountains there, this video takes me there,gd times, great memories! Dont know where u made your video...where ever it is,IT SURE IS BEAUTIFUL! Thank You For All The Beauty You Bring To Us All With Your Music! I love it!✨

tá sí an-mhaith go deimhin..........wow great rendition, just as good as or even better than with the Uilleann Pipes that I heard this so often with Christy Moore on vocals. It would be wonderful to know if their is a video of the Cliffs of Doneen with Finbar Fury on Uilleann Pipes and Christy on Vocals.

I like the tempo of this version, of you need a reference:
