Building a Convertible Step Stool and Chair
- Over the years, one of our most requested projects has been the step stool/chair. Readers have referred to it as a library chair, a convertible chair, a folding step chair, and a host of other things, but whatever they called it, the function was the same: a chair that quickly converted into a little step stool.

This is a quote from Woodworker's Journal in their 1992 Sept / Oct publication: ' So our eyes have always been open, looking for a good new step stool/chair plan to publish. When a snapshot of this version arrived at our mailbox, sent by Texas woodworker A. B. Beavers, we knew we had a winner. '
I built this chair then and it's a beauty still now. The tilt function always makes a someone smile. Thank you A. B. Beavers.
Keith Wilson I am in Australia and I can't buy the plan as Rockler wont sell to overseas. could you supply the plan to me please? Regards Ian Daly.
I made this project in the spring of 2000. worked great, it was a housewarming gift for my daughter.
This is the best woodworking instructional video yet.
Nice. Very Nice.
You make the chair-ladder very good and very beautiful
.Thanks.
Thank you for this tutorial. I am currently working on this chair and with your latest video we don’t need to photocopy anymore! Thanks again!
My Grandarrents had one of these. It was one of the most used items in the kitchen. I'm definitely making one of these
Great project - It looks very nice, and building it demonstrates a lot of skills. Many of which I don't really have yet -but that won't stop me :)
compared to the other videos this one fantastic it goes in depth to really help one build this piece. thank you so much
Nice step-stool chair! I saw furniture like this one in Chech Republik in Sychrov Palace, made by Petr Busek in XIX century. Good luck with your future projects.
What a great piece, will tray my hand at this piece.
Pretty awesome that you have 100x the likes compared to dislikes. Thanks for your time.
Beautiful project. This is going my to do list. Thanks!!!
That looks great!
That is incredible idea,amazing sir
Super Cool library chair. Really like that you provided the plans. Thank you for sharing.
This is really amazing.
Thank you for sharing your work
Thank You. Great Project.

