  • I made a Bb piccolo (Sopranissimo?) clarinet pitched one octave above the standard Bb clarinet! The body of this instrument was 3D printed and the keys were 3D modeled by me and cast in brass by Shapeways.

    My guess as to why the Ab clarinet was made was so that it could play the piccolo parts in marches. For example, Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever" is in the key of Ab.

    I'd be excited to see a G piccolo clarinet as well, as it would resemble the fingerings of a recorder (low F would sound like a C) and I think it would be fun. I don't think there's any out there yet.

    I've never heard of an Ab piccolo clarinet. I don't think those were mentioned in the orchestration books ever, and I know I haven't seen one in a band or orchestra. I always believed the only piccolo to be the lower Eb one. It was cool learning something new today!

      It's not really designed with DIY in mind, the keys require special reamers/taps and the assembly requires skills only a repair tech would have. I do have printable files for an A piccolo clarinet available on my website JDwoodwind.com though.

    • @featherfawkes4330
      @featherfawkes4330 Місяць тому

      @@Jared_De_Leon understood, I don't have the skills to design one (and would love a video/other explanation) but I do have the equipment and I'm working on the repair skills. Is there some other reason for not releasing files? I just don't see the downside, but of course they're yours and you don't have to

    • @Jared_De_Leon
      @Jared_De_Leon  Місяць тому +2

      @@featherfawkes4330 part of it is a fear of someone just copying the design and selling it (which has happened to me in the past believe it or not). But also even after designing and printing the body I put a lot of work into voicing the instrument by hand and I feel that makes the instrument truly special, I want to be confident that every JDwoodwinds piccolo clarinet out there has been set up as well as possible, and I just don’t think that can be the case if I simply release the files. I hope you can understand, I truly support people building their own instruments and I hope others can use my designs as inspiration for their own projects!

    • @featherfawkes4330
      @featherfawkes4330 Місяць тому

      @@Jared_De_Leon absolutely. On that note, are you thinking about putting together any guides on those things? The voicing and hole locations are something that have me stumped and I couldn't find much already online. Are you doing math to find the theoretical location or just trial and error? That seems way too complex to just be trial and error

    • @Jared_De_Leon
      @Jared_De_Leon  Місяць тому +1

      @@featherfawkes4330 I’m mostly just doing trial and error honestly. I started by making educated guesses for the positions based on my Ab and just kept making prototypes from there. This is probably the 10th body joint I’ve made.
