- Freddy Martin and His Orchestra perform their theme song Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto in B-Flat in the 1942 film The Mayor of 44th Street. The number was first recorded by Martin the previous year.
My great grandfather was the upright bassist, George Green
This is my favorite song of all time, I love everything about this song. My great aunt (who is 96) had a stereo, and a huge collection of music (Mostly vinyl). She ended up moving into a nursing home, and she gave me her stereo and her collection of vinyls. After I put the stereo back together and got the vinyl sorted. I started listening to the music. I then came across this one piece of vinyl called “Golden Performances that will live forever” it had two records in it, one of them was labeled with a note that said “No good” written in my great aunts hand writing. I put the record on the turntable to see if it didn’t work or if it was bad music. The second song on that record was Freddy Martins famous adaptation of the “Theme from Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1” which is the song in the video. When I first listened to this song, I kept replaying 1:50 until the end. I fell in love with this song, I’m so glad I found this video. The pianist reminds me of my great grandmother who was amazing at playing the piano. I never got to meet her, but I wish I will be as good as her one day.
my father Seb was a long time violinsit with Martin during the Coconut Grove years and I went on the road with them in the '50s to Miami where they perfromed for many months, I went to elementary school in Boca Raton then....of course Tonight We Love was always running through my head.
Good to hear freddy Martin again.he such a good band.
So very beautiful!
I often wonder was Tchaikovsky would have thought of this.
Jack Fina on the piano.
Hi! 'Special thanks for that very interesting bit of info. It gave me a chance to read up on Mr. Fina. But wow, what a player!
