I found it strange that the audience laughed when the picture of her natural hair was shown. It was not meant to be funny. This is how her hair grows out of her head.

pausing is sometimes used as a cue for laughter, of course this is not an appropriate time, but it might (half) explain it?

Lora Smothers, you are amazing! I've never " met"/ heard anyone voice my own inner voice as you have done. Thank you for globally speaking about what I've been telling my friends for years! Eloquently!

I feel *schools should stop operating off of grades* ,I feel it can attack a student for their short comings - not only that the pressure/stress that is put on these kids can be overwhelming (especially in higher grades),I feel it can establish a "your not good enough" because of a grade was not up to a certain standered.
I feel like this aid the seeking of validation of teachers and peers /trying to live up to an unreal standered maybe to the point where they are *afraid to make their own decision* / *use thier own ideas* because it can be seen as "wrong"- rather than the affirming of confidence and the validation of the childs self and thier ideas (which this women is doing).
*I support the movement she is heading towards*

I think this might be my favourite TED Talk ever 🥰! If only we could nurture the innate curiosity and natural eagerness to learn that is in ALL children we would have a world full of fascinating and curious children and adults who could continue to learn about one another and the universe around them without fear of ‘getting it wrong’ or being ‘less’. They would just be the wonderful people they were supposed to be...with whatever hair they were supposed to have!

working in Japan, I have had to go all natural as there arent any relaxers here; and working in the public school systems, I have been feeling the same way. Kids dont want to be stuck in cubicles all day anymore than adults do. I wish there was more room for kids to feel free to express themselves even if it may disrupt the lesson a bit. Like one kid wanted to show off some crazy dance moves he learned and wanted the teacher to join in, but because it was time for class to start he was put down as being disruptive. I have seen many students lights being crushed and its pretty sad, they are made to feel dumb because they may not understand the lesson and dont want to speak up.

whoa, great talk... I'm a teacher too and god knows the way they are teaching us to teach is not actually the natural way to do it. Schools are more like a militia these days, they teach children to stay quiet and silent, and then in the house parents now are telling to go out and play. I mean... wtf

  • @theshizlet1

What is called education in our schools is nothing more than indoctrination. A syllabus is chosen for kids by the powers-that-be and all the children are required to do is correctly regurgitate that information. Which ever child can regurgitate the best is deemed as the "bright" one and those who have greater difficulty regurgitating are placed in "special" or "slow learners" classes. To regurgitate someone else's thoughts & ideas found in our textbooks isn't exactly innovative and yet, this form of "education" is common practice right up to college and university. When you get your degree all you did to get it was correctly regurgitate the information in your textbooks and notes in order to get a passing grade. You are no genius. True education is breaking out of that square mould that has been created by the powers-that-be that makes everyone a carbon copy of the other and discovering things and formulating new trains of thought and new types of questions with new answers yourself, instead of somebody else's ideas.

I see this a lot. More and more people are believing in spacing out the industrial learning systems of america. This will be effective but thare has to be a little stick far away to keep the young trees from bending too loose. Obviously you can change the school but it might take time for the society to see and change that. I believe in this. School focuses on Logical intelligence. Many kids can be so many things. However once you get older a little every year i believe teache should just weight them down because then they might think school is usless