I build 1 for my sister now all the family want (1) and i come a big family 4 brothers & 5 sisters But thank you for the plans
WoW!!!! this is Creative.. excellent video. my next weekend project for sure!!! thanks for posting. :-)
Beautiful chair / step-stool.
Practical elegant design. Good instructions for making it.
Judging by the amount of chips and dust we see throughout this video, Festool dust-collection is apparently not as good as they claim.
Great project to finish in a couple afternoons! I am assuming that the dado cut in the lower assembly that later gets filled with a spline is for strength? Being that you have to edge joint two boards together to get your panel wide enough, again I assume, that the spline is there because of the jointed boards... i.e. for extra strength at the joint?
nice dude
muito instrutivo aprendi muito ok
Hi Chris, you might want to add that the 3rd step needs to be 6.5 inches deep. The plans show a rebate that is too long for a 6 inch deep step, especially as the edge has to be bevelled to match the gradient of the side rail
The other alternative of course would be to match the length of the rebate for the 3rd step to the same as the 1st step
I made my spline from 150 year oak it was taking from a old church in the east of london it really sets the chair out above the rest i made My chair with Russian birch i got it before the ban came in on Russian wood 👷♂👷♀
Hello sir. please show ladder dimension. Thank you for making this video.
Valeu.
Smart
......well...now im going to make three of these...and add some detail carving to um.
so, all you need is a few pieces of wood, a paper template, and $15,000 in precision german power tools. neat-o.
Yeah.....we all have all those expensive precision tools in our garage or shop don't we.......
Your result looks great. There is a detail missed in your presentation: The plan calls for the spline to be 1/4 X 7/8. You did not mention this and it looks like you did a 3/4 spline (not 7/8) the same width as the steps. Does this matter? I assume the spline could be 3/4 wide like the steps but 1/2 thick for extra strength. (it would be 1/4" proud when finished.)
A note about the template. I downloaded the plan and printed it. I went to a local office printer/copier service and they could not enlarge it because it is read only PDF. I managed to convert that page to JPEG and put it on a thumb drive. As of this writing I have not made it back to the office print shop but I hope they can enlarge and print it because it is now in digital JPEG format. I wish Rockler had furnished a JPEG format in the first place.
@woodworkersjournal Hi! :) Is it possible to get the instructions or plans of the StepStool?
Because it is very hard to get in Germany.
Would be totally nice! :)
Love your work, keep it up!
it is a wonderfull pattern is it available and how can be obtained and how much do it cost Thank You6
I have gotten to the hinge and it must protrude about 3/32 above the seat to work properly. Has anyone else done something different or does this work OK for you?
Unless you're using 3/4 inch timber for the seat and steps, don't fit the backrest until the end. If using thinner wood, you'll need to trim the seat side rails shorter and move the backrest further down in order to get it sitting right as a step ladder. We didn't realize that, and now have extra screw holes to fill!
very nice chair please give me 1 by 1 plan thanks
The spline is there to reinforce the short grain of those crosspieces near the feet. They are recommended in the original instructions for the project.
This video did a 3/4 wide spline but the plan calls for 7/8 " wide.
Nice work but what’s the deal with festools ?
If you could afford all those tools and materials,, then you can also buy a nice designer chair and a good quality stepstool, which are very well thought and examined several times.
Still nicely done, nice video with good tips. Good luck with your future projects
You clearly are not a woodworker and are just in your "random parts of youtube" phase... This is not a random joe schmoe person making a video, it is a builder for a Woodworking magazine.
Additionally, not a single step in this build requires "expensive tools" nor do you have to use "exotic woods". You can get a drill, router, and jigsaw all for less than $120 total, which is less than a single "Designer chair". You can use cheap, dense woods like poplar, or heck even pine if you really wanted to... This PRODUCTION team just happens to have nicer tools that allows them to do it quicker and more accurately as well as use more exotic woods to highlight that it can be a beautiful and function piece of furniture.
Well, you are right, I'm not a professional carpenter/woodworker. But as an industrial product design student I do work a lot with wood. I just belief that if you handcraft something yourself(putting hours/days of time) then you should go for the best quality, sustainable stuff. What's the point of using bad wood/materials and spending so much time and energy on it if it's not gonna be a lot better than the cheap ones in the market, and still more expensive than those. Except for if it's your hobby of course.
You are using the dollar sign so I guess you are from the U.S.
That's one thing I like about America,, the cheap prices. In Amsterdam(where I live) you could buy just one average drill with 120,- …Euros to be exact.
Wood working is a hobby. Its not about saving money. Also, there really isnt any need to buy all those expensive machines. I wood work with a jig-saw, a power drill and basic hand tools. The wood i use is mostly pallet wood that has been discarded at construction sites. End of the day, there is a certain amount of satisfaction one receives from a job well done! ;-)
so beautiful, can i have the specs (or a sample to follow)
Good afternoon
Very good prollecto
Could you send me the plans of the chair to make it in my house.
I'm from Chile Shalom
👌This is an art not a carpentry project.
Very good idea. Do you have the plan?
Translation French English by Google
I've almost finished building it and it suddenly occurred to me that, while it's in seat mode, the piano hinge, with its multiple sharp edges is directly underneath the sitter's thighs so it can scrape and/or pinch the skin. Positioning it to align with the edge away from the pivot makes it proud of the surface of the seat, and lowering it so the pivot is flush with the top of the seat would mean it can't fold into the step mode. Would it be possible to conceal the hinge in some other way?
Hello!
A termék rajza elkérhető?
Köszönöm!
What is the wood used to make the steps?
Mathias Wandel has a program called big print...its perfect for projects like this...google big print...its on his site woodgears.
How can I get the plains?
What do you do about the protruding hinge on the seat?
The hinge is hidden underneath the seat.
@@jjenson2006 The hinge must protrude slightly or it will not work.
Why cut dados into the lower side pieces if they are not used and filled with 1/4 thick splines?
How may I get these plans sir? Thanks.

Hello, why can't I buy the plan in Germany
Grazie mille
How can I order this plan? Any one help me please
I built 2 of these!
Great! I envy you.
I'd like to make for my friends but I don't have the plans.
If you have, could I get it?
my e-mail : sudongman@gmail.com
Thanks.
oh sorry. They came from a tour my parents did in Hawaii. It's difficult to make out the details and some of the words. Most of it involved my own design of the curves. I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to figure out from scratch.
Thanks! ^^
I can't get the Rockler plans as I'm from Canada, and for some reason they won't 'ship' them here.. Is there another source?

@@TJFNixon Ahhhh! I paid Rockler for the same plans you have linked here for free! I should have scrolled down 😆
@@theacademyofanatomy oh no! 😅😂 it’s a great chair btw. My wife loves it.
How can I get the draws of the project?
Romeo Storti
👏👏👏👏👏👏
What is the purpose of the bottom spline?
That is to strengthen that part of the workpiece, considering it being a weak point, due to wood grain direction. I can certainly attest to that, after having made some templates w/ 3/4” select pine, it broke fairly easily, after cutting the dado. Idk what it was that i was doing at the time of fracturing it, but i managed to not break it all the way through(a crack right in the middle of that narrow part, top to bottom, so between 1 1/2”-2” crack)
is there a plan of this in metric units?
+Ahilan Parthipan
With the full size plans you just trace and cut.
how can I order the plans to the step stool and chair
Jack Bucchare Click on the link and pay for the plans.
How can I pay?
So ok

You do not show size and paper work print.
You can print large prints and stencils using
woodgears.ca/stencil/buy.html
woodgears.ca/bigprint/index.html
You dont need to print and enlarge...
Evidently you can't get the plans anymore
oi
Great project but do not order plans. You will never get them. Rockler just sits on the order and does not process.
