I live quasi next door with Heckel in Biebrich (Germany) and even they never made bass clarinets in maple. In the 19th c. some German makers actually used paper maché to save weight and costs. Anyway, recorders made of maple are usually the cheap lines and that is because they have to be drowned in stearin (or, historically, linseed oil-almond oil is used for dense woods like box or grenadilla, maple or sycomore merely soak and clog with it). The sound is always kinda lacklustre.
Thank you so much for showing us this rare instrument Hammerschmidt also mate French system instruments the famous late principal of the Philharmonia Orchestra and London Philharmonic Orchestra of Great Britain the late John McCaw Played One on the famous recording of the Banks of Greenwillow by Butterworth In the early 70s I had a basset horn by Uebel which I love the sound of just like the German system bass clarinet which sounds more Clarinet like the French instruments. It’s all a matter of taste of course. Unfortunately the Uebel Was very much on the shop side. Your new brother is Clarinet what is the pitch like on it. Once again Thank you so much for showing us this marvellous instrument and I wish you much success playing it. God blesss you and yours. Bill. UK
This was really cool to see! I think I actually preferred the German for all the notes except the last, which sounded better with the French. How much did it cost you?
Since maple instruments such as the bassoon, contrabassoon, recorders, etc. tend *NOT* to crack why does that concern you with this bass clarinet? Does it have to do with the instrument’s thinner bore? What is your reasoning for oiling it? 🤷🏼♂️
Maple is definitely less likely to crack but it can still happen. I'd rather be safe then sorry. Oiling also helps to clean the bore. I didn't show it in the video but the swab came out brown after oiling.
@@Jared_De_Leon I was told that oiling my maple bassoon fills in the pores giving the instrument a brighter sound quality. I had noticed some dirty quality on the rags every time I oiled them but not a lot...
You mention this clarinet allows a LH2 "saxophone" fingering for throat F. Is it typical for German bass clarinets to have this fingering option? On German instruments where side F is required, how do players typically finger a passage such as rising chalumeau Db (or lower) Eb F?
Yes this is pretty much standard on all German basses. On instruments without a ring key here you can still play the note with the middle fingering but the intonation is not as good so it is only used for fast passages.
Interesting. I have a G Albert and a German Bb soprano which have LH rings, and LH2 F is sharp on both, although better on the G clarinet. I understand there is a variant called an “Austrian clarinet” on which this fingering is much more viable.
Jared let me know if you want to sell it. I have a Uebel ionized aluminium bass clarinet, German system of course but only low e it's a military model. The orchestra model did go down to low D.
I've seen your videos on 3D printing clarinets, are there any channels you know of that make clarinets out of different woods and compare how they sound?
I am with you, on the upper register the Maple sounded nicer, on the lower the Grenadilla was more mellow and a bit warmer.

This is amazing. You are a wizard, Mr. Jared. Keep making such amazing content, you are THE best.
Wow, nice. I use also a german system instrument, it is a Gottsmann clarinet. I use it for folk music and sometimes jazz. 😁👋
German system bass clarinet?
@@MatthewBanks100 No it's a Bb. I also have a Eb instrument which is also has german system. 😁🎵👋
Love that it was sent in a box of 20 lbs frozen fries
Super find!!!

Before oiling the bore you should cover all the pads. otherwise the pads will stick.
It’s only a light coating, not enough to get to the pads. When I do the full oil soak all keys will be removed.
Saludos desde Ecuador 👍🇪🇨
Overall the German system clarinet has a more refined tone in general, and it definitely comes down to the bore size.
Did any German bass clarinets go down to Low C?

Hello, I was wondering how the octocontrabass clarinet project was going.

Maybe Backun's channel. Personally I find it very hard to hear any sort of difference between different materials over UA-cam.
Are those CURVED key rings on LH1 and 2?
Yeah they’re curved slightly to match the body, very unusual to see on a modern instrument.
Was this an EBay find? Pretty Cool either way. I like using listerine when disinfecting Mouthpieces.
Yeah found it on eBay.
I forgot to bug you, but does this bass have venting for forked Bb/F?
It does not, but the tone hole is fairly large so it doesn’t really need it.
Ah! the dreaded open holes!
What is the piece that you played on the clarinet, i want to play it too but i dont know the name
Bach Cello Suite No.1, Menuet 1
@@Jared_De_Leon thx
Would you be willing to sell that basses bell. Iv been looking for a German bass clarinet bell that I can modify to put on my low c french system
It likely won't fit as the socket and bore is much smaller.
@@Jared_De_Leon I can definitely get the receiver modified to fit, it wouldn't take much work
Any news about the Thooman Bass sax? :(( i would love to hear news about it
Still no issues, I’ve been very happy with it.
@@Jared_De_Leon you would recommend to buy it? Does a Bari Sax mouthpiece works on it?
@@maverick974-c7b yeah absolutely. No you really need a real bass sax mouthpiece if you want a good sound.
you're 3D printed bass clarinet do you have the files? I would love to print one myself.
Yes you can find them for sale here: jdwoodwind.com/shop/p/stl-files-bass-clarinet-in-g
Hey man can you 3d print me a double horn so I can play after 8yrs of single 😂😂😂😂
