Your explanation of turning the left elbow out and turning the right elbow under to shallow the club in transition has really helped me achieve solid contact, By combining this move with right side bend to get my shoulders turning on plane have become my two key swing thoughts Thank you
Dan...i literally just noticed that abt the left elbow as i just watched the video several times....it was a little nugget that I can't wait to try at the range today. Glad someone else caught it.
So well explained., Clay. I spent a few years figuring this out on my own, even having lessons from three different teachers. None of them could explain it as well as you. My mental key on the swing is to point my left shoulder to the ball, and rotate around my spine on the downswing. The hips turn too. This is my mental picture that works for me. Seeing your arms spread prior to the downswing is helpful, too. Thanks.
Clay! I just subscribed to your channel. This morning I took this advice and instruction to the course and I am pleased beyond words. Thank you! The first iron shot I hit went left again and missed the green from 140. I thought I was applying your shoulder tuck tip but obviously didn't get it correct. I dropped a second ball and got it right that time. Not only was I dead on the pin but the shot sailed a bit long meaning I flushed it. A couple of short irons I stuck inside three feet for birdies from outside a 100 yards using the new move. I am pumped to play 18 tomorrow. The only thing I need to guard against is making the move to quickly. Great visuals in this video!
You're videos are great, I keep sending them to my high handicap friends-subtle hint, lol. For the first time I'm shallowing the club, creating more ball compression and getting distance (at 50yrs old) that I didn't have when I was bigger and stronger (late 20's to mid 30's). Thanks to your videos the consistency is finally coming around!
This video is one of the best for me that I’ve seen in a while. Really good explanation and drills/thoughts on the subject. I instantly saw it fix a lot of my bad habit I’ve developed recently - ie I’ve been more of a shoulder dropper instead of keeping the on the shoulder plane. Awesome stuff!
I’m a low handicapper and have been struggling off the tee recently. Watched you video and have always subscribed to Hogan’s right elbow move and frankly, until I watched your video and never trusted opening the face. Confirmed on the range and hit 100% fairways the next round! Man, what a more enjoyable game when you’re hitting consistently.
I've been needing this video for 15 years....this along with early extension has been as frustrating as you can imagine ...thanks for this video man!!!!
I had serious shoulder alignment issues after I hurt my right shoulder and couldn't swing for a few weeks. I was trying to protect the shoulder I inured been though it was perfectly fine! ( I know..Old men have the best excuses!!) What I did was, align my feet parallel with the flight line I wanted the ball to take. Then, I aligned my shoulders with my feet. I did this for about two weeks until I felt my shoulders were naturally aligning parallel on their own. Once I was comfortable with my shoulder alignment, I could then shift my right foot back for a draw or my left foot back for a fade. It took me a lot of practice swings to correct my "Late" shoulder. I was fitting the ball, hitting way behind the ball, my club was flailing like a flag in the breeze!! I really like how you have approached this issue!
Great video! Thanks for showing me what I've been trying to figure out at the range. You're a great teacher. Definitely got me excited to go back to the range and practice.
Clay, working through the Stable Fluid Spine online and finding that I dip the right shoulder under plane and get “steep/stuck” with my driver when trying to keep stable fluid. Immediately feeling more control and consistent delivery to impact focusing on this. Hard to keep stable fluid spine without this insight in my opinion. This is such a big insight…just brilliant.
Great video Clay! I would add, that as a former tournament level tennis player, I have found that for many slicers of the world, it is often easier to feel/understand/train the brain controlling the right hand/wrist being in extension/hand twisting back&down at the top/start of the backswing, than getting the left wrist, which is also attached to the grip, and mimicking the opposite of the Right Wrist's Extension, to be in that bowed position. Everyone struggling to 'get-it', should watch Clay's tennis right wrist video - it's honestly the key to the golf swing.
Clay, I was dealing with this exact issue yesterday. I found myself overcompensating for a pull by lowering my left shoulder too much on the backswing. One thing I am fairly certain of is when my shoulders are on plane I can feel it at the top of my backswing, and I even know at that moment that my shot/swing is going to be a good one. Thanks for this video because I was not sure what was going on but now I am fairly certain you hit the nail on the head.
Yeah, right elbow close to body for me was the holy grail of what I was missing through all my other golf movements. I practiced this last Sunday and the turning through the ball was like nothing else I had ever felt before. Clearly there is a period of bedding the drill in and honing the feeling but if you can stick with it you will find you start to TURN through the ball whilst delivering the release rather than anything else...GOOD LUCK EVERYONE IN YOUR JOURNEY.
Mark 5:38 and on are the golden nugget for me. I’ve been struggling how to naturally shallow the golf club. I’m a lefty and focused only on what the hands were doing but ignoring the elbows and shoulders. Can’t wait to practice this. One question though. Why is it that I feel like i’m losing swing speed/power/torque moving from casting the club to shallowing the club? I feel being so focused on shallowing that i lose that power
It's likely you're used to using your arms for the power and speed. I'd make sure I'm getting a big turn (you can drop back the back foot a little and flare it out as well as lift the front heel to get more hip and shoulder turn in the backswing) then drop the club in the slot and square up the face and you can turn as hard as you like/can. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor

