This is excellent. In my development the shallowing of the club was my next focus and this explains it very well. 2 practice sessions in and I’m really hitting the ball now. Excellent video!

I’ve been working on shallowing the club for my irons and was crushing the ball on the course yesterday. Absolutely pure with great compression. Sadly, I forgot about “the move” on my driver and 3-wood and was hitting them to the right all day. I didn’t figure that out until the end of the round but shallowing and “the move” are key! I’m a TSG subscriber and it’s changed my game this year! Thanks, Clay!

Try this!! Thank you for this wonderful explanation. This video helped me finally able to shallow with out felling trapped. Pros. Able to increase swing speed with control, no more chopping over the top. Cons: I have to buy a new net or try to repair LOL! I sent a drive though the net (it’s fairly new)! I will have to add 10-15 yards to all my irons. Gained 8 MPH on my 7 iron swing speed, and fells so Smooth 🤯

Great video! I have been working on shallowing the club for a while. I have struggled to say the least. I was missing one thing. I need to have the trail elbow lead. The more I thought about it , the one thing began to make sense to me that the reason you want to shallow the club is to have the trail elbow in a position to lead into the swing! If you lay the club down you elbow automatically gets into proper position to lead into the swing.

Clay, I've been viewing the 20 Minute Shallowing Fix on TopSpeed Golf. Great video series. My question is this: I believe Trackman will show one's Dynamic Loft, which would give one a measure of the amount of shaft lean at impact as Club Loft minus Dynamic Loft = Degrees of Shaft Lean. We players cannot afford a Trackman. My portable launch monitor shows Launch Angle. Mine typically shows 20 degrees launch with a 33-degree 7h. Can I estimate the amount of shaft lean I'm getting from the Launch Angle measurement. I'd like to know how much actual shaft lean I'm getting. Thanks! Enjoy your content and TopSpeed Golf.

I have a love/hate relationship with this video. Love the drill to exaggerate shallowing. Hate the manipulation of the hands to square the face and prevent hitting it right. Much easier is to take a stronger grip or (same thing) close the face slightly at address. At that point you don’t have to think about manipulating the hands anymore and can focus on the shallowing element…which allows you to introduce it much faster into your game without destroying your scores. Just my humble opinion. Thanks for the video!

Where it is flatter going back, but there should be no need to drop the club into the slot on the downswing, because the club should already be there, because you swing back less steep ? Theoretically, no adjustments needed on the downswing? Ty

    • @TopSpeedGolf

Clay... are you squaring the face with the motorbike move (rotating the handle to close the face) or with the left hand rising and the right going beneath (like a split-grip drill) to square it? Or is that optional, both can be used? Any benefit to either? I find the motorbike move difficult and easy to overdo to hit pulls and hooks. With the split-grip drill kind of squaring, I find I end up with weight back on the right foot to allow time for the face to square. What's your preferred method?

    Hey Clay,
I am happy to join your annual membership if you fix one thing for me. I know that everyone has to shallow the club and swing in to out to maximize distance and avoid slice. I also have seen most of your free videos of how not to cast club and swing straighter and longer. However after all these videos , I have still not understood one thing.
I am a left handed golfer and i dont know the good role of wrists. Specially how to time the wrist movement in back swing. So far i try to rotate my body first and in midway of my back swing, i push my rear wrist more towards shoulder and this adds extra yards to my shots and also i feel like i shallow the club better however it is very inconsistent (50%) I cant find any good videos on this and i see most tour players caulk their wrists to make a power move.
I unfortunately am inconsistent because of this.
    Can you help?

Another short question: Looking at Pros (slow motion recording). they perform the wrist flexion to close the club face in the late phase of the downswing. I believe this overcomplicates things for the golfer with average athletic ability because one opens the club face and then closes it. Rather, if I keep my left arm fairly straight going back my right will pull the club beneath the swing plane when I start down. I will concede that I bow the left wrist a little (rotate to the left) going back but that's it.

Thanks Clay for your great videos. RE shallowing, take it from me its plenty easy to shallow the club and still come over the top. I have been doing it for years. The missing piece here in my experience is the left shoulder. If you look at Dustin Johnson, he opens his hips and chest a ton by the time of impact. Shallowing the club will NOT by itself prevent an over the top move when the body is opened so dramatically coming down into the ball. What DJ appears to do on his downswing is to push his left shoulder towards the target line, and this is how is he able to both open up his chest AND not come over the top. By keeping the left shoulder from rotating around the body too early, he can't come over the top. So by all means folks shallow the club. But also work to prevent your left shoulder rotating around so early that you send everything over the top.

