The Dark Island: Bagpipe

- Originally written and played on the accordion, this weeks #SlowAirSunday features one of my favorite traditional Scottish tunes. The song, Dark Island, was written by David Silver, and the tune was written by Iain MacLachlan, an accordionist who lived in Benbacula island. This was created for a BBC Thriller called the Dark Island, in 1963. The show was filmed mainly in South Uist, but was about Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides. This tune is also known as "Dr Mackay's Farewell to Creagorry" by its composer, Iain MacLachlan.
Lyrics:
Away to the westward, I’m longing to be
Where the beauties of heaven’ unfold by the sea
Where the sweet purple heather’ blooins fragrant and free
On a hill-top, high above the Dark Island
Oh Isle of my childhood I’in dreaming of thee
As the steamer leaves Oban, and passes Tiree
Soon I’ll capture the magic, that lingers for me
When I’m back, once more upon, the Dark Island
So gentle the sea breeze’ that ripples the bay
Where the stream joins the ocean,
and young children play
On a strand of pure silver,
I’ll welcome each day
And I’ll roam forever more, the Dark Island
Oh Isle of my childhood I’in dreaming of thee
As the steamer leaves Oban, and passes Tiree
Soon I’ll capture the magic, that lingers for me
When I’m back, once more upon, the Dark Island
True gem of the hebrides, bathed in the light
Like a midsummer dawning, that follows the night
How I long for the cry, of the seagulls in flight
As they circle high above’ the Dark Island
Oh Isle of my childhood I’in dreaming of thee
As the steamer leaves Oban, and passes Tiree
Soon I’ll capture the magic, that lingers for me
When I’m back, once more upon, the Dark Island
Dark Isle Piper's message:
The Dark Island is the tune that brings me to the Western Islands and captures my heart. Listening and playing this tune takes me to Scotland every time. I hope you enjoy it and go on this journey with me to my homeland.

Miss you Mom
Carried my mama to her rest 9 wks to this, she would sing me to sleep with this as a child,, 😔
Lovely played ❤😊
This music is part of my life's playlist. I first heard it when it was used for the Dark Island radio thriller. I shared it with mother who also loved it. When she found out that she had cancer one of the first things she did was to ask a family member who played the bagpipes to play this at her funeral. Nancy did and as my mum's coffin was taken from the church this haunting tune played, bringing many to tears. Thank you Tress for this heart pulling version. Arohanui (much love) from New Zealand. I pray that you and all those you love come unscathed through these sad times.

Live like Freemen everywhere. Do not give tyranny a cause to rise, it finds it's own way enough.
God Bless Sweet Lady! Thank you for all you Do!
My absolute favourite song to hear on the pipes. Immediately takes me back to when we lived on the Outer Hebrides. The truly, haunting, enchanting and majestic "dark islands" in every sense of the words.

I really enjoyed your version of dark island, It's a lovely tune.
Really enjoyed it😍😍😍
Thank you tess nice way to start Sunday
Wow. And in the PNW. Helps to make ed the place a bit better.
Just to set the record straight..the BBC programme was actually made and broadcast in 1962, and it was used as the theme tune Two sets of words were written to it later in 1963. One by David Silver, and one by my father Stewart Ross. The tune dates to c 1958, hence its earlier title, though rumours abounded about earlier origins.
Alan Ross thank you for filling in all the question marks! I love knowing the history behind these tunes that touch my soul. 💗
Really lovely!
Bravissima 😍😍😍
Really nicely played, for one of the best renditions of the song see Scottish folk band - North Sea Gas.

to the two people who down-voted this: let's see you do better. Better yet, let's see you look better doing it. Challenge out, wankers.
SeaWarriorSon love to you😘
I would like to ask you a few questions
What chanter reed do you play as well as what Drone reeds you use
I use ezdrone Drone Reeds with a Shepherd chanter Reed and I seem to be putting much more effort into my playing to get a good result.
Any help you can offer would be appreciated
Pipes by McCallum with engraved alloy mounts ?
piperbob2 correct!! The engraving is called Victorian scroll and the pipes were made in 2004. They will be my forever set.
@@DarkIsleBagpiper Perfect ! The same as mine, except I opted for the Celtic engraving. I went for the Acetyl version (as I already have a Blackwood set), so no worries about the possibility of their cracking or warping in the future. My other set was made for John D. Burgess (I have a video of this in close-up on UA-cam). Keep up the good work, and the best of luck to you !
Ist a pretty woman in the music