Great video just watched it several times....I think I just had a revelation...fingers crossed...sooo at some point are you saying that our left elbow points away to shallow the club? I have been trying to keep my elbow facing the ground from 90 degrees throughout the back swing and down swing....therefore I may have doing the wrong thing. Please advise. Thanks a zillion.
Yeah, in the beginning of the downswing, I would try to get your elbow pointing more out so that the club will shallow. If it's pointed down then you'll likely come down steep.
Wow dude this makes so much sense...I always thought I dont get this...im.coming from the inside why am I glancing the ball and feel so put of place...because you can still be steep and coming from inside? Wow
You might be coming too much from the inside or have the face too open/closed and not hitting the center of the face. Hard to say without seeing your swing.
Clay, if I was your age, I could try and swing like that but at 74, it’s a back killer to follow through after the downswing so I have to swing out to the right with an easier turn to allow me to play.
I’m new to your channel and really enjoying your videos. I think they are extremely helpful and I’m excited to watch more. On another note, really like the hat you’re wearing in this video… Not only does it look sharp, but appears very functional for sun protection. What brand hat is that?
Pure gold coach!!! Thank you very much for this video!!! I have been struggling with the flattening of the club on the downswing. I'm sure this is going to help!!!
This was the best video I’ve ever seen for my game. The arms out rotating drill was a game changer in getting the right shoulder angle. Eliminated my pull shot immediately!
Clay, i noticed that your lessons seem to be on very short grass in front of a green, I don’t know what type of courses you play on but i think the majority of people don’t end up on the ‘short’ grass in front of the green. Can you show us what you do when tour off the fairway and in the rough??
Thanks Clay! Technical question - if I am using the Stack and Tilt method, would I still desire to move the left elbow as demonstrated for the right hand player? Already fairly close to the "slot". I appreciate the drills immensely
For step 3, if I have a strong grip, do I still need to rotate wrists down; or by having a strong grip, the club face should already be square at impact?
I've been trying to flatten out my downswing as you instruct, and I find it incredibly difficult to make my arms move like that after years of swinging too upright. I've seen all the tips and drills - just struggling to get the "feel" of flattening out my swing plane ingrained into my brain and body, and the muscles in my arms re. timing of my swing. Really struggling with thin shots as a result. Any advice, Mr. Ballard?
Hey man! I know this is a super late reply, but maybe it’ll still help. There’s one thing that has helped me, and it’s a natural fix. Once you feel the correction, you can make the change immediately. Take a few practice swings imagining a ball way outside your front foot, and try and “hit” that ball straight. What happens? Your entire body shallows so that you can “hit” the ball on line without pull hooking it. After a few practice swings, and you feel how you’re supposed to swing, now place a ball where you normally do. The key is not to “hit” this ball, but to swing at the imaginary ball on front of you and the actual ball just gets in the way of your swing. Once I made this change mentally, it took me 1/2 bucket to get the feel with a real ball. Let me n ow your thoughts. I’ve been thinking about more natural ways to fix my athletic motions this way, and it’s helped immensely.
Do you have a video segment where you show how to make the best use of the left leg in the golf swing I e build the post with the left leg and rotate around it on the follow through. My left leg seems to be collapsing either before or at impact and it looks like I'm suffering some kind of seizure through this part of the swing. It's quite embarrassing and I need to fix it. I've hit a few balls where I felt the left leg "post" and got through the ball and could actually feel the centrifugal force at impact and it felt UNBELIEVABLE and the ball compressed and rocketed off the face of the club, only problem is I have no earthly clue how I did it and repeating it, or even "finding" that move everytime is very elusive. The cure is in me, I just don't know how to do it. Thanks 🙏