Shallow out your swing to find the slot THE MOVE by Clay Ballard, Top Speed Golf
    See tennis racket drill topspeedgolf.com/watch-your-free-video-now-move-1-3/?ytvid=_Les2iDOJJo
Tennis Racket Drill is shallow club and hands out from top and gets club into the slot. Right Palm up.
Rotate the left knuckles down to ground or like turning a door knob to the left side or into the ball while releasing or clearing your left side. This takes the face of racket from open to square into a powerful release using the body for speed not hands.
Like going from right palm up to sky (Think Dustin Johnson) to moving or turning left knuckles to the ground while clearing the left side into square position. If your doing this correctly you can hit as hard into that speed bag as you want. This is what Ben Hogan in book Five lessons was trying to say. No one says it better then Clay Ballard.

I have watched way too many pro golf in slo mo and none of them absolutely none of them shallow the club. The club goes on plane back and same plane downswing. I have never ever never seen a video where the club becomes way behind and flat. It's a lie.
And all the LPGA players go back and forth on the same exact plane. Look at Nelly Korda's swing. Straight back and forth on the same plane.

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  3 роки тому

Shallowing out the club is about the center of mass of the club shallowing to the direction of the force applied by the hands. The club can be on any plane and be shallowing. Dustin Johnson shallows the club when he hits is power fades. When you shallow the club, you then need to get the body rotating otherwise you will but too much under the plane. They tested a lot of Tour players and 99% of them shallow the club. One notably that doesn't is Phil Mickelson. Also, most players do bring the club up and down on a similar plane but there are several that don't like Jim Furyk, Matt Wolff, JB Holmes. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Trying to shallow the club is probably the worst thing that’s ever been out there for amateurs to think about

  • @intilij
    @intilij Рік тому

    This is a bad idea....
The club shallows as a reaction, not an action.
If you focus on maintaining relaxed arms, hands, and shoulders through the takeaway and transition (don't tense up through transition, the way so many do, anticipating too early the hit), then as you bump your weight left in transition (just a 60/40 bump left, both feet well connected to the ground and knees flexed same as at set-up), the arms will drop and flatten. Gravity. The "gravity move," as Nicklaus said.
If you do nothing but keep your left arm relaxed, especially (people relax the right sometimes but keep a rigid left, thinking they must forcibly keep it straight as possible), and the shoulders (you will feel an amazing back stretch across the shoulders if you keep them relaxed as possible through transition), bump left (without opening any, leaving hips and shoulders just sort of paralyzed and inactive during that bump), those arms will drop and flatten.
And because the hands and wrists are relaxed, too, they will maintain their full cock with you having to do nothing. You can see the effect in the mirror, or watching a still photo of Hogan in that transitioned state. The telltale result, is you are bumped left, hips and shoulders dead and positioned more or less same as they were top of the backswing, wrists relaxed and fully cooked, and (then here's the sign) the clubhead still and easily the nearest thing to the target.
Except now, versus top of backswing, you are ready to hit. Matters not if clubhead is far and away closest thing to the target top of backswing if in transition you are going to unwind all of that.
If like Jon Rahm or Tony Finau you don't take it that far back, but in transition leave the clubhead pretty much as near the target, you will still have set the clubhead at the start of a long runway, and with all the relaxation necessary to move it quickly down the runway. And you'll crush it.
The relaxation in arms and hands through transition leaves you "ready to hit" and the clubhead still way behind you, that is nearer the target. Compare Hogan (or any good player) where the clubhead is top of backswing and in transition. Arms will have dropped and shallowed while clubhead remains nearly as close to the target as at the top.
But it comes from the bump left and staying relaxed. Not anything active. You don't need a swallowing drill. You need to relax. You taxi the clubhead to the start of the longest possible runway, while leaving yourself relaxed muscles, which are quick muscles. Very quick. Where tense ones are slow.
And once transitioned and ready to hit, do not try to activate the muscles in right arm and hand. It is a "swoosh", an instant from there until the end of your swing, and where centrifugal forces and clubhead are absolutely the heaviest. You would need a massively strong right arm to do that. Do teenage kids, or women on the LPGA like Nelly Korda (who hits it 270+) have a massive right arm? No! Because that's not how you get the club through the ball. You use the ground and big muscles. The arm is small muscles. You press hard into the ground with that good connection you have, and use glutes and core and left-side back and left-side shoulder muscles to throw that left shoulder and left hip up and behind you.
And the arms whip through. You keep them relaxed. Maybe an instantaneous little nudge through the ball, like when throwing a ball, but not necessary.
With the shoulders and hip working up and back, the head will respond by staying low and not flying outside, until the ball is gone. That keeps the clubhead low and square a long time, and the ball will compress.
My two cents. Ok, my 25 cents, lol. Sorry for the long comment.
