The Band is one of the greats. Robbie Robertson is a prosaic yet soulful guitar, Levon Helm not only plays the drums but sings as well in addition to playing the mandolin. Rick Danko has one of the most beautiful tenor voices in Rock and Roll, Garth Hudson plays the keys in so many iterations (Piano, organ, clavinet, etc.) that it's mind-boggling. Finally, there is Richard Manuel - The beautiful voice that can sing falsetto one moment, and the next be a beautiful baritone. These five men are geniuses and their basic and prosaic style set the bar for so many bands to follow. RIP - Levon, Rick, Richard, and Robbie. Thanks for enriching our lives.
You nailed it, they all contributed to make The Band the success they became. Some say Levon was the soul of The Band, other say Rick. Without Robbie to wiite songs and without Richard, Levon and Rick (my favorite) to sing them they would not be the same, and lets not forget Garth, whatever he did was perfection
This performance was shot as if an interview was being given, full of closeups. Amazing how routinely bad the camera work was for performances in the 60s. Not one single frame where they panned out to capture the artist AND their instrument or the whole band together playing.

Ed Sullivan Show always did the wide shots, so it sticks out here. It's like they had three cameras on stage too close to the Band for anything but close-ups. Maybe they weren't playing to a live audience that day?
I am of the Bands first generation of fans. I watched this video with great enjoyment of the Band in all the glory of their early days. Having seen the Beatles in Ed Sullivan in 1964 at the age of 14 Sullivan’s “here’s something for the youngsters” didn’t seem condescending and dismissive. But when introducing the Band it does. These are men singing a song about an adult subject and the music transcends any age group. I realize now that at the time this performance was recorded Sullivan was out of touch with his market and the times. But he did present some great performers of my generation on his show.
When I first heard it I thought somebody just knew how to play a Jew's Harp really well like my father because that's the sound I heard. If you listen to Simon and Garfunkel's The Boxer you'll hear a similar sound but it's done with a fiddle bow on a guitar.
This fantastic clip is from 11/2/69. Other musical guests on Ed's show that night were Petula Clark andPearl Bailey. Rock pop, and Broadway all on the same show. We will never see variety like that again.

THE Band, not just The Band...One Robbie and Garth alive today May 2021.
Manuel was Helms favourite drummer!
This performance was shot as if an interview was being given, full of closeups. Amazing how routinely bad the camera work was for performances in the 60s. Not one single frame where they panned out to capture the artist AND their instrument or the whole band together playing.
Reminds me as young guy listening to this on an 8 track in the back of my ‘65 VW camper with my hippy girlfriend
I know what Heaven looks like...I’ve been there
Me and my sweet darlin' back then were probably parked in the '62 VW bus next to you
Except this album came out in 68
@@samhoyer4898 psst...didn’t say my ‘65 VW was new at the time now did I?
Actually it was in 1979
@@douglasminger2926 wow don't you wish you hang on to some of those vehicles I think I had every model Volkswagen that was made except for the scirocco and the rabbit but I had the square back the fast back many Vans many bugs but one of my favorite vehicles was the Volkswagen square back with a 1600 CC motor with dual Port heads and when I rebuilt that thing it ran like a Porsche
RIP Levon. Thanks for the music.
Would’ve been nice to have seen a wide shot of the band occasionally.
Ed Sullivan Show always did the wide shots, so it sticks out here. It's like they had three cameras on stage too close to the Band for anything but close-ups. Maybe they weren't playing to a live audience that day?
True...the Band was such an interesting group of people, each with a very distinctive style. I love the group photo on Music From Big Pink.
Was thinking the exact same thing.
Seconded