Awesome video ! However I’ve always wondered WHY a shallow swing path is best ? Has there ever been a scientific experiment that proves this - e.g. if club head speed, club face center contact and all other variables other than swing path and club face were all equal is there in fact a specific combination of those two that result in the ball going the furthest ?
I feel like I need to clear hips first to drop the club from inside automatically. If I force to drop the club in slot without clearing hips, then I come across in downswing.
The moves go together but keep in mind that opening the hips doesn't automatically drop the club from the inside. In fact, it usually does the opposite for most people. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
i was doing this but stopped because my shots were ballooning, only now do i realise that i was on my trail foot and not on my lead foot so dont make the same mistake i did because you get crazy speed with the left shoulder going up accelerating the club
This seems more like addressing a symptom rather than the disease. I solved my over-the-top problem with face on video analysis. Many years ago. But it is painful. The problem is is you have to become an excellent athlete. I finally figured out how to stop my right knee from breaking down and sliding outside, learning to keep a firm base, minimum hip rotation/slide, and I had to do many hours of drills to have the hip and shoulder angle to be correct just like a pro. Once all the weight is shifted incorrectly to the outside or back you have no choice but to come over the top. But if you have a coiled turn then as you said the shoulder automatically comes down on the plane, you do not have to think about it, A stable base, and turn the shoulders as full as you can without hurting yourself.... right shoulder slowly comes down on plane. my opinion is... it is all in the stable knee and base. And becoming a better athlete. More fitness. You will have good days and bad days it is a long road to improving your over-the-top move.
The key move is the transition, which starts with moving body weight back towards the target before the downswing happens. If you can time this, the right shoulder will have no choice but to come down on the correct plane. The reason why the shoulder comes out and over the top is because the golfer is starting the downswing from the top with the shoulders before the weight shift has started, which effectively stops the weight shift from happening. The only way the golfer can make contact with the ball from there is to continue over the top and swing to the left. If the transition is timed so that the weight shift happens before the downswing, the only way to get to the ball is to come down on the inside or on top of the ball--over the top from here is almost impossible because the left hip and left side of the body has already moved towards target and will block that over the top left path of the club. Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard has a great video showing just how to do this move: ua-cam.com/video/-VTE8Oh_Caw/v-deo.html
rather than wrist motion I insist on forearm rotaton and right elbow tugging like Ben Hogan and we have to focus on the grip end position at the waist level in the down swing and to the oppsite derecion in follow through just like baseball level swing
I just do not get it. From my point of view this move would get the club more and more behind me once I put force into it with less and less time to catch up the club face. Clay, could you explain how this thing works in motion once I apply force to the club? Maybe I am missing something here.
I just watched your video showing the “tuck and turn” or tuck of the right shoulder and then turning or rotating. This video seems to contradict that approach. Why the difference?
Compare what you're saying about shallowing the club with how Mike Malaska talks about it here: Feel vs Real: ua-cam.com/video/aTs_Z7rMREo/v-deo.html and here: FULL SWING - How Do I Shallow the Shaft: ua-cam.com/video/UGqfWJFN-vI/v-deo.html As a former PGA Class A professional (retired and 64yrs old) with a current +2 hndcp, I tend to agree with Mike in that you don't want the clubhead falling faster than your hands or the butt -end of the club. Most amateurs will never be able to square the clubface at impact if they allow the face to drop faster than the butt end. I saw it all the time when giving lessons. What are your thoughts Clay on this comparison, and how do you keep people rom dropping the clubhead too fast behind them? Thanks and keep up the great videos sir!
The right shoulder comes over the tip because the club wants to fall behind and the hands go past the natural hidge spot on the downswing. Woth your instruction hit the ball with one arm both left and right Almost impossible. To stop coming over the top you gave to try to pull directly down to the outside of your right foot. It's that simple
I love when instructors include drills. They really help.
Glad you enjoyed it! Hope you play well!

