  • Code-switching is the practice of alternating between two or more languages or varieties of language in conversation. Tatiana and Endiya explain that the ability to authentically express ourselves through code-switching is extremely beneficial, allowing us to exist in many different spaces and interact with a variety of people. But it can also become detrimental to one's health when people feel like they have to suppress their cultural and physical identity.
When you are a person of color, code-switching is not always a choice, but a necessity for survival. And this extends beyond language to include the physical, which is the motivating factor behind skin bleaching. When one type of identity is considered the norm, we start to invalidate the nuances of personhood. We can change this paradigm, however, by adopting CPU - C - Does this Connect you to the person? P - Are you being Perceived the way you want to be perceived? U - are yoU staying true to your identity? Endiya is a student at San Diego Metropolitan.
Tatiana is a student at Madison High School. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