Classic
One of the best bands of the era!
Rick’s backing vocal supporting Levon’s lead just fits so perfectly. These 5 are THE Band. Accept no substitutes.
Nothing beats the original lineup.
@@blueschewy2558 they still made some pretty sweet music when they reformed in the 80s though.
@@owenroherty397 I agree. Richard Manuel was brilliant.
@@blueschewy2558 The original lineup included Hawk Hawkins. You want him in? Ha ha ha ha.
@@hyzercreek I would have no objection. After all, Ronnie did show up for The Last Waltz.
Flawless performance... The arrangement, the vocals, the tempo, the harmonies and Garth with that sick wah pedal clav.
He was trying for that jew's harp sound, but found something stronger.
they forgot a verse.
@@c-dublife Maybe they cut it short due to TV show time constraints? Still a great live version, not lip-synced to a recording!
@@c-dublife Yep it was Back at the shack and Spike Lee verse , Maybe the line I took another pull that wasn't allowed on TV ..
@@jakollee The vocals were live, the music was pre-recorded.
cool handsome and best voice Levon
It is impossible to overstate the greatness of Levon Helm.
Any doubt this is one of the best vocalists in rock? And playing drums at the same time?
No doubt at all. 👍🙏👍🙏
Pure Talent 👍🏻
Garth Hudson the only surviving member taught "The Band" how to be a Band, he deserves much more recognition than he gets.
You are so right!!! 💓
It will never stop being cool to me
that Garth Hudson thought to play a clavinet through a wah-wah pedal.
I think he's the first one to do that, and it became a regular thing in soul music.
and riffing with his left hand in the low register
So THAT'S what that is. Thank you.
You know I never realized what the hell that was but damn that was the s***
When I first heard it I thought somebody just knew how to play a Jew's Harp really well like my father because that's the sound I heard. If you listen to Simon and Garfunkel's The Boxer you'll hear a similar sound but it's done with a fiddle bow on a guitar.
If y'all haven't seen The Last Waltz, it's a keeper.
Thank you 😭
I mean THANK YOU
Great movie! The best about A rock BAND!
Yeah, some of my all-time favorite music: The Last Waltz!! Thanks Alison!!
Also check out the documentary, Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and The Band.
Yodel odel odel ooooooohhhhhhhh!!!!!!! Listening in Dundee , Scotland 🏴🏴🏴
I remember "The Last Waltz", such a classic performance from a class act band.
The greatest. THE Band.
They were so good. How the bloody hell can you sing and play the skins at the same time? R.I.P. Levi, Rick and Richard.
This fantastic clip is from 11/2/69. Other musical guests on Ed's show that night were Petula Clark andPearl Bailey. Rock pop, and Broadway all on the same show. We will never see variety like that again.
The days when families would all watch and enjoy one big TV 📺 screen together. Wonderful memories!
Yeah, and all that variety forced the boys to cut out a verse. 'Me and my mate....'
@@danm3213 Clean Ed!!!
@@danm3213 Ed's show was G rated like things SHOULD BE NOW!. You act like this was a bad thing,You probably weren't born yet..
@@packingten You were close that I probably wasn't born yet--I was 18. I love how people judge and jump to conclusions on these threads. Tell me what is not G-rated about the deleted verse. Do you even know the song??
RIP Robbie R. Forget about Rush or the Guess Who. The Band is the best rock band that came out of Canada
I get a kick out of the facial expressions Garth makes when he's featured on camera. I've seen similar in other video's.
Greatest Drummer Singer of ALL TIME
RIP Robbie Roberson. Thank you for all the songs and music.....
Ed Sullivan! The Kat was waaaay ahead of his time. Im sixtyfive years old. Mr. Sullivan was older than my grandparents.. America would have missed out on a lot of art if it was not for Ed, The Mammas and the Pappas, Donavon, the Smothers Brothers, Sonny and Cher, the Effing Stones. Topo Gigio (My favorite!) He was waaay cool!
RIP Levon, RIP Rick, RIP Robbie, RIP Richard. Garth is still kicking as I type this.
The lasy waltz is the greatest music film ever, nothing comes near it. 🎶
Levon,Helm and the band kick ass group
If "Whispering Pines" were the only song they ever recorded they'd still be my favorite group.
Or Unfaithful Servant.
Absolutely.
That's a great exercise to play with other bands. So how about "Behind Blue Eyes" or "Tommy" for The Who?
You get the feeling that Richard is pouring his heart out in that song.
Or Rockin' Chair. Or Acadian Driftwood. Or Right as Rain. Or …
I named my dog Bessie.
She died a few months ago
She was 17
I will forever sing this song
Levon is the coolest human to ever step foot on this planet.
RiP Robbie and the rest of Band who has passed on. Robbie was from my hometowon Toronto and this hit me hard. sad day. :(
How Cool Is This.. Funny that Ed called it a little treat for the youngsters when most All of their songs had roots that were deeper than the Mississippi River.. Watched this at the time, thinking that there would Never be another chance to see it again.. How often do you get to see Garth Hudsun smile, up close and personal.. Not often enough.. It is cool, cooler yet; a LOT of youngsters of the day appreciated this music for what it was (is), incredibly good, and authentically groovy.
Yeah bc as soon as the youngsters gig was done the channel was changed.
The first and last time I saw 'The Band' live was at Jahrhunderthalle Frankfurt, May 20,1971, almost 50 years ago, with my Army buddies. The 'Stage Fright' European Tour. The auditorium was 1/2 full, so we moved way up front. Good times.
The Band.. the best band
How good is that!! The greatest band ever with a legendary performance on the biggest stage.
The Band is timeless no matter if you heard them 100 years ago... right now... or 100 years from now.
It was the 20th Century and 1969 far from being 100 years ago. I graduated from Jr. High School in 1969.
Back then they called this rock, and today if a band played like this folks might call it country....but whatever you call it or category you try to sort it in.....it's damn fine music.
kinda in the vein of The Eagles
GOOD MUSIC - is GOOD MUSIC!! That's Just the way it is! THIS IS Some of the BEST MUSIC - ACROSS the BOARD - labels mean Little - It's What is Created that Counts & This is A GR8 Tune! You Can HELP But Groove to it - & THAT has held TRUE for over 50YEARS!! Thank the UNIVERSE 4Giving us - THE BAND!!