Thanks Clay! Technical question - if I am using the Stack and Tilt method, would I still desire to move the left elbow as demonstrated for the right hand player? Already fairly close to the "slot".
I appreciate the drills immensely
Yes
Yes Clay!! Yes, yes, yes!
Thank you very much!
You bet!
Same, similar or bit different with the driver as we stand further from the ball and arms are more away from the body?
Gives purpose to my practice
For step 3, if I have a strong grip, do I still need to rotate wrists down; or by having a strong grip, the club face should already be square at impact?
You likely won't need to do it as much
Thanks Clay for explaining this. Sometimes the reason we sliced is so subtle we may never realise it.
You bet!
so true.
hi Clay, does this apply to long irons as well? i heard for long irons, you need to be more coming from the inside..thanks in advance!
Yes, this applies to all clubs

This is one of the better lessons I've seen in ages. Thanks Clay 😊
Happy to hear that!
You are the best
Thanks Joe!
i was doing this but stopped because my shots were ballooning, only now do i realise that i was on my trail foot and not on my lead foot so dont make the same mistake i did because you get crazy speed with the left shoulder going up accelerating the club
Interesting video…really strong
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Clay.
Any time
The helicopter drill! Great, thanks.
My pleasure!
I could not stop doing this at mayfair a week ago. Got stuck on the box. Thanks again my friend
Glad to help

I thought that at the top of the backswing you come out of tilt slightly which would move your outstretched arms more horizontal.
That would likely lead to a reverse pivot
rather than wrist motion I insist on forearm rotaton and right elbow tugging like Ben Hogan and we have to focus on the grip end position at the waist level in the down swing and to the oppsite derecion in follow through just like baseball level swing

Shallow means level?
I just do not get it. From my point of view this move would get the club more and more behind me once I put force into it with less and less time to catch up the club face. Clay, could you explain how this thing works in motion once I apply force to the club? Maybe I am missing something here.
It will be behind you if you don't rotate. Open the body into impact.
Wow this is so me. You’ve completely described my issue
Hope it helped!
Thank you Coach! Also,
love the hat - what does Nike call it? 😃
Thanks. Not sure...sun hat?
@@TopSpeedGolf bucket hat i think :)
I need to work on my 70yd shot
Hope the video helps!
Also, I have to delay hit in downswing. If I rush too quick I come across .
I would try to feel like the club is more behind you.
I just watched your video showing the “tuck and turn” or tuck of the right shoulder and then turning or rotating. This video seems to contradict that approach. Why the difference?
It's actually the same, just explained in a different way
Do you have a golf school?
Nope, I focus on helping as many people as possible with Top Speed Golf!
Need this one. Brilliant indeed. Too bad I’m in Canada. Would pay for lessons
Glad it was helpful
Omg.....this guy knows man
Compare what you're saying about shallowing the club with how Mike Malaska talks about it here: Feel vs Real: ua-cam.com/video/aTs_Z7rMREo/v-deo.html and here: FULL SWING - How Do I Shallow the Shaft: ua-cam.com/video/UGqfWJFN-vI/v-deo.html
As a former PGA Class A professional (retired and 64yrs old) with a current +2 hndcp, I tend to agree with Mike in that you don't want the clubhead falling faster than your hands or the butt -end of the club.
It's that simple

oh. wow
Thanks!
The best part of this channel is how he smacks the club face against his shoe after every shot.
Haha...habit
i've seen that on other youtube pros, kinda drives me nuts...sorry clay.

Anyone else sitting in a toilet pretending to swing looking at their right shoulder
😂
Sorry if your looking for support, no no one but you would ever do this on the toilet, seek help.
Clay...'like the pros are doing'... Ballard
Wow
Perfect, One practice session and the slice is gone :-)
Nice!
That disappointing club tap on the shoe @ 2:15 lol 😆 thats usually me smashing my club on the ground ahah
😂
I drop my right shoulder and get the club too shallow, then get stuck at the bottom.
Don't shallow the hands and arms! Shallow the "club shaft"!!!
Exactly. If you shallow the arms and hands too much then you'll typically get the shaft too steep.
Clay , if the golfer would move their hips correctly none of that would come in to play. That's my experience. What say you?
I say that is true sometimes but not all the time
