- There's a fine line between collector and hoarder, and I crossed it a mile ago...
In this video I demonstrate and review my Selmer Paris Rosewood Contra Alto clarinet. This instrument has not been overhauled yet but It does play (kinda).

I briefly played one of these many years ago. Tone and response were really lovely. But I didn't have enough time to get to know it well enough for a real evaluation. But it sure looks pretty!
The rosewood is beautiful. Glad you let us hear this instrument!
I play on the same contra and love it, the one I use is missing all the same things as yours except the left pinky C key. It's got the original peg as well, but it also has the original pads, corks, everything. The fact that it's a school horn doesn't help either. Glad to see another video on these great instruments.
Oh God the bottom of the bell...
haha yeah i thought the same
In my high school band days the contra alto clarinet was played by a short girl who stored two telephone books (remember telephone books?) tied together with string on the shelf next to the instrument, and put them on her chair to reach the mouthpiece. (The instrument had no peg, but I guess it wouldn't have helped if it did.)
I hope I can score one of these at some point. I'm not great at clarinet repair so I'll have to spend a bit more, but I love the big clarinets.
The patina is gorgeous with the rosewood.
I just commented so I'm not left out, Also who else plays bass clarinet
Awesome video. I've got a Selmer USA Bundy contra-alto which I quite like. It's smaller bore than the Leblanc but perhaps not as small as your Selmer Paris. I've got a Selmer Paris bass clarinet and a Selmer Paris alto clarinet, the low E is super flat and the clarion B is comparatively sharp on both. Do you like the Bundy contra-alto?
Yes I had a Bundy before this. They're really underrated instruments in my opinion.
@@Jared_De_Leon yea I like them more than the metal leblancs, both straight and paperclip. The Bundys are a better acoustic design I reckon. Just sounds like a big bass clarinet which is exactly how it should be!
Brendan Toohey I agree! To me the Leblanc contra altos just sound like contrabasses that are missing a lot of notes at the lower end.
Okay I just have a few questions, as it’s my first year of contra alto clarinet. My school has two, and the one I’m using does not have trill keys; is that normal? The one I’m not using is a selmer, and it has a key on the bell, and I’d like to know what note(s) that is used for.
Lemon Pandas The one with no trill keys is most likely a Vito/Leblanc. I have a Leblanc contrabass and it also has no trill keys and no key on the bell. The key on the bell is covering the low E/Clarion B tonehole. When closed it produces a low Eb
Jared De Leon Okay, thank you! This was very informative concerning the instrument. I appreciate it!
How different is Bundy keywork? Are they the same aside from the added low end? Are they even worth considering?
The key work is similar but the Rosewood is by far the better playing instrument.
What's the story behind the Metal Contra behind you?
Bought it a few years ago to fix up. Actually I just got the part I needed to repair it. Will probably make a video on it fairly soon.
A contralto clarinet is an e-flat instrument, sounding an octave lower than the alto clarinet
More playing and less speech, please! Check my videos to get more of this lovely sound.