@@fordmustang3265 Wikipedia says "The Band was a Canadian-American rock group formed in Toronto, Ontario, in 1967"....and you know you can trust that site. ;)
Country rock, today it's Americana.
Only eleven years later Levon Helm would portray Loretta Lynn's father, so well too, in Coal Miner's Daughter (1980).
Only 11 years? He was a great actor and a treasure..
@@skigdividerx4991 Indeed, especially in _that_ movie. Considering that filming commenced sometime in 1979 then it was only just a decade later.
@@TralfazConstruction That was a great movie. Tommy Lee made it for me! Another great!
@@skigdividerx4991 Yes, must not forget Tommy Lee Jones. The entire cast sparkles. I remember the pre-release publicity tour for Coal Miner's Daughter forty-one years ago. They rightly made a big deal out of Sissy Spacek and Beverley D'Angelo doing their own vocals in the film.
Oh ya! Forgot about that
This is My very favorite song ever and I am 10 years old and I am from Arkansas😃
Levon was a good actor also. A very talented guy and the Band was a major influence during the early rock and roll years and beyond of rock and roll adding the southern influence to it. Robbie Robertson created and contributed a vast number of hits. Each member was vital to those years and vital to southern rock. They are truly missed.
Robbie ⭐️
Real MUSiC and musicians is hard to find theses days.... This BAND was IT
I think they are the best group of all time. Not just an subjective opinion
Born and raised in Lake Charles, Louisiana and this was very cool to have my little home town in a national song. The race track they sing about is called Delta Downs and it’s still there today. It’s actually about 20 minutes away west in Vinton, Louisiana.
This track and the 'weight' price-

Always loved the reference. I’m right in between in Sulphur. Huge Band fan!!!
I’m also from Lake Charles, grew up there and everyone called me Bessy lol, loved this song
They’re so young!
RIP Robbie Robertson the rock world is in mourning for the loss of this great songwriter/guitarist. I was fortunate to meet him two times. 🥲
Got to see them perform in Boston on Fourth of July 1993. Great group, the beginning of roots rock
Saw them in Ottawa on Canada Day that same year.

Make sure to watch "The Last Waltz" if you ever get the chance, THE Band at their best !
You Are soooooo RIGHT !!!!!!! in my opinion it's the best live performance in the world.
I love the The Last Waltz and it's how i first discovered The Band but i can't agree. Richard Manuel was a pivotal presence on those classic recordings and due to his severe substance problems during The Band's final days, he is all but absent from the film. The Last Waltz is great but it sadly offers an incomplete picture of what The Band really were about.
Forget the movie. The actual 4 hr concert is on UA-cam. Well worth the time investment.
They were all so young here. Getting old sucks.
These guys really cleaned up for this big moment
One of the best bands from Canada
The groove on this song is incredible - you can’t stop moving when you hear it!
This song was good❤😂
I'm with you! Damn great band. My favorite! I'm 73 and still play all their songs!
Playing time and phrasing the lyric over that is why it's tricky. Levon was a true natural. All were special in their own unique way. Love The Band.
Damn I wish I could have experienced life when this music was new
