How do you build up 20 LIVES in a game that resets your lives back to 3 when you reload the file? You can only try a specific individual mini-game once and they get harder to earn lives in the later in the game they are, and you can't just replay the early levels to rack up lives when it's so easy to get hit and lose your rings in them or die. The most I can ever get in terms of lives is 11, and that was one time. You must be really good at the game, then. You were probably not being literal there, though...
There are also ways to farm for lives by switching and re-running select zones and acts, it's just really tedious and annoying for most of the methods. Back when my SP still worked I would life farm JUST for running Chaos Angel Zone.
You could also just play the minigames in each world. In Ocean Base, the button press minigame gives about 5 lives if you can do it fast enough. Same with the others.

I feel like this could be the theme for a modern Hyper Sonic. Even just the smallest movement could cause a massive city to collapse. The snap of a finger could create wind gusts up to hundreds of meters per second.

Then the platforms fall off-screen and the Eggman platform from Act 3 rises into view for a while and the screen scrolls to the right until the stage loops back to more falling platforms. I don't know if that's good enough though (I know it wouldn't be competitively legal, but legal stages are so boring)
